The Cape TownHigh Court ruledon Friday that the eight Ruyter-wacht families who were evictedtwo weeks ago from their Com-municare houses in Ruyter-wacht can return to their homes.
The attorney representing thepeople of Ruyterwacht and secre-tary of the Ruyterwacht Tenants’Committee, John Adams, workedinto the small hours of the morning
to see that justice was served. The threats of evictions have
been coming for months, but onWednesday 19 September, they be-gan in earnest.
Eight families were “put out onthe street” with no plan put in placefor where they should sleep thatnight.
Their friends and family offeredalternative places to sleep and onthe Thursday when it rained, theCity of Cape Town managed to or-ganise a place where the families’
belongings could be stored.Ward councillor Michael Britz
and Councillor Cedric Thomas acti-vated disaster management andthis unit, along with the city and theprovince’s Department of Social De-velopment offered help where theycould.
“It shows we’re a city that cares,”explains Thomas.
Be this as it may, the eviction it-self was something those who it in-volved would like to forget.
One person who was evicted and
wishes to stay anonymous feels itwas done in an undignified mannerand that it was one of the most trau-matic moments in her life.
She also alleged that she receivedno prior notice of eviction.
Communicare, the Section 21company that owns a large portionof Ruyterwacht and rents it out tolow-income households, has been atloggerheads with some residentsfor a very long time.
Joel Mkunqwana, Social Housingand Community Development di-
rector, explains that tenants areevicted when they breach the leaseagreement.
“The tenants in Ruyterwachtwere evicted due to rental arrears. When tenants default in rental pay-ments, it results in a loss in revenuewhich could affect our ability torender efficient services such asmaintenance, gardening, cleaning, security services, customer rela-tions and supportive social develop-ment programmes,” he says.

. From page 1.The residentwho sawaneed of represen-
tation for the community, John Adams, in-sists however that those who are threat-enedwith eviction are up to datewith theirrent and that the costs which Communi-care claim are outstanding are actually le-gal costs.“Residents are, in effect, paying to take
themselves to court,” says Adams. The legal battle between the community
and Communicare has been going formonths and as yet there seems to be nolight at the end of the tunnel for either par-ty.Adams, who himself is apparently sup-
posed to be evicted from his home in Ru-yterwacht, continues: “Every year at thesame time they try to evict residents. This
time Communicare used 2011 eviction let-ters.” Thiswas according to him, one of thereasons why the court decided to give theevicted residents 60 more days of relativesecurity in their homes. But Mkunqwana insists that the recent
evictions were related to late rental fees.“Communicare has formal rental agree-
mentswith their tenantswhich outline therespective roles and responsibilities ofboth landlord and tenant. Tenants shouldcontact their area office as soon as they ex-perience difficulty in paying their rent sothat we can review their situations and of-fer help. To assist tenants who fall on hardtimes we support different relief pro-grammes. There are right-sizing and offerindigent grants or housing benefit allow-ances to genuine cases of hardship or af-
fordability, which allows us to reduce rent-al charges per month. This is in effect foran initial period of threemonths whilst weassist the affected tenant to meet afforda-bility challenges.”Poverty alleviation programmes and so-
cial development services are being of-fered by Communicare, so Mkunqwanastates clearly: “We cannot tolerate instanc-es where our clients choose to unreasona-bly ignore above prescriptions which aremeant to alleviate affordability problemsto their benefit.“Proper collection of rental is one of the
key requirements of an accredited socialhousing institution as legislated withinthe South African housing context if onewill be able to sustain its continuous provi-sion of affordable rental opportunities.”

