Sophomore selected for Gatton academy
UHA sophomore Deeya Patel has been notified that she
has been accepted into the Carol Martin Gatton Academy
of Mathematics and Science out of Western Kentucky Uni-
versity for the fall term. She will complete her junior and
senior high school years living on WKU’s campus taking
courses offered by the college. At the end of high school,
Deeya will have earned at least 60 college credits. Stu-
dents are chosen based on their SAT/ACT scores, high
school grades, awards, extracurricular activities, answers
to essays and letters of recommendation. Deeya is the
daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Deepak Patel. Her brother Vir
graduated from the program in 2015.
Congratulations to Beth Peebles, a seventh grade student at
UHA, who qualified for State Recognition in the Duke Univer-
sity's Talent Identification Program (TIP) and for the Center
for Summer Studies. Beth took the ACT in February, and her
composite score of 21 earned her this honor.
UHA’s Jr. BETA officers attended a Student Leader-
ship Summit in French Lick, Indiana on April 5. They
completed the summit in a fun, energetic and inter-
active environment and earned the distinction of
being an Outstanding Leadership School. Pictured L

Youth Leadership Program
UHA Supports Sanctuary House
Congratulations to our UHA students and facul-
ty for raising the most money for the Rotary
Auction this year. They also were awarded a
trophy for Most Per Capita. Thank you, Student
Council, for taking on this project to support
Rotary’s mission to help students go to college!
UHA’s Student Council is sponsored by Myriam
Aponte and Michelle Dill.

Money For Rotary
Five UHA students were selected for the 2016 –
2017 Hopkinsville—Christian County Youth Lead-
ership Program. The leadership program identi-
fies young people each year from local public
and private high school who demonstrate lead-
ership qualities and further develops their leader-
ship potential. It provides students with a frame
of reference for effecting community change
and developing within themselves a sense of
community involvement. Congratulations to the
following students from University Heights Acad-
emy who have been selected to participate: Em-
erson Barlow, Victoria Sisk, Drew McGowan, Te-
laisha Hollowell, and Cheydan Crump.
On Wednesday, April 27, UHA faculty and students participated in “Jean Day” and wore their jeans in support of
those impacted by sexual assault. “Jean Day” was sponsored by Sanctuary House. Sanctuary House is a non-profit
agency committed to the provision of preventative and restorative services to victims of sexual assault and domes-
tic violence. They deliver caring, comprehensive support to victims of personal violence in the nine-county area of
the Pennyrile Area Development District. UHA was honored to support this community project.

University of Kentucky’s chorus Day
Congratulations to 8th graders Katie Beth Stevens and Lily Hen-
dricks for being chosen as the UHA essay winners for the Mayor's
Scholars Program. Students had to submit a 250 word essay out-
lining youth-focused concerns the Mayor's Youth Council should
address at an upcoming Youth Summit. The chosen students are
invited to take a day-long trip to Murray State University.
Seven of UHA's male choir members attended the Univer-
sity of Kentucky All-Male Chorus Day where they learned
several pieces of choral music with Dr. Jeff Johnson and
then performed in a concert. Dr. Johnson is a Professor of
Choral Studies at the University. Jacorie Summers, one of
UHA's basses, was selected to perform a selection with the
U.K. acoUstiKats. The acoUstiKats have been on the Sing-
Off and are famous around the world for a cappella choral
singing. Approximately 200 young men from about 20
schools attended the workshop. Pictured Front L to R:

Seventeen sixth through ninth grade UHA students audi-
tioned, were selected, and attended the Murray State Uni-
versity Junior Quad State Choral Festival on March 1,
2016. The students had rehearsals after school, in Febru-
ary, to prepare the repertoire for this event. Dr. Bradley
Almquist, Professor of Choral Music at the University, led
and conducted the Festival. The students had six hours of
rehearsals Tuesday culminating in a performance for a
large audience. There were 214 students from seventeen
schools participating in the event. UHA is very proud of
our choral students. Pictured left to right: Evelyn Morales,

Junior selected for Governor’s scholar program
Juniors Kui Kabithe and Damon Key have been notified that they have been accepted into Murray State University’s COM-MONWEALTH HONORS ACADEMY. The Commonwealth Honors Academy (CHA) is an exciting, challenging three-week academic, social and personal growth program for outstand-ing high school students who have completed their junior year. Upon completion of the Academy, students will:
receive six hours of university credit
have the opportunity to take three hours of tuition-free university courses at Murray State University during the subsequent fall and spring semesters
be awarded a four-year, $2,000-per-year housing scholar-ship to attend Murray State University
Kui is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. David Kabithe, and Damon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sloan Key.
Middle and upper school students
presented the musical Legally Blonde
Jr. at the historic Alhambra Theater.
Mrs. Bressler and Mrs. Kissner were
directors of the play, and the show
was a great success!
Garrett Gee has recently been notified that he has been selected into the
2016 Kentucky Governor’s Scholar Program. Garrett is a junior at UHA and
the son of Christy Gee and Shane Gee. To participate in the Program, Garrett
had to be nominated by his school to compete at the state level. Selection for
the program is highly competitive, with an application process similar to that
of prestigious colleges and universities. In addition to an academic profile that
includes difficulty of course load, GPA, and at least one standardized test
score, the application requires an outline of all extracurricular activities, a histo-
ry of volunteer service, and a list of job positions held. Teacher recommenda-
tions include both quantitative evaluation and qualitative descriptions of the
student’s performance and potential. The final component of the application
is an original essay. Garrett will participate in the Program this summer.

Blazers win All “A” Region Congratulations to the UHA baseball team on winning their region and their sub-sectional game in
the All “A” Classic Tournament. The team will advance to the State Tournament. Way to go Blazers!
Adam Stone, senior catcher for the Blazers, signed his letter of intent to play for Transylvania Universi-ty in a ceremony held in UHA’s gym surrounded by his teammates. Adam led the Blazers last year in hits (26), RBIs (29), doubles (10), walks (19) and batting average (.361), among other categories, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Best of luck to Adam next year as he plays for the Pioneers!
After a unit studying Earth-sun-moon relationships and the history of NASA’s
Apollo and space shuttle missions, UHA’s 6th grade got to travel on their own
“Mission to the Moon.” The student astronauts applied and trained for specific
jobs including navigation, life support, communications, medical, and robotics.
Each student spent time working at mission control in their specific roles as well
as working in a spacecraft simulator. They worked together to solve problems
that arose, repair a damaged probe, test moon rocks, and decide where they
should land to build a lunar base for human habitation. The Challenger Learn-
ing Center in Paducah is a once in a lifetime experience for many and just might
spark an interest in engineering and space studies. Pictured left to right: John
