About ManchesterWith an industrial past and a vibrant present, Manchester is one of the most dynamic and lively cities in Europe. Home to world-class sport, top shopping and hundreds of restaurants, Manchester has cultural events and attractions to suit every lifestyle. The city itself has a diverse and multicultural population and is home to one of the largest student populations in the UK.
HISTORY AND ARCHITECTUREManchester’s position as the world’s first
industrial city is evident in its famous
Victorian buildings and monuments,
such as the Town Hall in Albert Square.
In recent years the city centre has
been reshaped. New public spaces have
been created, and imaginative buildings
and developments have appeared,
transforming the city’s skyline.
EATING AND DRINKINGWith over 300 restaurants there is an
eclectic range of high-quality, modern
British and international cuisine available.
Manchester’s Chinatown is the second
largest in Britain and has a number of Asian
restaurants and supermarkets. There are also
many restaurants and shops in Rusholme’s
‘Curry Mile’ offering South Asian and Middle
Eastern dining options and produce.
CULTURAL MANCHESTERManchester offers a rich choice of cultural
activities. There are more than 50 museums
and galleries in Greater Manchester, most
of which provide free admission. Two of the
best - the Whitworth Art Gallery recently
named museum of the year 2015, and the
Manchester Museum – close to the campus.
Manchester has something to offer
everyone. Whether it’s international
cinemas, theatres, opera, ballet, comedy
or music, it’s all here.
SPORTManchester is home to two of the biggest
names in sport: Manchester United and
Manchester City football clubs. Manchester
United’s ground, Old Trafford, is the largest
club ground in Britain, while 2014 Premier
League winners Manchester City are based
on the other side of the city at their Etihad
Stadium, originally built for the 2002
Commonwealth Games.
The Games left a legacy of world-class
sporting facilities, including the Manchester
Aquatics Centre and the Manchester
Velodrome. National and international cricket
can be enjoyed at Lancashire’s Old Trafford
Ground, and rugby union and rugby league
teams play at nearby Sale, Salford, Wigan
and Warrington.
SHOPPINGManchester is the shopping capital of the
North and has a range of top department
stores, popular high street chains and
designer boutiques. The Northern Quarter
offers a unique experience with its mix
of fashionable bars, cafés and vintage
boutiques, where you will be able to
find products from all over the world.
The Trafford Centre, a large out-of-town
shopping centre with more than 250 stores,
confirms Manchester’s reputation as a
shopper’s paradise.
GETTING AROUND THE CITYAlthough Manchester is one of the largest
cities in the UK, it is easy to navigate. It has
a compact city centre that can be accessed
either on foot or by using the city’s excellent
public transport system. This includes
relatively cheap buses, a modern Metrolink
tram system and an extensive train network
with connections throughout the UK.
…AND BEYOND THE CITYManchester is a great base from which to
explore the rest of the UK. There are four
national parks within an hour’s drive or a
short train journey, including the naturally
stunning Peak District, Lake District, and
Snowdonia in North Wales. London is just
two hours by train and the historic cities of
York and Chester, and the unique Blackpool
seaside resort are also within easy reach.
For those who wish to explore further
afield, Manchester International Airport has
daily flights serving 200 destinations and
a frequent service to London Heathrow, as
well as to most major European cities.

and the Lake District, north of Manchester.

My life at INTO
INTERNATIONAL NETWORK My friends are from all over the world like China, Vietnam, Spain, Russia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Turkey and we’re all doing different subjects which makes our conversations really interesting. I have so many new contacts in my phone, there is always someone to talk to or go out with.
“I can’t imagine going straight to university without this programme. It has given me such a good background.”
22 INTO Manchester in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University 2016–2017
CREATIVE INSPIRATION I love my lessons in the art studio. Whatever the theme of the project given to us by the teacher, you can choose a passion you like to help create it. You become so dedicated to creativity. I stayed until 9pm to finish the first assignment, but it felt like I had really achieved something.
PASSION FOR FASHION People can wear what they want in Manchester and nobody will say a word. I feel my style is more free and more colourful here. The Arndale Centre is the best place for shopping as there are so many cool shops with all sorts of types of clothing. I like going there with my friends at the weekend.
BEYOND MANCHESTER I’ve visited Scotland with some of my classmates and we went to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Loch Ness. I’ve also been to the seaside in Brighton which was fun. The memory card on my camera is full of lots of pictures of the places I’ve been to.

The methods of learning and assessment
that are introduced in this module will
also support the work you do for Research
Methods and EAP.
Research MethodsSeven hours of your total contact time per
week will be dedicated to Research Methods.
These classes will help you to plan a
research project, conduct research and write
up a dissertation. You will develop strategies
for undertaking research projects within
your chosen field and you will have the
opportunity to explore different approaches
to research methods and analysis.
The dissertation will be an independent
piece of research, though you will have
language support as well as a tutor who will
offer clear guidance on planning, content
and structure. Your focus will be on a topic
of your choice which relates to your future
postgraduate course.
* The Management Studies module is a compulsory module which is not credit bearing.
