Ready To Learn Using Visual

Learning

We now would like to discuss a very popular source of

Visual learning that we all are familiar with.

You ask What is it? It is the TV and the Public Media.

Almost every household in America has better access to

a TV than they might have to the internet or a computer

Entertains and Engages

Public media has been around for many

years.

Need to use high quality programming

This programming must help children stay

engaged.

Sesame Street and the Electric Company

are long running proven shows.

They contain interactive content.

Lets look at the results

Many educators and parents think that TV,

computer games and the internet have a

negative effect

This is not true when educational content

is combined with interactive sight and

sounds

The TV shows have engaging characters

that make a point of reading and learning

Research has shown that these type of TV

shows have motivate children to learn

It also shows that children most often

request new books to read and even go

to the library

Children who watch Sesame Street I their

pre school ages spend more time

pleasure reading in high School

They also obtain higher grades in subject

like English, Math and Science when in

Public Television and Media has

4 Decades since Sesame Street

and the Electric Company hit

Public broadcasting remains committed to their original mission

PBS for example strives to provide media content of the highest quality to help American children deepen their learning ability

Some of this includes current events, history, science and more

Public television has had a great history of

educating our children

Not all kids have access to good schools.

However about 99% of them have access

to public television.

Almost every television out there

provides access to media like PBS

Show like Sesame Street and one of my

childhood favorites Mr. Rodgers

Neighborhood, public TV has reinvented

children's TV

These shows have been proven that television is not just something we watch to pass time

PBS has been able to deliver instructional and education resources that have been Scientifically proven in their effectiveness for kids who need it the most and do not have access to a good public education

This type of education has recently been incorporating web sites, I phones, computer games to the public for free

In 1992 the federal government recognized the power of public television and step up it funding to help public broadcasting

Under the new program Ready to Learn the Department of education and with support from the US congress, the DEC funded RTL and PBS to help the nations 368 Public Television Stations in an effort to create new television show to educate our children

The first ten years allowed PBS stations and independent producers to build upon the success of existing shows and pave the way to produce new shows such as Arthur, Clifford the big red dog and Dragon tales.

The real winner in all of this the creation of media products and supplemental outreach services has proved to be a real game changer in children's media because it enables researchers to form partnerships with education researchers

Supporting a new Generation of

programming and research

In 2005 the US DED revised the mission

of the ready to learn initiative by directing

it to focus solely on early reading

instruction

As a result PBS redoubled their efforts to

incorporate the latest based research into

existing children's programs

Key Findings

Public television and computers are part of the literacy solution

Public television has positive effects on some key early literacy skills

This includes word recognition, phonological awareness and vocabulary development

When parents watch these shows with their children has a positive effect on learning

Kids make remarkable gains when taught reading through a combination of media

Research has found that using combined sources of media (Media Synergy) that the outcomes have been even more powerful that once thought.

This was proven in a little as 10 to 14 weeks in a literacy group of o children who did not have access to a good education

Conclusion

Every facet of the ready to learn initiative has been subject to intensive research

PBS television programs and Websites have been studied closely by some of the nations leading experts in education and literacy programs

The results have been impressive

Public television has met the ambitious standards that congress set with flying colors with only moderate funding

PBS since it’s inception has been able to deliver both and effective and affordable means of boosting the literacy development and other learning skills to all children, however, we see the largest gains in the poverty level children

The best part of all of this is that the resources belong to the American people and this will always belong to them

Everything has been developed and can be access through the public television station in local areas across the United States

No matter where the children live or how tight their income maybe they know that they can use the excellent public television system to help them learn

All of these are appealing to children and is a great way to interact and learn

Now almost 50 years later most people can not remember a time in their lives that public television was not available to use a tool for learning

Looking to the Future

Over the next five years the Public television network along with congress is looking to build upon the foundation in place and add items such as

Aligning all content with academic standards

Develop new Pre-K and early elementary curriculum frameworks for math

Create new children's math content

Pioneer and create new styles of gaming

for education

Design new tools for educators and

families that teach and track the children's

progress

Conduct extensive research or

evaluation of the design and learning

impacts of media content as well as the

overall effort to pave the way for even

more effective programs
