The Equation

The is a symbol for change, so basically the denominator means change in velocity.

Applying the FormulaWe will be bridging together math (algebra) and science (physics) by applying the force formula to a vehicle. Showing the force that the three different vehicles can exert in kilograms per square meter.

How long does a crash take?

It has been estimated that the average crash takes 0.07 seconds, so that is what we will be using throughout the power point for the time variable.

Velocity in which the vehicles are traveling?

Since in the video clips we you will be viewing the vehicles are traveling at 40mph, or 17.8 meters per second. We will be using 17.8 m/sec as the velocity of our vehicles. But since we are using the change in velocity, which is 17.8 m/sec to 0 m/sec, because the vehicles are stopping; the change in velocity is -17.8. Though the negative sign is irrelevant in this equation.

Hummer

Time=0.07 secondsMass=2,150 kg Velocity= -17.8m/s*

*Whether or not the velocity is negative or positive is irrelevant.

Hummer

1. Plug in the numbers for the variables.

2. Divide 17.8 by 0.07 to get 254.29.

3. Multiply 254.29 by 2,150 to get 527,373.5

Smart Car

Time=0.07 secondsMass= 730 kg Velocity= -17.8m/s*

Smart Car1. Plug in the numbers for the variables

2. Divide 17.8 by 0.07 to get 254.29.

3. Multiply 254.29 by 730 to get 185,632.

Smart Car

Mercedes-Benz

Time=0.07 secondsMass=1,620 kg Velocity= -17.8m/s*

Mercedes-Benz1. Plug in the numbers for the variables.

2. Divide 17.8 by 0.07 to get 254.29.

3. Multiply 254.29 by 1,620

Conclusion Force of Hummer: 527,373.5 kg/m²

Force of Smart Car: 185,632 kg/m²

Force of Mercedes-Benz: 411,949.8 kg/m²
