SCI HUNGARY - WORKCAMPS 2013 3
Description: The camp's main purpose is
to help the Taoist Community
in maintaining their
withdrawal place, while
getting to know eastern
philosophies and practices in
an authentic location. It is a
very unique place where
practitioners of eastern
philosophies and martial arts
can withdraw from the cities rush and focus on physical and spiritual development. It is
run by the Hungarian Taoist Community and they organize martial arts (tai chi, kung
fu)trainings and other programs there. This camp is a great opportunity for volunteers
to engage in something different and to experience alternative ways of living.
Type of Work: Since there are only two community members living there constantly there are many
things to do around the farm. The work is going to be mostly gardening, basically
helping to tidy up the farm, tasks such as reaping, planting and pruning. Other works
are: making birdnests, building fence and a new place for fire from stone and concrete,
collecting hay, weeding, planting saplings at the bank of the creek, jam making and jars
preparating. Additionally cleaning the territory of the lake of the farm. The work will not
be too heavy, but it can be tiring, so please be aware of this during your selection.
Study part: The camp provides taoist martial arts exercises for 1,5h X 5 times(tai ji/shen dao/chi
kung)for the volunteers. Besides the camp aims to introduce eastern philosophies and
practices to the volunteers. There is also a possibility to make excursions around,
discovering the natural surroundings of the farm, including an optional visit to a
Buddhist shrine and a Catholic pilgrimage place nearby to make the religious experience
more diverse. The volunteers are informed about the activity of the organisation and
the short history of the region during the camp.
Accommodation: In buildings, shared rooms.

Description: Tiszadob is a small, isolated village in the bank of Tisza river, with nice surroundings and
noticable cultural heritage. Currently in the Child Protection Centre, where the camp
takes place there are around 90 youngsters living together from various age groups,
mainly teenagers of gypsy origin. For more then a decade there is an SCI camp
organized in the children's home every summer, which is traditionally preceded by great
enthusiasm and high expectations. For the inhabitants the camp is a unique opportunity
to get in contact with people from abroad.
Type of Work: The physical part of the work will be
mainly gardening and building a path on
the court of the children's home,
together with the inhabitants. The
volunteers will be spending the most of
the time with these children, motivation
and interest in working with
disadvantaged youngsters is expected
from them. The volunteers will be also
going to Tiszalk, a village nearby, where they will be working in the garden of the
home of mentally disabled kids. Due to the long tradition of the camp, the international
volunteers are always warmly welcome, the leisure activities are well organized and
diverse.

Description: Abaj/Abov, a landscape extending on both sides of the Hungarian-Slovakian border, has two North-South rail links: the 150-year old MiskolcKoice and the 100-year old SzerencsHidasnmetiKoice lines. In general, Hungary has a rather dense network of
public transport services but there are huge differences in frequencies and quality level, in addition to problems with sustainability and a lack of integration. In rural areas part of the problem is the lack of funds and organisation in maintenance, therefore many stations look as if they had no owner or as if they had just been damaged in war. This is also due to a lack of a political vision for rural
transport and the suppression of local organisational levels within state railways MV.
Abaj region's railways are exemplary for lines poorly attended to and with a
considerable potential.
Type of Work: We will take care of unattended stops cut grass, clear weeds and shrubs, collect waste, carry out some basic repair and refurbishing work.
Study part: After work and fellowship, in the evening there will be workshop-type occupations, some of them with professional guests, on sustainable transport and integrated transport systems, partly according to the interests and wishes of participants. Possibility to participate in a survey on railway stops and better transport services.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be staying in Hidasnmeti in a house next to the banks of River Hernd.
They will prepare breakfast and sack lunch themselves and typically the main meal will be provided by the local community we work with.
