“To all involved with VOL.UP.2...never ever, in my entire life have I enjoyed a magazine as much as I did this one. Amazing, incredible, awesome are just the beginning of describing how I found your mag. It had the power to evoke emotions in me I have not felt for a long long time. I was moved, almost to tears looking at some pages. I am a big, curvy, rotund, plump, beautiful woman, & though it has taken me a while, I have begun to realise I am beautiful just as I am, simply because I am me. I have been on a journey, step by step, learning to love me exactly as I am. Reading your mag has catapulted me to my destination. I now know I am perfect as I am & there is no longer the need to be anything other than the real, true me that I am today. I wouldn’t change one thing about me. Every page delighted me. Every word was meant for me. Keep up the great work. Fabulous!” - K

“I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for making me believe that even though I am not a size four that I can be beautiful, sexy, and amazing. I stumbled across some of your pictures and then your magazine yesterday and WOW!!!! I have always been told “you have such a pretty face but only if you could lose about 80 pounds, you would be able to model”. Thank you for proving all those people wrong. You have touched my heart far more than you will ever know.” - C

“I love your magazine! I just viewed it online and I’ve never seen anything like it! Beautiful, It’s a real work of art! I just wanted you to know it feels wonderful to see beautiful women in magazine that I feel I can identify with! Thank you so much!” - K

Love from our readers...

Femininely yours,Velvet

I’m loving the response we received for our premiere issue of VOLUP2 and very much looking forward to getting the Femininity issue out for your enjoyment. We had a blast shooting some truly diverse, unique and all around amazing models in stunning designs. This issue centers around the theme of Femininity.I believe my personal sense of Femininity was born from watching my Mom, (she is the one to the right of the photo, with the killer hat) who was an impeccably dressed fashionista. I grew up delving through her jewelry boxes, trying on her old gloves, teetering in her massive heels and relishing the family photo albums where she and my Father appeared in all their glory back in the well-suited 4O’s. She had an innate sense of style, and was the type of woman who wouldn’t leave home without her signature perfume and having ‘painted her face’. Yet while her appearance was a revelry of feminine charms, her work ethic and independent streak may have been considered a more ‘masculine’ trait back in the day. But then you can’t possibly raise 5 children without having partaken in some backbreaking work. So my own sense of Femininity tends to draw upon flow, sense and sensibility, fragile, delicate movements juxtaposed with a strong backbone and a very definite sense of self.I am pleased that several photographers approached us with their own contributions on the theme as well as a plethora of amazing artists. I sincerely hope you enjoy this the second edition of VOLUP2!

Created by supermodel Velvet d’amour, the first supersize-plus model to infiltrate the elite world of Parisian couture, encourages readers to revel in their every “imperfection” and celebrate their bodies in their glorious entirety. born out of

Ms. d’amour’s work to expand society’s limited notion of beauty by building awareness about women of every size and shape, the magazine is a visual celebration of full-

figured beauty, combined with a self-affirming message of inspiration.Future issues will feature themes such as Femininity and Zest. Contributors of photographic work and essays are invited to submit work for consideration.

ArTisT FeATure: Deirdre West

ArTisT FeATure: Julie ross

if i had to give in one single image a definition of femininity,i would straight away portray a very glamorous golden age of Hollywood actress in a figure hugging dress, sensual curves and revolver eyes. some might then argue that in reality women don’t look like that. They wear jeans and lip-gloss and straighten their hair. They love boyfriend cut clothes and are not afraid to swear. But then again, this is femininity we are talking about right? Femininity is a glamour goddess, a femme fatale and a marquise, enjoying, exploring and pushing the boundaries of her womanhood to further limits. she screams curves and rouge and dances like a muse in vapors of chanel 5. celebrate Femininity by showing a strong, bold, beautiful and entertaining character that honors and respects the feminine persona. This is what i want to talk about.

who perfects and adulates the art of being an icon in a rhinestone dress better than drag queens? Their quest for perfection in female interpretation goes beyond reality; they serve to the audience a surreal vision, even more feminine than actual women. An atmosphere loaded with a strange sensation of bizarre and captivating beauty is a reflection of the complexity both inside and outside of the female being. Ah, women !

