Self Evaluation Check List for Going into Business (Starting Your Own Business)
Check the answer that best describes You!
Are you a self-starter? I do things on my own. Nobody has to tell me. If someone gets me started, I keep going all right. Easy does it. I don’t put myself out until I have to.
How do you feel about other people? I like people. I can get along with just about anybody. I have plenty of friends - I don’t need anyone else. Most people irritate me.
Self Evaluation
Can You Lead Others? I can get most people to go along when I start something. I can give orders if someone tells me what we should do. I let someone else get things moving. Then I go along if I
feel like it.
Can you take responsibility? I like to take charge of things and see them through. I’ll take over if I have to, but I’d rather let someone else
be responsible. There’s always some eager beaver around wanting to
show how smart he is. I say let him.
Characteristics of Successful Entrepreneur

DIVERSITY
Definition
“The degree of basic human differences among a given population” (Samuel C. Certo, Modern Management, Prentice Hall, 1997, 565)
Areas of Diversity:
Race Gender Ethnicity Customs Religion Social Class Physical Ability Age Education Geographic Location Language Talents and Skills
Biblical Foundation of Diversity
Genesis 11:1-9 Result of disobedience Results from pride and attempt to rule on
man’s terms and not God’s direction Main types of Biblical Diversity:
LanguageNations
Bias - Free Communication Suggestions
RACE AND ETHNICITY (Northville Adaptation)
Notice words, images, and insinuations that reinforce stereotypes
Only refer to race or ethnic origin when relevant to topic Avoid language that has questionable racial or ethnic
connotations Avoid patronizing racial or ethnic groups with tokenism
in news stories, or anecdotes Review publications and media to ensure all are
adequately and honestly represented
Bias Free Communications
Gender Use gender neutral words/phrases Address both female and male perspectives with
phrases like members and their spouses. Use parallel words when specifying gender like “he/she”
or “women/men”, or use a disclaimer stating that the use of the pronoun, he, includes male and female.
Do not stereotype by gender. Avoid describing men by profession and women by
physical attributes.
Bias Free Communication
Age Mention age only when relevant Ask individuals or groups what they prefer to be called. Avoid cliches. Use words that actually describe rather
than stereotype. Remember that children and older persons are
individuals, and they can speak for themselves, do not assume you know what they want.
Remember that you may underestimate a child’s or older person’s capability or energy, ask discerning questions.
“To freely pat and touch children and older people simply because of their age is presumptuous and biased”.
Bias Free Communication
Physically/Mentally Challenged Recognize that a handicap is a disability only when it
severely precludes a specific task. A disability is a legal disqualification, “people who use
wheelchairs are not disabled unless their handicap is relevant to a task performance.
Concentrate on performance rather than a handicapper characteristic, e.g. The blind operator should be The Operator, the hard of hearing accountant, should be the Accountant.
Ask individuals or groups how they wish to be addressed/characterized.