Capt Pierre Jordaan is a policeman withhis eye on the ball way beyond his crime-fighting duties.
Working as the communications officer atElsies River SAPS, Jordaan from Bracken-fell is one of the top snooker players in thecountry, and is still pocketing those ballswith the best of them.Currently he is ranked number one in
South Africa and with a little help will beheading off to take part in theWorld Champi-onships in Bulgaria later this year. The jovial policeman is well known in the
community for his involvement with crime-fighting projects and working with youth inempowerment projects, but confesses thatsnooker is his other passion in life.He laughs when he remembers that he ac-
tually started playing when he was seven.“We lived in Joubert Park in Johannes-
burg and I learnt to play at after-care on aquarter-sized table,” he says.“The teacher’s name was Miss Ray, that’s
all I remember but I loved playing eversince.”Since then he has achieved some good ti-
tles under his belt that included winning theGoodwood Championships in 1988, the WPJunior Title, but he confesses that there arestill some titles that allude him evenwith histop ranking.“Sometimes I take things too easy in the
big games, but that is justmy temperament,”he confesses.“If you look at my records youwill also see
that I have been the WP runner-up seventimes, four times in the SA Classic, as wellas in the SA open.“It just happens but I still enjoy playing
and I’m always positive that the big break isgoing to be there for me one day.”His achievements in recent years speak for
themselves with him winning the BolandOpen earlier this year, fourth in the All-Afri-ca tournament where he compiled the high-est break and he has represented the policeat five World Police and Fire Games over-seas.This year will mark the fourth time that
he is chosen for the World Champs and heis very proud to represent his country, butthere are financial aspects that may keephim from attending.“Only a portion of our travelling expenses
are paid for. The rest we have to fund our-selves or find sponsors,” he says.“Unfortunately I do not have the extra
money that is needed ... ”For more information Jordaan can be con-
tacted on 082 302 8602.

GARY VAN DYK
An important partnership inmobile com-municationwill be benefiting young peo-ple in the community.
Keep the Dream 206 is a cross racial, cul-tural and religious organisation that hasbeen operating in the Delft and surroundingareas since 2003, offering the youth at riskof the areas an alternative to drugs, teenagesex and pregnancies, abuse, alcoholism, gangsterism and most of the negative influ-ences that penetrate our communityonadai-ly basis.
They are now set for greater achievementswith their partnership with Uronimo, a mo-bile media platform that enables virtuallyeveryuserworldwide to enjoya superiormo-bile experience and receive any form of digit-al content on their mobile device, regardlessof the type of phone, network or carrier.
Margo Lawrence of Keep the Dream saidthat what initially attracted Uronimo’s at-tention to the plight of the organisation wasthe possibility of the institution possibly be-ing forced to close its doors, unless much-needed funding was made available.
“It is for this reason that Uronimo ZA hasagreed to a partnership with us,” she said.
“There is undoubtedly a great need for so-cial development in South Africa and with
technology of this nature we are able to pro-vide this institution and others with assist-ance through mobile advertisements to as-sist with the raising of funds.”
She pointed out that this initiative will en-able them to continue their work in the com-munity where instead of the negatives, theywarn the youth about the dangers of HIV andAids, anger, crime, rape, teenage pregnan-cies, etc, and offer them dancing, singing, art, poetry, sport, and life skills.
“Through our programmes we motivatethem to complete and further their educa-tion. We say that without education, there isno liberation.
“We also run a programme called TakingCharge which is a concept that has been de-signed to be used as an early interventionpreventative model relating to the negativesthat penetrate our youth at risk on a dailybasis.
“Through this programme the youth aretaught preventative measures and how tocope with peer pressure and temptations.”
Dance also plays a big part in their activi-ties. “Currently dance is the foremost pro-gramme and our dancers have performed atmany of the big stages in Cape Town,” shecontinued.
For more information Lawrence can becontacted on 072 703 9948, or email cpf-sas@gmail.com.

