ALTHOUGH the West Highland Way is traditionally a walker's paradise, for some it can be regarded almost as Scotland’s Pilgrim’s Way.
Although a tad shorter, than the Camino de Santiago, the time honoured trek to Santiago de Compostela, which stretches over 780 km, the West Highland Wy is bit more walkable at 155 km.
Don’t forget you may come across others on the way who have chosen other ways to navi-gate it.
Cycling is now permitted the whole length of the Way and it’s a great terrain for mountain bikes
Horse riding is also allowed and the route offers some wonderful treks along the distance.
As part of Scotland's right to roam legislation you can even now take your dog along the way for most of the year, as long as it is under proper control.
You are now able to even do the tricky Conic Hill section during
the lambing season (although not with a dog in the enclosed lambing fields). Land managers will still be able to close sections
of the way for short periods for your safety, if they are carrying out hazardous operations, but this should be clearly signed with a reason, a time limit and, where practicable, an alternative route in place.
Also you must be sure to re-move any of your dog’s business.
In the pages of this paper you will find a wealth of options for overnighting – in style in a hotel or b & b or on one of the excel-lemt camp sites that have grown up over the years.
Wild camping is allowed but should be done in small numbers and only for two or three nights in the one place. Great care should be taken over choice of site – to be avoided: enclosed fields of crops or farm
animals and keep away from buildings, roads or historic struc-tures. If you want to create some warmth along your journey you are allowed to light a fire Wherever possible, use a stove rather than light an open fire. If you do wish to light an open fire, keep it small, under control and supervised – fires that get out of control can cause major damage, for which you might be liable.
Obviously best not to light an open fire during prolonged dry periods or in areas such as forests, woods, farmland, or on peaty ground or near to buildings or in cultural heritage sites where dam-age can be easily caused.
And remember – remove all traces of an open fire before you leave the area you lit it in.
Take access – responsibly
Local authority cuts have taken a heavy toll on the tourist information sector. This former TIC at Tarbet at the head of Loch Lomond is no more.

Power to the peopleThe mountainous country that marks the end of the West Highland Way has proved immensely productive over the years thanks to the far sighted vision of the founders of the British aluminium industry. Now new uses are opening up for the truly green hydro power produced.

SINCE EARLY on in its life, the West Highland Way has fostered competition. This year the an-nual WHW Race is being held on June 24, with a start at Milngavie Railway Station t the serious hour of 1 am.
Numbers are strictly limited and the event is regularly booked out well in advance. Entrants must have their own motorised backup, consisting of at least two people, one of whom must be capable of covering the last two sections with you (or find you) if assistance is required or during the hours of darkness.
This year marks the thirty third year of the race, which is regarded as one of the finest of the world’s long established “ultra marathons.”
Entry is limited to 265 run-
ners each year, with the relative-ly small size of the field helping to preserve the friendly nature of the event. The 95 mile race includes 14,760ft of ascent.
Not for the faint hearted, Along the route you need to be checked within specified time limits at certain check points. You must also have adequate rel-evant experience to take part in an event of this nature – obvious-ly not for complete beginners!
World records leaders so far are Paul Giblin (2015 - 14:14:44) and Lucy Colquhoun (2007 - 17:16:20) hold the course records.
Last year a pensioner, grand-mother-of-four Norma Bone, made headlines by becoming the oldest woman to complete the 95-mile (153km) West Highland Way in one go.
Ms Bone, 64, finished the ultramarathon after running through two nights and a day from Glasgow to Fort William.
It is said that more people have conquered Everest than had completed the West Highland Way in one go.
Rob Reid, a 70 year old from Tarbert in Argyll also made the record books last year by becom-ing the oldest man to complete the race – in an incredible 29 hours and 58 mins. Each of the runners in the race had to comply with race rules by having a support crew to help them. The crews met their runners at stages
along the route to give them changes of clothes, food and wa-ter. Runners are also allowed to have a support runner with them for the last 42 miles of the race.
Ms Bone said at the time: “I don’t know why I did it but it’s something that has been very deep inside me for a long-time and I wasn’t prepared to sit back without attempting it.
“I knew my brain could get me there, but I just didn’t know if my body could get to the finish.
“I am so glad I did it. You have to want to do it. I wanted that goblet they give you at the end for completing it.”
It's not a race, but then again

MILNGAVIE station (shown right) is the classic start point for the West Highland Way. Regular trains call here from the centre of Glasgow and step just outside the station and an underpass beckons you on your Way – via the attractions of Milngavie, which even include a handily placed Marks & Spencer.
However, should you fancy less exertion, or just have a shorter window of opportunity for undertaking the whole route, there are number of options for setting off an a shorter journey – or ending it before you reach Fort William.
Half way up Loch Lomond, Ardlui has a station stop on the West Highland Line.
The Way actually follows the far bank of the loch, but a handy ferry service will spirit you across (this can work both ways, to allow walkers to come across and enjoy the facilities that Ardlui has to offer.
Farther on there are stations at Crianlarich, Tyndrum and Bridge of Orchy, all of which link up with the Way and offer all sorts of lesser options than undertaking the full journey.
Besides the rail option, where the Way runs close to the main Glasgow-Fort William road, there is the option of long-distance buses – some of which go on beyond Fort William to the wilds of Skye.
When you reach Fort William it is worth seeing if you can get a place on the ever-popular Jacobite steam train which covers the top rated line out to the coast at Mallaig.
Even if you find it booked out, there are regular service trains that cover the route and at the very least you should consider a trip across the world famous Glenfinnan viaduct just as far as Glenfinnan station where you will find an excellent rail museum, shop and authentic restored Dining Car – as well as restored sleeping car.

THERE’S sometimes something to be said for the old ways of do-ing things. Long before the concept of the Long Distance Walk-way was born there were such things as Rights of Way and public footpaths. This long established marker by the Glencoe roadside indicates a well worn path over the hills to Kinlochleven by The Devil’s Stair-case – it was a route still taken by the new-fangled West Highland Way, when it was born.
Scotland’s public access legislation opened up virtually all the hills of the country to the walker – with the proviso that the access taken should be “responsible.”
So look out for the old Right of Way signs and, remember, you can build in your own diversions and deviations – always remem-bering that for the people who work the land, the countryside is their factory floor – so respect it, man!
Follow the signs…

Long regarded by climbers and walkers as a popular rendezvous, the Rod & Reel is a family-run bar and restaurant.
You can find good food and a relaxing drink in our friendly and comfortable atmosphere.
We are open all year, and invite walking/fishing clubs to ring Lesley or Liz to book for that special
occasion.
A FREQUENT sight in today’s countryside is a church or chapel that has found a new use.
The one above, appropriately enough in Church Road, Strath-fillan (by Tyndrum) has turned itself into The Artisan Café and Craft Studio. The founders (a group of local mums) explain: “The name came from our crafting days when we made lots of crafts to sell locally. Now in the café workshop we are continuing to make and also run a variety of courses throughout the year from candle making, wet and needle felting, silk painting, and children’s crafts."
All locally crafted…
