PROPERTIES OF MATTER (PART 2) (UNIT TWO, LESSON 2.2)

BY MARGIELENE D. JUDAN

LESSON OUTLINETwo Components of MatterPhysical Properties Chemical Properties

MATTER IS ANYTHING THAT OCCUPIES SPACE AND HAS MASS.

TWO COMPONENTS OF MATTERCompositionProperties

PHYSICAL PROPERTY

Without any change in compositionCan be classified as intensive and extensive.(ex. Change in phase, cutting paper, melting)

EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL PROPERTYDensity – amount of mass in a specified placeVolume – amount of space an object occupiesBoiling Point – temp. in which liquid changes to gas (evaporation)Melting Point – temp. in which solid changes to liquid (melting)

EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL PROPERTYMalleability – capability of metal to be hammered into thin sheets (ex. Gold, silver, tin, jewelries)Conductivity – ability to conduct heat and electricityMagnetic property – ability to attract materials made of iron and steelDuctility – ability to be drawn into wires (ex. Copper)Hardness – resistance to scratch (ex. Hardest is diamond)

CHEMICAL PROPERTY

Change in composition or chemical formula(ex. Rusting, burning, change in taste)

PHYSICAL VS CHEMICAL CHANGE

EXAMPLES

TAKE NOTE: ALL CHEMICAL REACTIONS ARE CHEMICAL

CHANGES!

10. Sunlight is a matter.

A. True B. False C. Cannot be determined

ANSWERS!

1. Rusting is a chemical change.

2. Melting is a physical change.

3. Freezing is a physical change.

4. Burning is a chemical change.

5. Cutting paper is a physical change.

6. Rotting is a chemical change.

7. Forming air bubbles (ex. yeast) is a chemical change.

8. Which of the following are examples of matter? You may have more than 1 answer/s. Answer: ALL OF THE ABOVE! A. A dog B. Carbon Dioxide C. Ice Cubes D. A moving car

9. Aluminum phosphate has a density of 2.566 g/cm3.

A. Physical property

10. Sunlight is a matter.

B. False. Sunlight has no mass and doesn’t take up any space (volume). Sunlight is a form of energy.
