TIPS AND TRICKS FROM A GLOBAL FINALS IC HEAD APPRAISER

Reread the Challenge

• What are we supposed to do?• How do we earn points?• Is there anything we CAN’T do?

• Cross a line• Touch an apparatus• Talk during a specific part of the challenge• Stick mailing labels to something

• How much time are we given?• Is this a one part challenge or are there multiple parts?

DON’T take a Zero!

• Test your structure• Does it stand/float/hold any weight?

• Something is better than nothing!• Remove parts of the structure if necessary

• Have a Plan B• What if this idea doesn’t work? Then what will we do?

• Identify when something’s not working• GOOD teamwork does not mean you can’t say something is a BAD idea!

Essential Skills

•What holds up in water?•What holds weight?•What provides height?•What are connectors?•How do I build a stable base?•How do we communicate nonverbally?•What could protect something (like an egg)?
