ABOUT US
Third Millennium Information (TMI) Ltd is the leading publisher
in the UK of high-quality illustrated histories and portraits of great
institutions, notably within the educational sector.
We specialize in publishing books that define the uniqueness
and excellence of institutions to their core alumni and supporter
communities, whom we additionally invite to participate in the
projects as contributors and early-bird buyers.
TMI was established in 1999 by Julian Platt as a fine art
publishing house working primarily with museums and art galleries
in the USA. In 2001, a one-off opportunity to give something
back to Julian’s alma mater – Clare College at the University of
Cambridge – gave birth to a publishing idea that has become
a global publishing business. The Clare Development Office
subsequently said that the project was the best that they had ever
undertaken in terms of involving their whole alumni membership.
Over the past 10 years TMI has published extensively with
universities and schools within the UK. Our peerless publications
with a series of Oxford and Cambridge colleges presented us with
the rare opportunity to devise and publish the highly acclaimed The
University of Cambridge: an 800th Anniversary Portrait – the flagship
event in Cambridge’s prestigious year of celebrations.
Praise for TMI’s work with the University of Cambridge:
‘An exciting and beautiful publication containing the voices of Cambridge,
past and present ... The challenge has been to produce an illustrated book
which reflects both the essential seriousness of the subject matter, and the
beauty of the place and the atmosphere of youthful excitement which linger
in the memory of so many alumni. This has been brilliantly achieved.’
Professor Alison Richard, Vice-Chancellor
Today TMI continues to publish beautiful books with schools,
universities and other institutions throughout the UK. We are also
excited to be expanding our unique publishing model to the USA
with UCLA: The First Century being published in October 2011,
followed by a book with Pepperdine University in early 2012.
WHAT mAKES OUR BOOKS SO SPEcIAL?
TMI publications capture and distil the unique character of our
client institutions in ways that resonate strongly with their alumni,
core supporters and champions. Our books celebrate the best of
the past, its achievements and its challenges, and create space for
memory and nostalgia to play their part in the story. However,
they also carry the story forward into the present day in ways
that are helpful to institutions in building a case and context for
support. The effect is to give alumni a clear view of the institution
that they were being asked to support, and a renewed pride in their
sense of belonging.
The aspect of involving alumni in the creation of our books
gives these projects a participative quality which carries through into
extremely strong book sales both before and following publication.
Illustrated book publishing at its best‘Quality is never an accident. There must be the will to produce a superior thing.’– Ruskin

HOW WE WORK WITH EDUcATIONAL cLIENTS
Our clients tell us that they want the highest-quality book at the
lowest possible price: they want to be confident that their book will
sell to alumni but they don’t want the hassle of having to do the
selling, and they want the whole process of creating the book to take
place without key staff having to put their normal working lives on
hold. All of these things are possible!
TMI will take charge of all aspects of the project working
in close liaison with the client to ensure the finished product
is a perfectly formed presentation of the institution concerned.
For each publication we appoint and manage a project editor
or author, develop a synopsis, manage photography and picture
research, design the book and organize all necessary proof-reading,
indexing, printing and delivery. Additionally, TMI has developed
a sophisticated ‘early-bird offer’ marketing expertise. We will
market the book directly to the client’s alumni database in advance
of publication and manage all aspects of pre-publication sales right
through to the packaging and shipping of books on publication.
Alumni will benefit from a special pre-publication price if
they take up the early-bird offer. Additionally, if they order before
an advertised deadline they will have their name printed in a
special appendix within the book which proves hugely popular.
Finally, they will be invited to contribute memories, anecdotes and
memorabilia to be selected for inclusion within the book, subject
to the editor’s discretion and the client’s approval.
One of the key incentives for an institution to proceed with
TMI is the substantially reduced financial commitment required.
Our aim is to finance the project as much as possible through direct
sales to the client’s alumni rather than through large payments
from the institution itself. The success of our early-bird promotion
will depend upon the size of the alumni database and strength of
alumni affinity to the institution. Response rates have been very
strong, with a 10 to 15 per cent take-up rate from databases being
typical. In principle, if alumni take-up is sufficiently strong then
there may be no cost at all to the institution in publishing the book.
With best wishes

