A quick introduction to the human heart

THE HEART

THERE IS ONE IMMEDIATE NEED FOR THE HEART

THE HEART IS ESSENTIAL FOR PUMPING BLOOD THROUGHOUT THE BODY--WITHOUT IT WE WOULD NOT GET THE OXYGEN OUR CELLS NEED TO SURVIVE

LOCATION OF THE HEART

Left of the midline posterior to sternum in the mediastinum

THE HEART CONSISTS OF FOUR CHAMBERS

Right atriumRight ventricleLeft atriumLeft ventricle

Looks like a lot to learn.

RIGHT ATRIUM

The right atrium receives blood from the Superior and Inferior Vena Cava, this is deoxygenated blood The blood flows from there into the right ventricle through the tricuspid valve. Valves are important--they keep blood from flowing back into the heart

RIGHT VENTRICLE

Blood in the right ventricle is still deoxygenated

Blood from the right ventricle is pushed out of the heart into the pulmonary artery where it is transported to the lungs

There is a valve between the pulmonary artery and the right ventricle-pulmonary semilunar valve

In the lungs oxygen is received into the blood

Follow the arrows to see how blood flows through the heart.

LEFT ATRIUM

After the blood has oxygen, it is returned to the heart through the pulmonary veins into the left atrium.

In left atrium blood is pushed into the left ventricle through the bicuspid valve.

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE VALVES

RIGHT VENTRICLE

The left ventricle receives oxygenated blood from the left atrium

From here blood is pushed out to the body through the aorta.

CARDIAC MUSCLE TISSUE

LAYERS OF THE HEART

Epicardium: outermost layer of the heart

Myocardium: is the heart muscle

Endocardium: innermost layer made up of simple squamous epithelium

WHAT STRUCTURES CAN YOU IDENTIFY?

BLOOD FLOW THROUGH THE HEART

AUTONOMIC INNERVATION OF THE HEART

THE END (HOPE YOUR HEART IS STILL

PUMPING)
