Motorcycling

• The UK has 1,350,000 motorcycles registered• Annual Registrations 92,000 from 134,000 in 2004• Fastest sales growth is in Scooters and un-faired bikes• Second fastest is Adventure bikes – thanks, Ewan McGregor

• Motorcyclists are many times more likely to undertake advanced skills courses than any other road user group• 328 fatalities in 2012 – 40% reduced from 05-09 Av.

What is the BMF?

• Founded in 1960• Representing many one-make and local motorcycle clubs• To counter the consequences of “The Wild Ones”• To provide a link for the clubs• To engage with government, councils, community leaders• To develop rider training courses• To encourage shows, events, rallies and friendship• To represent all that is fun and good in motorcycling

What is the BMF?

• Direct Membership – 7,000• Club Affiliated Membership – 78,000• Annual Shows at Peterborough and Kelso

What does a rider really look for in a surface?• Consistent surface profile and texture, across the full road width• Predictable grip• No loose material• No significant texture/grip changes • Selected Ironworks treated with High Friction material• No C of G disturbance

• Changes in surfaces formed away from points of braking/steering• Lateral changes on level < 40mm• Longitudinal changes in level < 6mm• Undulations at normal crossfall/longfall gradients• No standing water