Faith and Service:A Portrait of The Order of MaltaEDITED BY VAL HORSLER
Tracing its origins to the eleventh century, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta can
look back over a history of fortitude in the face of challenge, of courage in battle, of
compassion for those in need.
Today, the Order is one of the world’s most effective humanitarian organizations, with 12,500
members, 80,000 permanent volunteers, and over 20,000 medical personnel, including doctors,
nurses, auxiliaries and paramedics. The goal is to assist the elderly, the handicapped, refugees,
children, the homeless, those with terminal illness and leprosy in fi ve continents of the world,
without distraction of race or religion. Through its worldwide relief corps the Order is also
engaged to aid victims of natural disasters, epidemics and armed confl icts.
Faith and Service is the fi rst volume to offer a global panorama of the Order’s efforts and
activities. Through compelling photo-reportage from the front line, the book brings the day-to-
day commitment of the Order’s volunteers vividly to life as well as portraying the humanity of
those they serve.
‘The Order of Malta today continues its 900-year-old tradition of caring for the poor and the sick. So that
our work can be better understood, we have launched a new book project which I believe will greatly enhance
understanding of the work of the Order within the wider world community. I will personally be supporting
this very worthwhile project.’

New College, OxfordEDITED BY CHRISTOPHER TYERMAN
With the help of extensive illustrations, many never previously reproduced from the
college’s collections, this book reveals both well-recognized and unexpected aspects of a
living, changing society of academics, staff and students.
Contributions by a distinguished group of current fellows and old members cover all areas of
college life: its history, architecture, gardens, estates, archives, books and treasures; college servants,
religion, teaching, music and sport; prominent former members in church, state and literature;
and the impact of war. With compelling archive images and contemporary colour photography,
this is less a formal portrait than a rounded enjoyment of New College past and present.
‘The volume looks superb …That the whole project has been brought to fruition so expediently is down
in large measure to TMI’s patience and understanding of our foibles as well as requirements. Sensitive
publishers are gold dust. Many thanks.’

Trinity: A PortraitEDITED BY EDWARD STOURTON AND PROFESSOR JOHN LONSDALE
Plenty has been written about the genesis of Trinity College, Cambridge, its many
distinguished alumni and even its fi nances. However, in the seven decades since the
Second World War, generations of Trinity students have witnessed profound changes at
an unprecedented pace.
Trinity: A Portrait, then, is not a history so much as a thematic exploration of both the individual’s
experience of the College and the College’s development in the university, national and
global arenas. Today, Trinity is a vital contributor to the modern, research-based University of
Cambridge, at the same time remaining a scholarly community, a family in which the social and
academic are indivisible.
‘Ed Stourton and his colleagues have assembled a wonderful book – a combination of text and pictures
guaranteed to inform and amuse anyone with a Trinity connection.’

Treasures of St AndrewsUniversity Library
EDITED BY NORMAN H. REID WITH MARC BOULAY, RACHEL HART, ELIZABETH HENDERSON, MOIRA MACKENZIE AND MAIA SHERIDAN
The collections which have gathered within St Andrews University Library are outstanding.
Books from the dawn of European printing to contemporary fi ne imprints, including the
fruits of over a century’s status as a Copyright Deposit Library; manuscripts representing the
breadth of human activity from the dawn of Christendom to modern times; an astonishing
photographic archive, based on the position of St Andrews as one of the crucibles of early
photographic development; and the university’s own institutional archive.
This volume presents 50 selected items from across the collections, each accompanied by a short
explanatory essay by an expert in the fi eld. It also features an introductory essay outlining the
history of St Andrews University Library from its beginnings in a few mediaeval cathedral book
presses to a modern hub of learning within an institution of international academic reputation.
‘Scholars, staff and students at the University of St Andrews are extraordinarily privileged to have such
precious resources to draw on as we make our own contributions to our academic community here in Scotland
and beyond. I hope that this book will, in its turn, prove a source of inspiration and delight to its readers.’

The Conscience of Europe:50 Years of the European Courtof Human Rights
This book, published in English and French editions, and designed to mark the Court’s
fi ftieth anniversary in 2009 and the Convention’s sixtieth in 2010, does not purport to be
a full and complete history of the institution. Nor is it a treatise on the Court’s procedure
and case-law, on which many publications already exist.
Rather, being for the general reader wishing to increase his or her knowledge of the Court as
an institution, it steers a course between an academic commentary and a purely introductory
guide. It groups a variety of individual contributions, on topics generally selected by the authors
themselves, round a skeleton retracing the main relevant events over the last half-century.
This publication has been made possible by a generous contribution from the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
