Without admitting it to myself, I always seemed to live in the shadows of my older brother and sister.

whenever I met new people, they’dsay, “Oh, you’re Elizabeth and Gerald’s younger sister!” I liked the attention, but it had a bad side, too. side  方面

I made average grades, had a few friends instead of hundreds, and was too shy even to join a club.

Secretly, I always suspected that people wondered how in the world we could be from the same family.

However, something magical happened when I turned twelve.That June, my parents began taking the family to a localcommunity center. We could swim, play games, and visit with other families.

I’m not sure what my brother and sister did during those hot summer days at the center, because for the first time in my lifeI was too busy doing my own thing.

Every day, I watched three or four kids practice their dives. I memorized all the names and studied all their moves.

感官動詞後可接原形動詞、 現在分詞、或過去分詞。• I watched the man swim across the river.

I imagined I was the one leaping high in the air and then cutting into the water without a splash; instead, I did plain dives from the pool’s edge.

形容詞 high 有兩種副詞型態 high 和 highly :1. high 修飾具體的動詞• climb high fly high‧2. highly 修飾抽象的形容詞• a highly amusing film• a highly educated man

Then one day it happened. The diving coach called to me just as I surfaced from a dive.

call to = shout (為引起注意對人)喊叫 just as I surfaced from a dive. → when I rose to the surface of the water from a dive.

“Why don’t you do that off the board ?”he asked.

off = away from  從…離開• It is reported that someone jumped off the bus this morning.

“I could teach you some other techniques.” If Brian hadn’t been so friendly, I might have tried to escape.

此句為與過去事實相反的假設語氣 .If Brian hadn’t been so friendly, I might have tried to escape.→ In fact, Brian was very friendly, so I didn’t try to escape.

But instead, I found myself on the board, knees like mashed potatoes,the pool noises just a roar in my head.

原句 =→ However, instead of trying to escape, I found that I was standing on the diving board, that my knees were as soft as mashed potatoes, and that the noises around the pool were just a roar in my head.

There was no place to go but in — head first.

but 當「除了」解時,常與 no, no one, none, nothing 等否定字連用 .• I have no choice but to ask him for help.• There is no one here but me.• None but the brave deserve the fair.• This car has been nothing but trouble.原句 =→ I had no place to go but to jump into the pool with my head first.
