Status of Research Output from Libya

The average annual production rate at The University of Al-Fateh is:

1.4 article/100 academic staff

Arabic and African countries have the lowest number of patents, trademarks and high-technology exports.

MEDICAL PUBLICATIONS FROM 2002-2006

Four major problems are facing scientific research in Arab countries in general and in

Libya in particular:

1) Brain Drain 2) Lack of funding 3) Lack of scientific infrastructure and

incompetent supportive staff, and 4) Teaching overload.

How to get money for research in Libya

Asking for more funds whilst getting the most out of the available resources

Researchers have to promote the need for research and have to justify expenditure on research projects

Linking research to education

Infrastructures for research

1) lack of momentum at the managerial level of universities to make scientific research a priority and

2) lack of reasonable development plan of the technical supportive staff.

Research in Libya: few myths and misconceptions

The priority of Research should be directed to solving problems of society rather than publishing.

There is a bias toward publishing research output from Libya

Research needs huge amounts of money and resources

Research written in Arabic is not publishableEngaging in Research does not promote my careerAll research ideas have been tried before

somewhere else The Libyan University culture is not based on

research and I can not change thisLibyan researchers are not as intelligent as should

be

Conclusions

Only a positive attitude and optimistic approach would yield fruitful rewards. Among all the solutions I proposed I think networking with colleagues inside and outside Libya is the key to share ideas and debate issues related to science and pragmatically resolve problems.

This symposium is a leap forward to network young talents and connect Libyan scholars.

وشكرا بالتوفيق تمنياتي
