Can We Save Our Spirit? From your editors… Anna Bortolus and Mary Anne Arthur
As many of you know, over the past 2 years, Binder Twine, our major sponsor of The Spirit has been unable to fund our printed newsletter due to their weather-‐related financial setbacks. Thanks to the generosity of our local sponsors – highlighted each month on our back page, we have been able to offset costs in 2012 and 2013 considerably. However, our current financial situation for The Spirit is dire. We barely covered the costs of this current edition. Printing and then distribution via Canada Post each month isn’t cheap – It costs about $650 per month for 1500 copies to make it into our mailboxes. This got your editors thinking…What is The Spirit about and why do we do it, anyway?
Anna: The Spirit is a reflection of, and extension of, and a reaching out to our community. I was asked last month what I thought the purpose of our newsletter was, and settled on ‘It’s about building community”. It is about telling our village stories, reaching out to everyone, informing and inspiring action, encouraging discussion, celebrating shared and personal successes, facing challenges and exploring ideas -‐ TOGETHER. It isn’t something easily or effectively done with electronic communication (although we’re working on offering options!). That’s why it is so critical that the printed publication of The Spirit continue.
And why do I do it each month? It’s a simple answer. It is a labour of love. Love for my home, Kleinburg. Love for my cherished friends, new and old, here. Love for our community and the threads (dare I say, Twine!) that hold us all

together. Love for the safe nurturing community where my children grew up. Love for Kleinburg Public School and the staff, students and parents who shaped my kids’ lives. Love for my fellow KARA Board members (and other community volunteers) who work so hard every month to make our community better. Love for our precious green spaces and for the beauty of Canada that McMichael embodies. Love for our world-‐class restaurants, shops and services which count me as an appreciative customer. Love for our quality of life in this heritage village– hard to beat, even in Canada.
Mary Anne: I am honoured to be a part of putting together The Spirit. I have lived in Kleinburg for 15 years and I think we have something unique here. We have a community spirit that is hard to find in the GTA, and I love being a part of spreading that spirit. I recently joined KARA as a volunteer director to give back to my community. The goals that KARA strives for in publishing The Spirit are to share stories about the individuals, groups and businesses that make up Kleinburg, Nashville, and Area, and to keep us all informed about what is going on in our area and what KARA is doing to try to help preserve the unique characteristics of our home. The Spirit brings us together and helps us celebrate our community.
The Spirit needs OUR SPIRIT. Please join us at Fe el th e Spi rit , Be the Sp irit Have a drink and some appetizers with friends. Share conversation and the spirit of the season. And, help us save The Spirit.

Dr. Karyn Gordon @ KPS gym
Wed. Nov. 20, 7pm Dr. Karyn is one of North America’s leading relationship / parenting experts, a best-‐selling author, a media personality, motivational speaker and founder of dk Leadership.
You are invited to hear her speak on Wed. Nov. 20 at 7pm in the KPS gym. When we live in a culture of immediate gratification that is ‘all about me’ – and with Generation Y being the richest in history, how can parents effectively teach an attitude of gratitude and empathy for others? Research tells us that empathy is a cornerstone of EQ (Emotional Intelligence), which is essential for a child’s overall happiness as well as for future career opportunities. In this keynote, Dr. Karyn teaches 10 simple things parents can do starting today to develop empathy and gratitude in their children and teens! Please RSVP by email -‐ fchari@rogers.com with “Dr. Karyn” in the subject line.
Congratulations Dolcini Just recently, Joseph Moninaro, owner and pastry chef of Dolcini, was approached to create a cake for Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Prime Minister Enrico Letta of Italy. Joseph dedicated many hours to the design and construction of the cake. Once he came up with the idea of how the cake would look, the drawing was sent out and approved by the Prime Minister's staff. Health Canada required a pre-‐inspection, a list of ingredients & procedures, as well as being present during the baking of the cake.
Once the base of the cake was completed, it was carefully wrapped and transported to the banquet hall and assembly of the landmarks on the cake was completed. At this point, it was once again necessary that a representative from Health Canada be present. After the cake was completely decorated, the RCMP inspected it yet again before giving the final approval that all was good!
Presentation of the cake was made to both Prime Ministers and guests and just by looking at the picture, one can see that this work of art was well-‐received by everyone! As Joseph says, 'it was truly an honour to have gone through this experience and hopefully we will have the opportunity to do something of this magnitude again in the future"!

Colorado Blue Spruce Memorial Tree at Kleinburg United Church
As Remembrance Day approaches we would like to share the unique and touching story of the Blue Spruce tree located in front of Kleinburg United Church.
As soon as the news of Germany’s surrender reached Canada on May 7, 1945, Mr. and Mrs. E.H. (Chas) MacTaggert contacted Dominion Nurseries Limited, Toronto, Ontario and ordered the tree at a cost of $15.
Chas MacTaggert, who laid out flower beds, planted trees and generally looked after the grounds of the United Church, recorded the following on the receipt for the tree:
“This tree was bought on the afternoon of the day Germany was defeated, by Mrs. MacTaggert and myself and planted in front of the church by James Devons, Urguard Shunk and myself in the evening as a living memory to our boys over seas, especially those who will never come back.”
It is a special story and also a tribute to the couple who selflessly arranged an instant memorial. Page 3

The local women’s group has been a staple in the community following its inception in 1973 by Sandy Jones and Gail Wilson as a way for women, especially mothers to meet and ‘Take 5’ minutes out of their busy lives to relax and socialize with one another in a communal setting. Take 5 has evolved since then, however the tradition still holds strong today. The group meets every Wed. from 9:30 to 11 am at the Kline House. Coffee and breakfast are prepared for moms, while kids are entertained with arts, crafts and snacks by a wonderful caregiver. Charitable components, such as raising funds for a women’s shelter and holding food drives, have been added to the group’s portfolio over the years.
