Gettysburg Battlefield Features “Extinct” Breed

By Tracey Levasseur

After three days of re-enacting the 150th

Gettysburg battles in late June, I took a day off to

be a tourist at Gettysburg National Military Park

on July 1. For several hours I walked around

ground made hallow July 1-3, 1863, and

snapped photos of many monuments and

significant areas of the battlefield.

Coming around out of The Wheatfield (the only

wheatfield that’s spelled with a capital W), in a

shady grove of trees I stopped to take a couple

of shots of the Irish Brigade Monument.

This 19’ 6” granite tribute to the New York

regiments of the Irish Brigade was dedicated on

July 2. 1888. It features an ornate Celtic cross

sculpted

from red

granite. At its base lies a life-sized

representation of an Irish wolfhound which

appears to be waiting for its master to return

home from battle. Interestingly, an inscription

under the dog’s paws states that the breed

“has been extinct for more than one hundred

years.”

Meeting Minutes April 29, 2013

Attendees: Chris Calcinari, Karen Gatchell, Carroll Goodwin, Pollie Goodwin, Shania Hersey, Steve Hersey, Eileen Kelly, Tracey Levasseur,

Susan Metcalf, Charlotte Micheliche, Karen Norteman, Gloria Pasquini, Mary Smith

Guests: Lauren Booth, Charlie Cragin from the Maine Golden Retriever Club

President Steve Hersey called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.

Motion to Accept Minutes of the Last Meeting: Chris made the motion to accept; Susan seconded.

President's Report: We do have a Sunshine Committee, and Sarah Todd is its Chair. If someone knows that someone is ill, in the hospital, passed on, lost a relative or an animal, etc. PLEASE get in contact with Sarah, or with a board member or anyone else who can contact Sarah to send cards on behalf of the club. Recently, there have been a few members' events that we've unintentionally missed, so please, pass this information on to anyone not at the meeting. Sarah's email is poc-sec@comcast.net.

Corresponding Secretary's Report: None. Lots of email from AKC, mostly promotional.

Treasurer's Report: Steve gave the Treasurer's Report in Sandy's absence.

Committee Reports:

Match Committee Two guests, Charlie Cragin and Lauren Booth, attended the meeting at the request of the Maine Golden Retriever Club. They came to answer questions about their role in our fall match.

Charlie Cragin reported that he and Lauren are Board members of the MGRC. The MGRC was formed in July of 2011 and is in the process of completing AKC requirements for forming a club. New clubs are now required to conduit sanctioned B matches in conjunction with existing clubs, who act as mentors to the new clubs. New clubs are required to hold a minimum of 2 B matches, not less than 6 months apart. MGRC is asking to pair with us to hold an obedience match for Goldens only, in conjunction with our fall match. (They will do a conformation match at Vacationland's Saturday show at the Cluster.) This would require us to hold our match on a date that is at least 6 months later than May 18, or no earlier than November 19.

Discussion: We have 2 rings at the match; normally, we have obedience and rally in the morning, and conformation in the afternoon. If MGRC holds its obedience match in a second ring in the afternoon, the Goldens could compete in our all-breed

obedience match in the morning, and at their own Goldens-only match on the same day. Do we have the room to run the Golden OB match concurrently with conformation in the afternoon? Last year we had 2 rings, 2 judges for conformation, and the match concluded early in the afternoon.

Consensus: We do want to work with MGRC to help them put on their B match and satisfy that requirement for AKC. We can work our schedule around to accommodate them; the logistics involve whether or not Finish Forward is available on the Sunday date(s) we choose.

Steve asked for a volunteer to be our Match Chair. Charlotte volunteered to take entries and do the judges' books. Lauren Booth will be one of MGRC's match chairs.

Suggested Dates: MGRC needs for the match to be held on November 19 or later. If Sunday, November 17 is the only date when Finish Forward is available, Charlie will apply for a waiver from AKC.

November 24: Steve made the motion for this date; Karen Gatchell seconded. Fallback date: December 15. Steve will contact the club about the date after contacting Shannon at Finish Forward about the venue.

Meet the Breeds Save the date: Sunday, September 15 at Tractor Supply. Carroll has contacted Tractor Supply and secured the date.

YCKC is the host club this year. We need to get the word out before we break for the summer. We need a chair for the event and someone to make flyers to hand out at next month's meeting. Any volunteers?

Cluster Committee There was a discussion about holding a used book sale at the Cluster. The problem is that we run into sales tax issues if we sell at the show. We don't want to conflict with a regular raffle, so we won't hold the book sale as a raffle. Steve suggested that we give away the books, rather than sell them, because of the sales tax liability.

Entries close on Wednesday, May 1. Sandy is very busy.

Setup: 1 PM on Wednesday, May 15, at Wassamki. There will be pizza and refreshments for workers after setup is done.

Carroll asked Chris if Fred will help with parking. Chris will ask Fred. Fred and Chris's sister Gail are also available to help with stewarding.

Parking Passes: These are available for staff and volunteers. See Carroll if you need one. Steve and Karen N. have passes for the obedience and conformation stewards.

Tablecloths: Teri bought them; they were drop-shipped to Ocean State Embroidery and are being stitched with the cluster logo.

Fence Banners: It's still not too late to solicit advertising banners for the fence. The cost is $50 for the weekend, or barter of similar value for the raffle bin.

MGRC will hold a conformation match for Goldens only in Ring 6 after Best in Show on Saturday the 18th.

Unfinished Business: Karen G. asked about the membership list. It didn't go out with newsletter; it was emailed. Steve will ask Sarah to resend the list to everybody via email. Charlotte doesn't have a working email; she asked for a paper copy.

New Business: Our next meeting will take place on Monday, June 3 because May 27 is Memorial Day.

There was no 50-50 raffle this month because Sandy W. was not present. Last month's winner was Pollie Goodwin, who won $67.

Chris moved to adjourn, Gloria seconded. The meeting was adjourned 8:04 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Karen Norteman Recording Secretary

I would like to announce the arrival of a litter of Irish

Setters of 6 girls and 5 boys to Diva(Airechta's Water

I have a quick little brag. This past

weekend we took our puppy girl Tessa

(Flamingacre Sleek Red N Sexy) to the

ISCNE specialty and the two supported

entries at Ladies. She won Best In

Sweeps all 3 days and won her class all

3 days as well. We were proud of our

little girl :)