Twosocialwork students areworkingonmaking some special learners at a schoolin Belhar, extra special.
Mxolisi Mangxola and Adrian Seherriefrom the University of theWestern Cape arecurrently doing their practicals at the OasisSpecial School in Belhar.“This is a school for severely mentally
challenged learners,” said Mangxolo.“As part of our practicals, we are organis-
ing a fundraising and awareness project onWednesday 17 October to assist the school toaddress the dire educational needs of thelearners.“Many of the learners come from the sur-
rounding extremely impoverished commu-nity. Sincemany of the learners are often ex-cluded from mainstream society, the focus
of the project is to create an awareness aboutsocial inclusion.“We will also address the following fac-
tors; teenage pregnancies, and HIV/Aids,which may cause social exclusion.”Mangxolo added that they would be invit-
ing many of the key stakeholders that facili-tate awareness programmes on HIV/Aids,schools, nurses and social workers of thecommunity to participate in the project.“We would like as many people from the
surrounding communities to be a part of thisproject to showour learners that the commu-nity cares about them.“Part of our appeal is also that we would
appreciate any consumables as donationssuch as cool drinks, sugar, tea, biscuits, cof-fee, milk, sweets, paper plates and cups.”Further information about the event from
the school on 021 952 2100, or emailMangxolaat mangxola@gmail.com.
Pushing social inclusion
The Belhar Principals’ Forum are playing their part in supporting the Oasis Special Schoolby helping to raise funds for the school, and to make the community aware of the plight ofthe disabled in the community. They recently handed over a cheque for R10 280 to the schoolas part of their ongoing support. June Hamman and Robin Reid are seen here getting thecheque from chairman of the forum, Kevin Sonn, with some of the principals in the forum,(from left) Andy Josephus (Belvue Primary), Owen April (Accordion Primary), Jonathan Henkeman (Principal Oasis) and Ralph Talmarkes (Perserverance High). tion and area governor for the Tygerberg ar-ea and feels that there are still many morepeople out there who could benefit from be-coming a toastmaster.“It is lots of fun,” he says.“Apart from learning how to have the con-
fidence to stand up and speak in front of peo-ple, there’s also the social side of thingswhere you meet people from all walks of lifeand become lifelong friends.”Rochelle Manuel from Bellville South is
one of the newer members having joined inOctober last year but already rising throughthe ranks. She was elected secretary of the Siemens
Toastmasters Club (situated in Plattekloof,Parow) last year and retained the positionfor this year. This year she also received the award for
Most ImprovedToastmaster, and duringAu-gust won the Humorous Speech contest inthe club, and for the area against four otherclubs.“I am confident that her improved public
speaking skills, leadership and self-confi-dence will encourage and inspire others tojoin Toastmasters,” continued Holman.“Her personal and professional achieve-
ment will inspire others to step out of theircomfort zone and make a difference in thecommunity of Bellville South and surround-ing areas.“We want people from all areas to take up
the challenge and we will be there for themto help them set up their own clubs whenev-er and whever it is needed.”Siemens Toastmasters Club meets every

A student from Stellenbosch brought itback home with a workshop at MarianHigh recently.
Shannon Lambrechts, currently studyingfor his BSc inMicrobiology andBiotechnolo-gy, is originally fromClarke Estatewhere heattended Clarke Primary. He recently proved that he has not forgot-
ten his roots when he was part of a projectthat was hosted at Marian High by the 2012South Africa-Washington International Pro-gram (SAWIP) on Saturday 8 September. This project that involves students from
the universities of Stellenbosch, Cape Townand UWC is helping to inspire, prepare andsupport SouthAfrican youth to lead a sustai-nable democracywith a peaceful and prospe-rous future for all its citizens.Lambrechts explained that this year the
group held three formal meetings to discussand decide on a viable community serviceproject.“In each meeting, members presented
their project proposals to the group for consi-deration. As a group, we agreed that our pro-ject should be driven by two fundamentalprinciples, youth development and accoun-tability,” he said.“After several lengthy discussions, we de-
cided to merge the two main ideas, which fo-cused on three key aspects, skills develop-ment, refurbishing a high school library, and government accountability.“Marian High was chosen to have their li-
brary refurbished and considering wherethe school is located we implemented ourskills development and government accoun-tability projects there.”In theareaof skills development, thegroup
hosted a very successful series of workshopsthat concentrated on CV writing, businessplan development, writing skills and assis-tance with university applications. The workshop even attracted some adults
from the community. When it came to the library Lambrechts
said that their vision for the librarywas two-fold.“Firstly, it is to provide learners access to
educational material in the form oftextbooks, fiction and non-fiction books, andvisual materials.“Secondly, we wished to create more than
a mere physical space filled with books. Wehope to create a space that inspires learningand a reading culture among the learners.“We envision the school library as a vital
instrument in the education process, not asa separate entity isolated from the schoolprogramme,” he said. The main event of the day was a govern-
ment accountability session in which someof the ward councillors of the area wereasked to attend to enable the youth andmem-bers of the community to answer questionsabout accountability within their wards. The othermembers of the SAWIP teamwe-

Seniors’ groups inDelftwill bebenefitingfrom the formation of a forum to joinforces for better services.
Gadija Francis, a community developmentworker in the area, is the mentor for theprojectwho feels that there aremany organi-sations in the area looking after the welfareof seniors, but the formation of a forum willstrengthen services to them.“There are already a number of organisa-
tions and established groups in the area thatservice the seniors,” she said.“Unfortunately we found that some of
them are not operating as efficiently as theyshould be, but within the forum we will beable to share resources with them.“Seniors who are also not sure about
where there are services available to them
can alsoworkwithin the forum to help them.“Another benefit is that itwill be easier for
sponsors and donors who want to help themto contact us.”Francis also pointed out that most of these
groups always made sure that their mem-bers got something to eat and drink whenthey hosted their meeting and the forumwanted to ensure that this can be main-tained.“We welcome any donations of refresh-
ments because these seniors deserve specialtreatment all the time.“There are alsomanyof them that dohand-
work and crafting as activities so if the com-munity wants to assist with resources andmaterials such as wool, cloth, knitting nee-dles, etc. they can just contact us,” she said.Francis can be contacted on 083 695 7885 or
the secretary Cindy September on 072 6037432.