Dear Velvet...

Dear Velvet,i am battling with selfloathing. sometimes i feel ok with my body and then other times i just hate it and feel like i don’t know how to escape this vicious cycle, any suggestions?

Thanks, Maude Ps i love your new magazine!

Dear Maude,Thanks for your question, in fact we received other letters with a similar sentiment so its certainly something you are not alone to struggle with.i think acknowleging where our sense of Beauty stems from can help. One can’t escape the omnipotence of media saturation in our lives, and thus we can determine that for the most part, our concept of Beauty is formulated by this barrage of images that venerate youthful, white, tall, thin, poreless, etc. Then we add to that the use of some Photoshop trickery and we multiply it a few million times and afterawhile we are left feeling like we dont live up to this current beauty standard. so take a step back and recognise that loving one’s body in a world which promotes an unattainable beauty ideal isn’t always a piece of cake.Try to break away from what the media is selling to us as ‘Beautiful’ and take some time to explore what it is that you personally find beautiful. its easier said then done when you start to think just how much the media saturation effects ones notion of Beauty.it can help to explore past eras which were less polluted with a universal concept of singular beauty, and to see bodies back before plastic surgery was so prevalent, etc. id encourage watching old movies, heading to the museum, vintage magazines etc wade through to see what resonates and start to make some peace with your body through the realization that every era has its common standard of Beauty, so there will always be people who may feel left out when they dont fit within that criteria. And thus its up to that individual to make the choice between revolting against a system that is so exceedingly limiting or embracing one’s own persoanl sense of Beauty and style.looking back on your own old family photos and taking the time to research your family tree can also help in a weird way as it ties you to a sense of identity and belonging, it allows you to appreciate how your own looks have evolved through the centurys really. it lets you take a sense of pride in who you are and where you stem from. And if you have children or think you may in the future, it helps you to develop in them a sense of belonging and individuality.in my opinion, there is not one set standard of Beauty. realisticly if we buy into the notion that is sold to us, of this highly unattainable standard of Beauty currently being marketed to us everyday and in everyway, we see that by pushing people to feel badly about their looks, all the while worshipping the external physical Beauty , it pushes people to pay for potions, and lotions and surgerys etc and thus drives capitolism. Thus the media has a very vested interest in making the standard of Beauty so elusive. yet we as individuals don’t have to buy into this concept. when you feel down you can take comfort in the fact that you have endless possibilities available to you once you take the step away from what is pushed upon you and you start to explore what is most meaningful to you as an individual, be that what it may.i don’t think this answer is complete but i think its a start and i hope it may help in some small way.

Wishing the very best, Velvet

Dear Velvet...

A featured project by

These pretty crowns are great for costumes (Halloween princess, anyone?), fairy house decorations, and the tiny ones could be cute tree ornaments. They are deceptively easy to make, and could be a fun project to do with little ones.

You will need:

1. Take your lace and make a crown shape.

The laces i used have one flat side. That really helps the structure.

The width of the lace and the pattern will help you determine the size of your crown.

1

2

2. Trim lace to size with a 1/2 inch or more overlap, matching pattern.

292 F E M I N I N I T Y • f é m i n i t é

3. Paint with gold acrylic paint. Be sure to cover all surfaces.Paint both sides of the lace.let dry.

you may want to do more coats of gold paint. i mixed an iridescent gold and a flakier gold for a deeper look.

4. Place on wax paper.

5. coat with ModPodge until well saturated. i recommend you seal with, at least, 3 more coats of Modpodge. Move it around while its really wet, to keep the holes in the lace from becoming windows (filled in).

6. enhance the color with gold leafing powder dabbed onto wet Modpodge with dry brush. you can skip this step, but i really think it makes all the difference.

7. Dry completely flat. A hair dryer can speed the process.

Brush dry crown with a dry brush to remove excess leafing powder.

Peel off of the wax paper.

8. After all of ModPodge dries, use craft glue to attach the ends of the lace together to form the crown. Pinch ends with fingers until set, wait overnight, until dry. if this crown will see heavy use, some stitches on a sewing machine might also be a good idea.

9. Place crown on head and have fun storming the castle.
