Literary DevicesLiterary DevicesSetting

The Hunchback of Notre Dame takes the place during the 1400’s. Paris is an obvious location, especially within the region of Notre-Dame’s Cathedral.

Point of ViewThe story was told in third person omniscient.

Literary Devices• Imagery

- architecture portrayed the town’s culture as significant - description of Quasimodo’s deformities

• Irony- Claude Frollo rescued Quasimodo & gave him a home & ultimate death of

Quasimodo- beginning of the novel Quasimodo - solitary state

end of the novel Quasimodo - died in a complete state of solitude- Captain Phoebus was in charge of the arrest & execution of La Esmeralda- Sister Gudule La Esmeralda’s mother.

• Paradox- Claude Frollo evil priest.

• Mood- Dark & Gloomy & Tragic

• Metaphor- The Devil

- Djali (La Esmeralda’s goat)- Quasimodo’s disfigurement

Quote & ResponseQuote & Response"Do you know what friendship is?" he inquired. "Yes," replied the

Egyptian; "it is to be as brother and sister, two souls which touch each other without uniting, like two fingers of the same hand." "And love?" proceeded Gringoire. "Oh! love!" said she, and her voice trembled, and her eye sparkled. "It is to be two and yet but oneit is a man and a woman blending into an angelit is heaven itself."

Personal Response Although there were many minor characters to keep track of, I

enjoyed reading The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. It was very different than the Disney movie, and it did not have a happy ending. I wish the ending would have been less tragic.

Themes & ComparisonThemes & ComparisonLove

- La Esmeralda Captain Phoebus- Quasimodo La Esmeralda

Loyalty- Quasimodo Claude Frollo (initially)- Quasimodo La Esmeralda (rising action)

Isolation/Judgment- Quasimodo (before the climax and after the climax)- La Esmeralda (her culture and origin)

OthelloClaude Frollo could be paralleled with Othello’s Iago. He would

take infinite measures to gain what he desired, not caring who he harmed. He even made the initiative to attempt kidnapping La Esmeralda and murder Captain Phoebus. The closest relation between the two is manipulation of others. Frollo manipulated Pierre Gringoire.