Blikkiesdorp is going to be part of the love thata local clothing store wants to spread.Bringing just a little of the love that makes
the world go round to the Cape Flats, theNaartjie Love Foundation is launching acountrywide initiative donatingused clothingbrought in by customers to the BlikkiesdorpCharity, and “rewarding” the donation ofeach item with a 5 % discount voucher. With this unique initiative, customers are
encouraged to bring in items of wearable sec-ond-hand children’s clothing and the people ofBlikkiesdorp will be the benefactors. Each item of clothing will “earn” a 5 % dis-
count voucher that can be used on the donor’snext Naartjie Kids purchase.Donors can bring in as many items as they
like, but they may only use up to 25 % of thevouchers on any one purchase.Working with the foundation on this worth-
while project is LeeWarren who is already in-volved with a number of projects.“Afterworkingwith the community of Blik-
kiesdorp for the past two years, we have devel-oped a deep understanding of the challengespeople face here on a daily basis, living withno basic resources or services,” she says.“To this end, the community and I have un-
dertaken a journey to establish “The Blik-kiesdorpHub”whichwill consist of convertedcontainers transformed into a Multi-PurposeCommunity Centre.“Once the hub is in place, non-profit organi-
sations will work with the community. In thepast, this kind of development work has beennon-existent as there have been no facilitiesfor holding workshops, skills training andcounselling services.“Most importantly, the hub will provide a
safe environment for the children living inhere, whose futures are looking very bleak in-deed shouldwe not intervene on their behalf.”

SAREL BURGER
’n Haarbreedte.
gende kampioen. – (Sarel Burger)
Die groot vraag is:Wie teen wie?
Gold: TheWestern Province u19 indoor soccer teamwon the goldmedalin the recent InterProvincial Tournament held in Centurion. The playershad tough competition from the likes of Gauteng North, Gauteng Scorpions and Southern Gauteng. The team scored 61 goals and only conceded23 in their nine games. They are (from left back) Carlo Arenz (captain),Luke van Niekerk, Brayden Bailey, (front) Zarrio Bailey, Timothy Barendsand Dylon Meyer.
After a highly successful river paddling sea-son in the Western Cape, an Edgemead canoe-ist is determined to make his mark in thisyear’s Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon.Ivan Kruger, a member of the Century City
Canoe Club, will take on South Africa’s bestpaddlers in the 82km race that starts in Cra-dock this coming Saturday. Some international stars will also make
their appearance in this exciting two-day riverrace in the heart of the Eastern Cape.Kruger, whohas just turned 20, is among the
top three u-23 paddlers in the country. He fol-lowed up his win in the arduous 240km BergRiver Marathon in July with a second placingin the Breede River Marathon in September(in a double canoewith JosieWilliamsof PaarlCanoe Club). He was placed in the top 10 overall in the
country in both these events.Ivan is no stranger to punching above his
weight having previously broken the u-18record at the Berg River Marathon at the ageof 15.HeobtainedhisProtea junior colours in 2010
and took part in theWorld Marathon Champi-onships in Spain where he was placed ninthin the world in his age category.Kruger, complete his first Fish River Mara-
thonat the age of 14 and thiswill behis seventhin a row.“It’s fun fromGrassridgeDamon awater re-
lease that guarantees lots of exciting rapids allthe way to Cradock 82 km down river. It is anepic challenge of one’s paddling ability withthe added pressure of it being the SA K1 RiverMarathon Champs this year,” he says of thisyear’s challenge. The weekend will see more than 1 500 pad-
dlers taking part with some 400 entries in thesingle kayaks (K1), 500 in the double kayaks(K2) and about 100 three man kayaks (K3).When asked who will be standing between
him and his goal of a top 10 overall placingKruger sounded a bit apprehensive.“With the who’s who of South African pad-
dling on the start line at this year’s race it’sgoing to tough! Just looking at the start list isenough to give any man the shakes. For start-ers there’s Len Jenkins, the defending K1
champ for as long as most people can remem-ber, who has never lost a K1 year on the Fish. Then there’sHankMcGregor, 2011WorldMar-athon champ and a multiple K2 winner of therace. I am pretty sure he is hungry to breakLen’s clean sweep of K1 victories. Not to men-tion some international darkhorses that couldeasily cause an upset,” he said.Krugerwas as cautious about predicting his
chances for a podium position in the u-23 agecategory.“This will undoubtedly be equally tough sinceI have no doubt that the top three u-23 paddlerswill be in the top 10 overall. All the top u-23contenders are very capable of a top three fin-ish – Protea paddlers like Grant van der Walt(current u-23 world marathon champion), hisyounger brother Brandon, Andrew Birkett(currentDusiK1andK2champion) andmyself(previous junior K2 winner in the Fish with
Brandon) just to mention a few names.”Krugerhashoweverput in a lot of hardwork
in preparing for the race.“With the Fish just around the corner, I am
now moving into my final preparation stage. My race boat is ready and set up and I’m feel-ing super strong. This will bemy seventh timecompeting in the Fish and I have achieved a12th place overall in a K2, so I am hoping toreturn with a top 10 overall as well as a topthree u-23 finish,” he said. When Ivan returns it will be straight into
the surfski season and he will be setting hissights on the CTWorld Cup race and the CapePoint Challenge in December.Despite this heavy schedule, the costs of
equipment, race fees, travelling expenses, coa-ching and sports nutrition, Kruger is determi-ned to reach his ultimate goal of becoming aworld champion.

