Biggest Problems with this type of infrastructure documentation:
Staff member changes positions or moves to a new company
Staff member retires … or worse

So what is GPS?So what is GPS?
Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)
A satellite navigation system with global coverage
United States – Global Positioning System (GPS)
Russia – GLONASS
China - expanding its regional Biedou Navigation System into the global Compass Navigation System (2020)
European Union's Galileo positioning system (2020)
Global Positioning System (GPS):The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a worldwide radio-navigation system formed from a constellation of 24+3 satellites and their ground stations. GPS uses these "man-made stars" as reference points to calculate positions accurate to a matter of meters. Each Satellite orbits the earth approximately twice a day.

GPS Overview
GLONASSGLObal'naya NAvigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema
Global Navigation Satellite System
Russia’s equivalent to the U.S. GPS Navigation System. Has 21+ Satellites, in 3 orbital plans. System provides an estimated accuracy real-time of 100m (deliberately degraded).
As of October 2011, full global coverage has been restored.
Six (6) Types of Errors Ephemeris errors - Satellite location error Satellite clock errors Atmospheric errors
-Ionosphere errors - can be significant in polar and equatorial regions
-Troposphere errors - variations in humidity, temperature and air pressure - less significant than ionosphere errors
Receiver errors -clock inaccuracies Multipath interference - deflection of signal by solid
objects like tree canopies and buildings - can be significant
Human error
GPS Overview
Line of sight is the ability to draw a straight line between two objects without any other objects getting in the way. GPS
transmission are line-of-sight transmissions.
GPS Overview
Obstructions such as trees, buildings, or natural formations may prevent clear line of sight.

2009 Holux GPS vs Trimble GeoXH Field Trial
Locate and GPS reading taken at same spatial location: Interval 100 US Survey Feet
2009 Holux GPS vs Trimble GeoXH Field Trial
Issue Noted: 51 Feet Difference between RED Holux GPS Point and YELLOW Trimble GPS Point
2009 Holux GPS vs Trimble GeoXH Field Trial
Issue Noted: Recreational Grade Holux Receiver recorded parallel pipelines as crisscrossing one another along pipeline right-of-way (RED Lines). Trimble measurements document lines as pipeline
found in field, parallel to one another with proper distance between pipelines (YELLOW Lines).
2009 vs 2012 Holux GPS vs Trimble GeoXH Field Trial
Line A Comparison – Multiple years. (2009 RED Lines & 2012 PINK Lines). Trimble (YELLOW Lines) documents correct spatial location of Line A.
2012 Holux GPS vs Trimble GeoXH Field Trial
Trimble (YELLOW Lines) documents correct spatial location of Line A, B and C. Holux Line A – RED, Line B – ORANGE, Line C – PINK. Maximum error noted 175Ft+.

Tri-Global UtiliMapper – One Call Centerline Database Update
Background: Communications company in U.S. required a solution to record accurate spatial locations of fiber optic communication utility to help reduce the number of locate request manually processed.
Current locate ticket mapping system places a 250ft (76.2m) buffer on underground facilities and generates work orders if locate ticket falls within buffer area. If fiber route is incorrect within system, this could result in outages if utility is damaged within excavation.
Company processes approximately 5.6 million requests manually each year.
Tri-Global proposed to the company the UtiliMapper solution paired with Trimble GeoXH and Radiodetection RD4000.
Field trial: 15/Aug/07

Tri-Global UtiliMapper – GIS/Mapping Database Update Multiline (Pipeline)
Background: Corrpro secured a contract to identify, locate and record spatial positions and depth of cover of client assets spanning over 1,050 KM (652 miles) of right-of-way which contained between 5-6 individual pipelines (3,260-3,912 miles of pipeline mapping). Project scope of work also required Corrpro field teams to note locations where deficiencies were found, i.e., broken/missing signage, exposed pipe, erosion, encroachments, etc.
Client requested Microsoft Excel spreadsheets as final deliverable
Local farmers association forcing pipeline operators to have depth of cover information readily available for its assets within cultivated fields.
