ry Time 22 Aug 2004

GREETING

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

And also with you.

Penitential Rite

My brothers and sisters, to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries, let us call to mind our sins.

I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault,

in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and

in what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints,

and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

Amen.

Opening PrayerLet us pray Father, help us to seek the

values that will bring us lasting joy in this changing world. In our desire for what you promise make us one in mind and heart.

Amen

Liturgy of the WordFirst Reading (Isaiah 66:18-21)

Thus says the Lord: “For I know their works and their thoughts, and I am coming to gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come and shall see my

glory, and I will set a sign among them. From them I will send survivors to the nations, to Tarshish, Put, and Lud—which draw the bow—to Tubal and Javan, to the coastlands far away that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among

the nations. They shall bring all your kindred from all the nations as an offering to the Lord, on horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and on mules, and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the Lord, just as the Israelites bring a grain-offering in a clean

vessel to the house of the Lord. And I will also take some of them as priests and as Levites, says the Lord .

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial PsalmR. Go out to all the world and tell the good news . Praise the Lord all you nations!

Extol him all you peoples!.

R. Go out to all the world and tell the good news . For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness forever.

Second Reading(Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13)

And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as children— ‘My child, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, or lose heart when you are punished by him; for the

Lord disciplines those whom he loves, and chastises every child whom he accepts.’ Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children; for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline? Now, discipline always seems painful rather than pleasant at the time,

but later it yields the peaceful f ruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL The Lord be with you.And also with you.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.Glory to you Lord.

Jesus went through one town and village after another, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, ‘Lord, will only a few be saved?’ He said to them, ‘Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able. When once the owner of the house has got

up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, “Lord, open to us”, then in reply he will say to you, “I do not know where you come from.” Then you will begin to say, “We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.” But he will say, “I do not

know where you come from; go away from me, all you evildoers!” There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrown out. Then people will come from east and

west, from north and south, and will eat in the kingdom of God. Indeed, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.’

The gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily

Profession of Faith We believe in One God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father, Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven;

by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures;

He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the Right Hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the Faithful R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For Church leaders who guide us on the road to salvation, we pray to the Lord:

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For world leaders who respect the law of love written in each heart, we pray to the Lord: R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For people who encounter a ‘narrow door’ when seeking justice, fair employment or suitable healthcare, we pray to the Lord: R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For all of us gathered here today, called to face with an open heart every challenge of love presented to us, we pray to the Lord:

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

PREFACE

Father, all-powerful and ever- living God, we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord. Through his cross and resurrection he freed us from sin and death and called us to the

glory that has made us a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people set apart. Everywhere we proclaim your mighty works, for you have called us out of darkness into your own wonderful light. And so, with all the choirs of angles in heaven,we proclaim your glory and join in their unending hymn of praise:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Eucharistic Prayer II

Invocation of the Holy Spirit

Lord, you are holy indeed, the fountain of all holiness. Let your Spirit come upon these gifts to make them holy, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

The Lord’ Supper

Before he was given up to

death, a death he freely

accepted, he took bread and

gave you thanks. He broke the

bread, gave it to his disciples,

and said:

“Take this, all of you, and eat it:

this is my body which will be

given up for you.”

When supper was ended, he took the cup. Again he gave you thanks and praise, gave the cup to his disciples, and said:

“Take this, all of you, and drink from it, this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me.”

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

When we eat this bread,When we drink this cup,We proclaim your gloryUntil you come again.

In memory of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Father, this life-giving bread, this saving cup. We thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. May all of us who share in the body and blood of Christ be brought together in unity by the Holy Spirit.

For the Church

Lord, remember your Church

throughout the world; make us

grow in love, together with

bring them and all the departed

into the light of your presence.

In communion with the saints Have mercy on us all; make us worthy to share eternal life with Mary, the virgin Mother of God with the apostles, and with all the saints who have done your will throughout the ages. May we praise you in union with them, and give you glory through your Son, Jesus Christ.

In praise of God
