Build Amman SmartCity
Marriott Hotel- Amman, August 12th, 2015
Project Team
• Dr. Mwaffaq OtoomYarmouk University, Jordan
• Dr. Samir RawashdehUniversity of Michigan-Dearborn, USA
• Dr. Abdel-Karim Al-TamimiYarmouk University, Jordan
Brief Description
• Design, deploy, and analyze a cutting-edge small-scale SmartCity network to monitor air quality
• Multi-tier scalable wireless sensor network with emphasis on mobility and sustainability
• Solar-powered sensor nodes with water-proof enclosures• Extremely low-power network with long range communication
compatible with Jordan telecommunications regulations• Interchangeable sensors design to support other SmartCity
applications, including: SmartBuildings, Radiation Control, Noise…• Support for Over-The-Air-Programming (OTAP) to facilitate
application deployments on-the-fly• Infrastructure to multitude of future SmartCity research and
businesses
Justifications
• A significant percentage of world’s population lives in cities
• 70% of world’s population will live in cities by 2050
• In Jordan, 50% of its population currently lives in Amman
• SmartCity services to reach $400 billion yearly by 2020
• Demonstrates Jordan’s role as a key player in the
technological advancement in the region and the world
Justifications
• SmartCity technologies is needed to:
• Improve the wellbeing of city residents
• Sustain surrounding environment
• Reduce resources wastage
• Improve citizens engagements with government
Objectives
Design, deploy and analyze a long-lasting pilot smart wireless sensor network to be deployed with minimal administrative efforts on Yarmouk University campus that paves the way to future deployments in Amman and other Jordanian cities
Scope of work/DurationEstimated Budget
Duration: 24 Months
Estimated Budget : 128,920 Jordanian Dinars
Design• Sensor nodes to withstand harsh environment
• Solar-powered, waterproof enclosure, low-power and long-range communication
• Three-tier wireless sensor network • (Nodes, Gateways and a Data Processing Server)
• Adaptive power-saving system • Allows network to operate during night-time and overcast weather conditions
Deploy• Deploy a small scale network on Yarmouk University campus• Develop a deployment guidelines to assure future successful deployments
Analyze• Analyze collected data from sensors to propose better overall design

Methodology of Implementation
Initial Solar-powered Sensor Node Design(Controller + WiFi + ZigBee + Temp Sensor)
Expected outputs
• Design of a robust wireless sensor node to
withstand harsh operating conditions
• Design and implementation of a scalable
network, energy-efficient power system and
communication protocols
• Deployment of a fully-functional smart
wireless sensor network on YU campus
Expected outputs
• Detailed recommendations and guidelines to assure future
successful larger-scales deployments by providing deep
insights into technical and logistical challenges
• Accessible user interface to the collected measurement data
• A mathematical model of the collected data (representing
air quality) as a possible data modeling application of the
deployed infrastructure
• Summary of research findings to be published in accredited
international conference(s) or/and Journal(s)
Impact
• Increase the experience of the Jordanian scholars in the design
and deployment of smart cities technologies
• Pave the way towards fostering thousands of clean tech jobs,
thus driving the economic growth and supporting environmental
sustainability
• Provide a proof of concept smart city design and deployment for
real and future deployments in both public and private sectors
• Allow better collaborations between local Jordanian researchers
and Jordanian researchers abroad on emerging research topics
Sustainability
• Provide researchers access to the gathered data
measurements through a simple intuitive user-interface
• Conduct seminar sessions to transfer knowledge of this
project experiences to Jordanian researchers
• Provide an infrastructure for future application deployments
supported by:
– Network design with minimal administrative efforts
– Solar-powered and weather-resistant node design
– Over The Air Programming (OTAP) capability
