Welcome from the Chancellor
On behalf of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, I welcome you to our Spring 2012 Commencement Ceremony. Commencement is one of our most time-honored and cherished traditions, one we have practiced for 117 years. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point held its initial commencement ceremony on June 26, 1895.
"Families, townspeople, faculty and students gathered at 10 a.m. in the Assembly Hall for this historic occasion. Dr. Benjamin S. Terry of the University of Chicago presented the address and spoke on the topic ,'What is An Education?' Seven members of the class received diplomas in elementary education."1
Today we will honor more than 1,290 students, their families Bernie L. Patterson and supporters as they celebrate this major achievement from a university that includes four academic colleges and more than 100 program choices within 63 majors, 81 minors and 16 graduate programs. We congratulate our students and all who have made it possible, for their achievements, learning and rigorous work.
Completing a university degree is a major accomplishment, one not achieved without significant sacrifices by the students themselves and also by their families, associates and friends. It is my honor to present these students to you so that you may share in the great joy of their success on this special day.
I thank our faculty and staff members today as well. Through their dedication and mentorship, they have broadened our students' intellectual horizons, contributed to many happy memories, and most importantly, they have transformed lives.
It is my pleasure to confer these degrees and to honor our Spring 2012 graduates through this most magnificent of UW-Stevens Point traditions.
Sincerely,
Bernie L. Patterson Chancellor

The Speaker
James Kurth, a 1978 graduate of UW-Stevens Point, is chief of the National Wildlife Refuge System, the world's premier system of public lands and waters for the conservation of America's fish, wildlife and plants.
Kurth, who grew up in Columbus, Ohio, manages more than 150 million acres and 556 units of the 109-year-old refuge system, which is located in all 50 states and U.S. territories. He has worked for the refuge system since 1979 and served as the deputy chief since 1999.
"I have had the chance in my career to work in the field from the Everglades to the Arctic, and it has been a great adventure," said Kurth. "But the best thing about my job is seeing the incredible conservation work my fish and wildlife colleagues do and discovering many of them are UW-Stevens Point alumni."
James Kurth
Kurth has worked in posts at the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge in Mississippi, Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge in Florida, Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana, Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge in Rhode Island. Before becoming the deputy chief, Kurth managed the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in northern Alaska, the largest refuge in the U.S. at 20 million acres.
He and his wife, Tricia, reside in Centreville, Va., and have three grown children.

The Albertson Medallion was established in 1967 as a memorial to James H. Albertson, eighth president of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. These students have distinguished themselves as true leaders within the academic and co-curricular activities of our university and community. In awarding the medallions, the students, faculty and staff members of OW-Stevens Point express their great pride in the accomplishments of the graduates during their college experience. The Albertson Medallion further suggests an anticipation of the significant achievement which we believe lies ahead for these recipients.

Academic Regalia History
The origins of the academic dress date back to the 12th and 13th centuries when universities were beginning to form. It is still open to question as to whether academic dress finds it sources chiefly in ecclesiastical or civilian dress. It is often suggested that gowns and hoods were the simplest, most effective method of staying warm in the unheated, stone buildings that housed medieval scholars.
In the days of King Henry VIII of England, Oxford and Cambridge first began prescribing a definite academic dress and made it a matter of university control to the extent of its minor details. The assignment of colors to signify certain faculties was to be a much later development and one which was to be standardized only in the United States in the late 19th century. An Intercollegiate Commission comprised of representatives of leading institutions met at Columbia University in 1895 and adopted a code of academic dress, which besides regulating the cut and style and materials of the gowns, prescribed the colors which were to represent the different fields of learning.
In 1959, a Committee on Academic Costumes and Ceremonies, appointed by the American Council on Education, again reviewed the costume code and made several changes. In 1986, the committee updated the code and added a sentence clarifying the use of the color dark blue for the Doctor of Philosophy degree.

Academic Regalia The Gown
Pattern. Gowns recommended for use in the colleges and universities of the United States have the following characteristics. The gown for the baccalaureate degree has pointed sleeves and is designed to be worn closed. The gown for the master's degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist. The sleeve base hangs down in the traditional manner. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut, and the front part has an arc cut away. The gown for the doctor's degree has bell-shaped sleeves.
Material. As a means of adaptation to climate, the material of the gowns may vary from very light to very heavy provided the material, color and pattern follow the prescribed rules.
Color. Black is most common although some universities have adopted a different color.
Trimmings. Gowns for the baccalaureate or master's degrees are untrimmed. For the doctoral degree, the gown is faced down the front with black velvet, and three bars of velvet are used across the sleeves. These facings and crossbars may be of velvet of the color distinctive of the disciplines to which the degree pertains, thus agreeing in color with the binding or edging of the hood appropriate to the particular doctoral degree in every instance.
The Hood
Linings. The hoods are to be lined with the official color or colors of the institution which granted the highest degree held by the wearer; more than one color is shown by division of the field color in a variety of ways such as by chevron or chevrons.
Trimmings. The binding or edging of the hood is to be velvet or velveteen, two inches, three inches and five inches wide for the baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees, respectively; the color should be indicative of the subject to which the degree pertains.
Academic Regalia Chancellor's Medallion and the Ceremonial Mace
The Chancellor's Medallion and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Ceremonial Mace were both handcrafted by Henry M. Runke, former chairman of the UW-Stevens Point Art Department. The medallion was cast in a 14k gold pendant in 1968 and contains a purple amethyst to represent the school colors. The four-sectioned areas beginning near the center symbolize the four colleges of the university and terminate as prongs for the gem. The mace, carried by the grand marshal in academic processions, was completed in 1976 and has a square base on which important dates from the school's history are recorded. The most prominent feature is the head of the mace which is a miniature of the cupola on Old Main, the university's symbol. The inside of the mace also contains a purple amethyst.
International Flogs
As a depiction of the university's commitment to fostering global citizenship, the international flags represent the home countries of our international students since 1980, and also the countries in which our students have studied through international programs. The current total of 114 nations includes the following:

The association helps alumni stay in touch with former classmates and friends through a variety of services including the Pointer Alumnus and various other communications,
alumni reunions, homecoming, alumni travel, an online alumni directory and other special
events.
Support for the Alumni Association is provided in part by the UWSP Foundation, the UW-Stevens Point administration, proceeds from an alumni endowment and by gifts from
alumni and friends.
