THE ECHO OCT. - DEC. 2018
Brothers,
In the younger years of my life I was
not a person who was an example of
how a young man should live his life.
Perhaps there was a time when I was
an example of how a young person
should not behave. Then a period came
in my life when I didn’t see any hope
that I could provide a life for my family
and what they deserved. I turned to
God, and He has listened to my pray-
ers. We received what we prayed for.
After I joined the Order, at the end of
our meetings we prayed for our broth-
ers, their family members or relatives
who needed prayer. That prayer can
help us to recover from illness, ease our
pain or help us find peace after we lose
a loved one.
My Brothers, I encourage you to ask for
our prayers. Even if you are a Brother
not active anymore, you are still a
member of the Knights of Columbus
and still our Brother Knight.
The Summer time was pretty quiet in
our Council, but now we are back to
business. The August 25th Golf tour-
nament has been rescheduled for Sep-
tember 29th. Let’s hope that the weath-
er allows our friends to have a good
time. In October we will honor Clergy
in the District — October 1st is the
Clergy Steak Fry. On October 14th
we’ll have the annual Sisters’ Oktober-
fest. Also in the month of October we
will attend two fundraising events. One
is for the House of
Friendship the other
is for theCarmelite
Sisters of St. Joseph.
We will also attend
the annual Bishops Banquet.
Our other project for the fall is making
the Nativity Scenes. We will be selling
these crafts in Kitchener churches, in
the Schwaben Club and at the
Christkindl market. The annual Chil-
dren’s Christmas party as usual will be
in St. Francis Parish Hall. The Memo-
rial Mass for our deceased members is
on November 11th at 11:45 am at
Blessed Sacrament Church. Everybody
is welcome to pray for our past Broth-
ers.
Brothers, our membership seems to
decrease with each passing Fraternal
Year. Our biggest challenge for Council
1504 is increasing our membership.
Soon we will be recruiting in Kitchener
Churches. The future of Council 1504
requires the success of our recruitment
drive and accept as many new mem-
bers as possible.
God Bless and Vivat Jesus,
Mike Szabo

Dear Brother Knights and families,
October in Canada is blessed by
Thanksgiving. Traditionally, the
reality of the harvest and its abun-
dance would automatically move
one to gratitude – to give thanks
for the wealth of produce begotten
by Providence, hard work and per-
severance.
Giving anything has to be directed
towards a recipient. If we give a
gift it has to be to someone – a re-
cipient. Giving thanks also has to
have an object; one to whom we
give our thanks. For Christians
that recipient of thanks has always
been the Father, the Son and the
Holy Spirit. By giving thanks, we
automatically acknowledge another
we are grateful towards. For
Christians, celebrating Thanksgiv-
ing is an act of faith in our Provi-
dential God who loves and provides
for us. Thankfulness fosters an
environment of peace, joy and sat-
isfaction. Giving thanks isn’t just
a polite action, it is a disposition
that dips into the reality of abun-
dance in God’s Kingdom. We feel
confident in this sense of abun-
dance and it reaches out to others
to form bonds of generosity, kind-
ness, appreciation and hope.
Thanksgiving is an attitude. The
very word is found in the heart of
the word gr-atitude!
Being thankful is an act of faith
which acknowledges the generosity
of another. By it we say we believe
in the other’s goodness. Gestures
of gratitude draw out goodness in
both the giver and the receiver.
Jean Vanier says: “When we reveal
to people our belief in them, their
hidden beauty rises to the surface
where it may be seen more clearly
by all.” Thanking another is an
acknowledgement of them; that we
appreciate
what they
have done;
who they
are. It is a
positive
expression that we believe in their
goodness. We make them feel ap-
preciated just as their generosity to
us makes us feel appreciated.
Thanksgiving opens us to apprecia-
tion to the true value of others and
of ourselves.
May this Thanksgiving deepen our
appreciation of God as Providential
Father, as supportive Brother and
as Loving Spirit. And in turn, may
His generosity fill us with new ap-
preciation of our own selves and of
our brothers and sisters.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Fr. Larry Parent

Santa Claus is coming to town! Annual Knights of Columbus
CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY
Sunday, December 2, 2018 1:00 to 3:00 PM
St. Francis of Assisi Church 49 BLUERIDGE AVENUE, KITCHENER
Thanks go to Brother Wayne and Marilyn Curry for organizing
the event and to all who volunteer their time to make the
Children’s Christmas Party a success!
Brother Knights,
Decades ago, when train travel was
the vogue, I was taking a trip with
my parents to New York City to see
the 1951 World Series. Travelling
with us to the “Big Apple” was a
friend of my father’s who worked
on the railroad. During the trip I
asked him how fast we were going.
He said, “Gary, we were going so
fast, the lamp posts were going by
like a picket fence!” It is true, the
older we get “the lampposts go by
like a picket fence” and before we
know it 2018 will be nothing but a
memory.
Over the past several years as co-
ordinator of our newsletter, I’ve
had the uncomfortable chore of
pleading for messages from our
contributors in order to make The
Echo deadline. Guess who’s in the
catbird seat now?
We were challenged facing several
vacant executive positions but with
the intent to have a successful fra-
ternal year, several members
stepped up and now Council 1504
has a complete slate of officers for
2018/2019. A busy scheduled is on
the horizon for the Kitchener
Knights of Columbus and your new
executive is inviting welcomed
membership participation.
As well as co-ordinating Council’s
newsletter The Echo, preparing
news items and photos for the web-
site and acting as the Public Rela-
tions voice representing the Kitche-
ner K of C, I’m counting on your
support while acting as Deputy
Grand Knight.
A substantial resource of working
capital for Council 1504 is the an-
nual Ontario State’s Charity’s
Draw for 2019. Hoping to avoid the
delayed availability of lottery tick-
ets experienced from the last draw,
as your DGK I will be organizing
the sale of tickets looking for sales
support
again.
It’s that time
of year when
we extend the
Season’s best
to our loved ones and friends. It
goes without saying that health is
foremost on our wish list followed
by success and peace. Please re-
ceive my sincere hope that in the
coming year, you and your family
enjoy this festive and Holy season
and experience all the amenities on
your wish list. Before you know it,
the buds and birds of Spring will be
here and, until then, there is an
age-related colloquialism that best
expresses good luck and good
health, “Don’t take any wooden
nickels!”

