2010 Census Status Update

• All operations during 2010 on schedule• Mailback rates comparable to 2000; somewhat more proxy

response in nonresponse followup• Initial indications are that the 2010 operations yielded more

consistent results over tracts– Less variation in mailback rates– Less variation in completeness of population counts

• Indications of a better address list• A return of over $1.6 billion because of absence of natural

disasters and presence of active management controls

Coming before December 31, 2010o Official counts of the entire U.S. population for

purposes of apportionment, as mandated by U.S. Constitution

o Includes basic demographic information, as well as home ownership and relationship to householder data

• February/March: States Begin Receiving Block-level Counts for Redistricting
