Hannah Kim, 3rd grade at elementary school

“This circuit is wrong!”about learning technology

Hello, my name is Hanna Kim, and I’m in 3rd grade at elementary school. I want to tell you my feelings and experiences about learning technology.

with momTechnology Educator

Few weeks ago, I went to mom’s lecture and I showed my ear folding rabbit and cat

bracelet.

ear foldingrabbit

using Tech D. I. Y.sewing circuit

When I showed the ear folding rabbit, I found some mistakes and told people at there, “This circuit is wrong!” I don’t understand but, somehow people found my explanation interesting and that’s the reason I

present my speech today.

when I was young...

When I was 3 years old, it was my first time I started to learn

technology.

lullaby cloudusing PicoCricket

Mom and I made a lullaby cloud using

PicoCricket.

(video) When the cloud senses darkness, the lullaby music

turns on.

cat chasing mouseusing PicoCricket

We also made a cat that chases

mouse.

When I push the button of the cat, the mouse shakes like it is running away. It shakes by the motor inside.

Make Faire 2008my first electronics kit!

When I was 3 years old, I went to Make Faire and saw many fun

things.

and saw many

fun things.

Mom presented Tech D.I.Y. projects

at there.

This is the Christmas costume my mom made for me. She made me a LED crown, LED dress, and a LED magic wand.

Once I followed my mom, at her New Media

Art Show.

learning video camerafrom TV producer

Since mom was so busy, I played iPad or learned video camera from Judice. But mom never allows me to use smartphones or watch TV usually. I agree with it. Firstly, it is bad for my eyes and secondly, they are

addictive to play or watch.

TechDIY.orgI made lots of things at Tech D.I.Y. projects with mom. I will tell you about things what I’ve learned from it.

snail lightlearning sewing and basic circuit

I made a snail light when I was in

first grade.

I learned how to sew and how to connect LEDs and

batteries.

ear folding rabbitlearning switch

This is the ear folding rabbit I made, at that time, I

learned switch.

(video) If rabbit fold its ears, electronic

current flows.

Octopus alien’s Quizlearning parallel circuit

I also made Octopus

alien’s Quiz.

From this, I learned how to connect many LEDs. If correct legs are connected, lights turn on. It was possible since I learned about parallel circuit.

Snowmanlearning transistor and photo cell

This one is my snowman

bracelet.

If photo cell detects darkness, transistor’s base opens and electronic current flows. If not, transistor’s base closes.

mindstormslearning robotics

Besides, I assembled MindStorms. MindStorms was fun to make or play, but it was boring to do again, and I can’t design differently.

codeforkids.net : scratchlearning programming

I started programming when I became 3rd grade. It is called Scratch. I program blocks and characters to move with my orders.

My last program was

“Ant Maze.”

http://codeforkids.net/?p=236The ant moves by

arrow keys.

http://codeforkids.net/?p=236If ant touches wall, it goes back to the first position where it

started.

http://codeforkids.net/?p=236It is also same for the ant meeting caterpillar or

bomb.

http://codeforkids.net/?p=236When it goes to queen ant, you win the game. You can see my Scratch code at CodeforKids.net.

“Learning by Making with your family!

And share it!!!”

In next semester, I will be making Scratch and Arduino together with my mom. I don’t want parents to give phones or computers to children to play games or surf internet. Instead of it, I want parents and

children make a doll or bracelet to learn technology like me. Also, I would like to share what I learned with my friends and family.

Thank you!KimHannah2005@gmail.com
