Steps to success:• I know what an adverb is

• I can identify an adverb in a sentence

• I can recognise what an adverb is describing

• I can use adverbs in a sentence

• An adverb describes a verb, telling the

reader how, where, when or why the action is happening.

• Let’s look at these more closely.

These kind of adverbs describe how something happens.

They often end in ‘-ly’

Example in a sentence:

She ran the race.

(no adverbs)

She quickly ran the race.

(HOW – quickly)

She ran the race quickly.

These types of adverbs describe where something happens.

Example in a sentence:

• Use a ruler

• Space them out carefully
