Utility - Gas

Trenchless Australasia - June 2005 23

Atteris breaks new ground in pipeline engineering

Recent successful projects, including the shore crossing for the 42 inch North West Shelfsecond trunkline offshore Western Australia and the 20 inch Otway gas export pipeline atPort Campbell in Victoria have strengthened the position of Atteris as a specialist in thefield of pipeline engineering and construction management.

Atteris commenced operations in1999 and according to Owner andManaging Director Eric Jas, the

company literally formed overnight when itsfirst client requested assistance with a drilledshore crossing for a gas pipeline in Taiwan. The job had been experiencing problems for several months prior and after arriving onsite two days after the initial phone call, Ericfound that the 36 inch pipeline had beenstuck halfway up the 1000 m long horizontalborehole for over a week. The crossingneeded redesigning and from there it wasinstalled successfully.

Several other projects followed for energycompanies such as Woodside, BP,ChevronTexaco, OMV and ROC Oil, as wellas for engineering companies including

Technip Oceania, Intec, Genesis Oil & Gasand Kellogg Brown & Root. The jobs completed for these clients were predomi-nantly oil and gas pipeline shore approachesand shoreline crossings in Australia andSoutheast Asia.

Atteris operates from a new office inPerth, employing a handful of specialists inthe field of pipeline engineering and con-struction, site surveys, dredging, rockdumping, horizontal directional drilling andmicrotunnelling. The company and itsemployees are focused on assisting thepipeline industry in these often misunder-stood areas.

Atteris excels in innovation, as proven onthe North West Shelf project, where therewas a no-cover rock berm design and the

pipeline was stabilised by deep-water dredg-ing. The Otway project also broke newground, involving a cased shore crossing.

Eric says “Although we carry in our portfolio significant expertise in the field oftrenchless installation of pipelines, it is notour business to promote this technology toour clients per se. We are probably the onlyengineering company in the Southeast Asianregion with the in-house expertise to objec-tively provide advice on the mostcost-effective construction method for a par-ticular crossing, be it a river, shoreline orother obstacle.”

As such, Atteris can provide services inand outside of Australia for pipeline shoreapproaches and landfalls, water intake lines, effluent outfalls, and crossings in onshorepipeline and cable routes. The company canwork from the concept stage of a project onsite selection and the collection of site data, through to design engineering, tender prepa-ration, and construction management.
