TIMOTHY SOAR
“Photography, as a powerful medium of expression and communications, offers an infinite variety of perception,
interpretation and execution”
BACKGROUND
• Born in 1964
• His father was an enthusiastic amateur photographer
• Originally trained in engineering
• Early experience with a engineering consulting company
convinced him that he wanted a less
office-based life.
• Switched to a photography degree
• Got a job as an assistant to one of
Britain’s best architectural
photographers, Richard Bryant.
INSPIRATION AND INFLUENCES
• Architecture inspires and
impassions Timothy Soar.
According to Soar,
"Architecture represents a
great deal more than a need
for shelter.”
• Inspired by the AHMM’s
Yellow Building
• According to Soar, “it
delivers exquisite simplicity
out of a complex lattice. The
building has a lyrical poetry
in the way it wraps and folds
itself around the occupants –
deft, confident and
generous. It is one of
London’s great spaces."
AHMM’S Yellow Building
PRINCIPLES
• Explores the physical representation of a spatial idea; it
attempts to represent the meaning of place
• His work seeks to address the complexity of three
dimensional space, translating it into ordered
compositions.
• It illustrates the ideals of architecture and purity of form
• Careful descriptions of space explore continuity of
connected volumes; zones of light; and the geometric
ordering of planes, views and patterns.

STYLE OF WORKING
• Building a rapport with architects, learning about
their desires and ambitions
• Creating a dialogue that supports both the emotion
and financial investment in each project
• Employ tools of perspective control with
mathematical precision, which render the illusion of
deep space
• Think as if the photographs are the predictor of the
next project
• By refining and amplifying the ideas manifest in the
built work

ACHIEVEMENTS
• His published credits include covers and features in titles as diverse as; The Sunday Times, The Architectural Digest, Architectural Review, ID New York, The World of Interiors and Ag.
• His photography has been seen at The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Royal Institute of British Architects, The Royal Academy and has been supported internationally by public, private and corporate collections acquiring prints.
• Many of the most influential designers of our times have commissioned Tim, with his photographic insight celebrated by Lord Foster and Robert Venturi amongst many others.
"My work as a photographer is predicated on a desire to be an
advocate for design that elevates, to help construct an argument
where good design isn’t an occasional, rare and special thing but an everyday, routine and expected event."
