Past progressive…

• Focuses on the duration of time• We often mention a specific past time• Talks about an event that was happening or in

progress in the past

Example: at 12:30, what were you doing?

Subject + was/were + (verb) –ing

In 1912, the Titanic was sailing on the Atlantic Ocean.People were traveling on the Titanic.

Past time clause:

• while goes with past progressive in a time clause.

– While I was eating lunch, my phone rang.– Jenny saw me when I was shopping at Hy-Vee.

• OR! – My phone rang while I was eating lunch.– While I was shopping at Hy-Vee, Jenny saw me.

What happened?

Simple past:

• Shows a past event was finished.• An action stopped or interrupted another

action.– He was running. He fell.