The Milnerton Aquatic Club (MAC)will host its fifth annual 12-HourSailing Challenge this coming Sat-urday.Due to the limited number of sin-
gle handed class dinghies in thecountry, this year’s challenge willbe for all monohull class dinghies. To win a cash prize in each of the
classes, however, the class needs toconsist of at least five dinghies.Participants in a class of fewer
than five will sail in the Open class.By allowing all monohull din-
ghies to sail the 12-hour challenge,it gives all sailors, irrespective ofage or sailing skills, the opportunityto have fun, challenging each otheron Rietvlei, to see who sails the fast-est lap and who crosses the finishline first after 12 hours. All sailors are welcome to enter
the challenge. The challenge is also on, to see if
our local sailors can achieve bettersailing times than their UK counter-parts at the Southport Sailing Club.Only the teams that have entered
the challenge may camp over at theclub on the Friday evening, to beready for the Saturdaymorning ear-ly start.Braai fires will be lit on Friday
evening for a “bring ‘n braai”.There is no entry fee to the area
for spectators. Everyone is wel-come. Refreshments will be on saleand there will be games and a jump-ing castle to keep the children busyon shore. For more information contact

The Tiletoria West Coast Ex-press, known as the fastest andflattest race in the west is gear-ing up for another great race atthe Sunningdale Sports Club onSunday 21 October.
TygerBurger is the media spon-sor of the race. For the past eight years the race
has seen unprecedented growth.According to Rodney Beck, chair-
man of the Table View based Out-riders Cycle Club, the popularity ofthe event can be attributed to thefact that they cater for all levels ofcyclists, and that funds raised fromthe event are donated to variouscharities. The main beneficiarythis year isAfrikaTikkun, an inter-national NGO that provides educa-tion, health and social services inSouth African townships. The event has three distances,
85 km, 65 km, and 19 km. The 85 kmroute starts at 06:30 and traversesthe R27 and then turns right toMamre where the riders encountera little hill called the “never ender”as just when you think you are onthe top, it seems to continue forev-er.From that point on it’s fast and fu-
rious going past Atlantis wherespeeds of 50 to 60 km/hare thenormfor the racing group. From there,
the route sweeps off toMelkbos tak-ing in the majestic view of TableMountain where the route finisheson Big Bay Boulevard. The 85 kmroute has league status and thus at-tracts all Cape Town’s top ridersand those who wish to hone theirracing skills. The 65 km route leaves at 07:15
and also follows the R27. At theMelkbos turnoff it turns right to-wards the N7, then its onto the OldMamre road, intoAtlantis and backto the finish following the sameroute as the 85 km.The 19 kmwhichstarts at 08:30 caters for the noviceand parent/child rider. There is plenty on offer for family
members who are waiting for theirloved ones to complete the fun ride. The start/finish has a carnival
