False Teaching in Crete

Titus 1:10-16

Titus 1:10-1610 For there are also many

rebellious people, full of empty talk and deception, especially those

from Judaism.

Titus 1:10-1611 It is necessary to silence them; they overthrow whole households by teaching what they shouldn’t in

order to get money dishonestly.

Titus 1:10-1612 One of their very own

prophets said,

“Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”

Titus 1:10-1613 This testimony is true. So,

rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith

Titus 1:10-1614 and may not pay attention to

Jewish myths and the commands of men who reject the truth.

Titus 1:10-1615 To the pure, everything is pure, but to those who are defiled and

unbelieving nothing is pure; in fact, both their mind and conscience

are defiled

Titus 1:10-1616 They profess to know God, but

they deny Him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient,

and disqualified for any good work.

The Problem:

The Problem:The church in Crete is

under attack from false teachers

1. God gives us a condemning profile of these false teachers

False Teachers:Rebellious

Titus 1:10-1610 For there are also many

rebellious people, full of empty talk and deception, especially

those from Judaism.

False Teachers:Full of Empty Talk

Titus 1:10-1610 For there are also many

rebellious people, full of empty talk and deception, especially

those from Judaism.

False Teachers:Deceitful

Titus 1:10-1610 For there are also many

rebellious people, full of empty talkand deception, especially those

from Judaism.

False Teachers:People from Inside

the Church

Titus 1:10-1610 For there are also many

rebellious people, full of empty talk and deception, especially

those from Judaism.

Acts 20:28-3128 Be on guard for yourselves and for

all the flock that the Holy Spirit has appointed you to as overseers, to

shepherd the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.

Acts 20:28-3129 I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among

you, not sparing the flock.

Acts 20:28-3130 And men will rise up from your

own number with deviant doctrines to lure the disciples into

following them.

Acts 20:28-3131 Therefore be on the alert,

remembering that night and day for three years I did not stop warning each one of you with

tears.

False Teachers:Motivated by Greed

Titus 1:1111 It is necessary to silence them; they overthrow whole households by teaching what they shouldn’t in

order to get money dishonestly.

Jude 1:1212 These are the ones who are like

dangerous reefs at your love feasts. They feast with you, nurturing only

themselves without fear.

Jude 1:12They are waterless clouds carried

along by winds; trees in late autumn — fruitless, twice dead,

pulled out by the roots.

1 Timothy 6:55 And constant disagreement

among people whose minds are depraved and deprived of the truth,

who imagine that godliness is a way to material gain.

1 Peter 5:22 Shepherd God’s flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion but freely, according to God’s will;

not for the money but eagerly.

False Teachers:All Around Evil

Titus 1:10-1612 One of their very own

prophets said,

“Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”

Titus 1:10-1613 This testimony is true. So,

rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith

2. God exposes the erroneous message of

the false teachers

Titus 1:1010 For there are also many

rebellious people, full of empty talk and deception, especially those

from Judaism.

Potential False Teachings:

False Teaching:1. Knowledge is the key

to redemption

False Teaching:2. Religion is the

pathway for redemption

Titus 1:1414 And may not pay attention to Jewish myths and the commands

of men who reject the truth.

Titus 2:11-1311 For the grace of God has

appeared with salvation for all people,

Titus 2:11-1312 instructing us to deny

godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and

godly way in the present age,

Titus 2:11-1313 while we wait for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory

of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Titus 2:1414 He gave Himself for us to

redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a

people for His own possession, eager to do good works.

Titus 1:1616 They profess to know God, but

they deny Him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient,

and disqualified for any good work.

Mark 7:1-231 The Pharisees and some of the

scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Him.

Mark 7:1-232 They observed that some of His disciples were eating their bread with unclean—that is, unwashed—

hands.

Mark 7:1-233 (For the Pharisees, in fact all the Jews, will not eat unless they wash

their hands ritually, keeping the tradition of the elders.

Mark 7:1-234 When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat

unless they have washed.

Mark 7:1-23And there are many other customs they have received and keep, like the washing of cups, jugs, copper

utensils, and dining couches.)

Mark 7:1-235 Then the Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, “Why don’t

Your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders,

Mark 7:1-23instead of eating bread with

ritually unclean hands?”

Mark 7:1-236 He answered them, “Isaiah

prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written:

These people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.

Mark 7:1-237 They worship Me in vain, teaching as doctrines the

commands of men.

Mark 7:1-238 Disregarding the command of

God, you keep the tradition of men.”

Mark 7:1-239 He also said to them, “You completely invalidate God’s

command in order to maintain your tradition!”

Mark 7:1-2314 Summoning the crowd again, He told them, “Listen to Me, all of

you, and understand:

Mark 7:1-2315 Nothing that goes into a person

from outside can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.

Mark 7:1-2316 If anyone has ears to hear, he

should listen!”

Mark 7:1-2317 When He went into the house

away from the crowd, the disciples asked Him about the parable.

Mark 7:1-2318 And He said to them, “Are you also as lacking in understanding?

Don’t you realize that nothing going into a man from the outside

can defile him?

Mark 7:1-2319 For it doesn’t go into his heart

but into the stomach and is eliminated.” (As a result, He made

all foods clean.)

Mark 7:1-2320 Then He said, “What comes out

of a person—that defiles him.

Mark 7:1-2321 For from within, out of people’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual

immoralities, thefts, murders,

Mark 7:1-2322 adulteries, greed, evil actions, deceit, promiscuity, stinginess,

blasphemy, pride, and foolishness.

Mark 7:1-2323 All these evil things come from

within and defile a person.”

Titus 2:1414 He gave Himself for us to

redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a people for His own possession, eager to do

good works.

Wrong Equation:

Wrong Equation:Jesus + something = cleansing of sin or salvation from sin

Right Equation:

Right Equation:Jesus + nothing = cleansing of sin or salvation from sin

Titus 1:10-1615 To the pure, everything is pure, but to those who are defiled and

unbelieving nothing is pure; in fact, both their mind and conscience

are defiled.

Titus 1:10-1616 They profess to know God, but

they deny Him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient,

and disqualified for any good work.

3. God communicates that the appropriate response is to silence

the false teachers

Titus 1:1111 It is necessary to silence them; they overthrow whole households by teaching what they shouldn’t in

order to get money dishonestly.

Titus 1:1313 This testimony is true. So,

rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith

Titus 1:99 Holding to the faithful message as taught, so that he will be able both to encourage with sound

teaching and to refute those who contradict it.

2 Timothy 2:24-2624 The Lord’s slave must not quarrel, but must be gentle to everyone, able to teach, and

patient,

2 Timothy 2:24-2625 instructing his opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance leading them to

the knowledge of the truth.

2 Timothy 2:24-2626 Then they may come to their

senses and escape the Devil’s trap, having been captured by him to do

his will.

2 Timothy 4:22 Proclaim the message; persist in

it whether convenient or not; rebuke, correct, and encourage

with great patience and teaching.

Why do they need to be silenced?

False Teachers:Overthrowing Whole

Households

Titus 1:10-1611 It is necessary to silence them;

they overthrow whole households by teaching what they shouldn’t in

order to get money dishonestly.