COMING EVENTS
Brother Mac Graham reports activities are ramping up into the fall/winter season at our Council. There are opportunities for everyone to get involved!
Saturday Fellowship – The Lounge in the Upper hall will re-open on Saturdays beginning Sept 22nd. Hours may
vary but 2:00-4:00pm is the tentative time. Come out for some lively conversation and … Notre Dame Football.
Nativity Scene Yard Sale – Council 1504 will be hosting a Nativity Scene Yard Sale on Saturday, December 1st
from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm. This will be a great opportunity to pick up some Christmas gifts for loved ones. If you can
help out on the day of the sale, please let either Mac Graham or Wayne Curry know.
3rd Annual K-W Trivia Challenge – Committees are now being formed to prepare for our Trivia Challenge. This
year’s event date has been changed to March 1st, but we need to start now in order to make the event a huge success!
We are looking for help currently with a “Questions Committee” and for help formatting the questions onto a Power
Point Presentation. If you can help, please let Ted Jasica know you’re interested.
Important Note re: Scrap Metal – Due to Security Concerns at our hall, we are no longer collecting scrap metal.
We will continue to host our “Great Spring Cleanup” in May, however, any items you collect over the course of the
year should be stored at your home and brought to us the day of the event.
Thank you, Brother Knights, for all you do to make our community a better place. Keep up the great work!

Bon Voyage Brother Chris Saturday, August 11, 2018
KITCHENER — A perfect day welcomed many Council
1504 members, their family and friends at the K of C
Open House on Saturday, August 11th as they feted
Brother Chis Pugh.
In town on a short visit, Chris is about to venture west to
Edmonton where he will enter the seminary on his jour-
ney to become a member of the diocesan priesthood.
After completing his PhD a year ago, Brother Chris Pugh
left the Council to take a position as a teacher at Bran-
don University. During that time Chris decided to enter
the seminary in Edmonton.
While a member of Council 1504, Chris was honoured
with the Brother Dan Dineen Award of Distinction; as-
cended to the Fourth Degree and then Faithful Naviga-
tor of the Father Funcken Assembly. Inspired by his
Christian attitude, Chris inaugurated several unique and
innovative Council events that were regularly attended.
We wish Brother Chis Pugh God speed and much suc-
cess on his mission to the priesthood.

A Big Day at The
Training Complex Thursday, August 16, 2018
KITCHENER — It was the wail of the
sirens and the flashing of lights that
lit up the faces of the kids riding in
the two big Kitchener Department’s
fire engines.
Volunteer members of the Kitchener
Fire Department and the Waterloo
Regional Police hosted over 100
youngsters ranging in age from 10 to
15 years old on Thursday, August 16
as part of COPS, the Community Out-
reach Program.
The annual event was held at the
Waterloo Region Emergency Services
Training and Research Centre com-
plex located at 1001 Erbs Road, Wa-
terloo where the youngsters partici-
pated in live fire demonstrations,
search and rescue exercises and
competed in the Firefight’s Chal-
lenge.
As a member of Council 1504, co-
ordinator and retired Public Educa-
tion Officer for Kitchener Fire Brother
Kevin Schmalz said the event has a
long history over the past 20 years
for children that don’t have the op-
portunity to attend a summer camp,
who are either financially or socially
affected. Summer activities at com-
munity centres Centreville Chicopee,
Mill & Courtland and Kingsdale are
culminated in the big day with the
COPS program at the training com-
plex. After the kids were invited to
participate in many of the exercises
used by the firefighters and given
rides in a real fire truck. Shortly after
noon, a delicious lunch was prepared
and served to the young guests by
members of the Kitchener Knights of
Columbus.

A Grand Evening Enjoyed Wednesday, July 11, 2018
KITCHENER — At the helm of the 2018 K of C Clergy
BBQ was newly elected Grand Knight Mike Szabo who
acted as a gracious host welcoming seven of Kitche-
ner’s clergy to the annual shindig.
Displaying his culinary skills at the BBQ was master chef
Brother Brian Schmalz preparing a wide selection of sir-
loin steak and chicken breasts, while in the kitchen
Brother Brian Hughes organized all the trimmings.
Brothers Gerry Kelly and Fernando Melo meticulously
put finishing touches together on a sumptuous dessert
which followed dinner.
Attending the festivities were Fr. Jerome from St. Aloys-
ius; Deacon Neil and Fr. Larry from Blessed Sacrament;
Fathers Maskel, Brian and Tom from St. Joe’s/St.
Anne’s and Fr. Dave from St. Michael’s.
Relaxing after their meal, Deputy Grand Knight Gary
Megaffin brought inquiring minds up-to-date on the St.
Mary’s Hospital chapel restoration and fielded ques-
tions on the current state of local radio while dodging
anecdotal comments coming from the dishwasher in the
kitchen.
It was a Council 1504 evening that proved to be a big
hit with everyone.
A warm evening greeted invited clergy and members of Council 1504 as the
Kitchener Knights of Columbus held their annual clergy BBQ at K of C House.
Fr. Tom has everyone listening to one of his humorous stories as hors d’oeu-
vres are enjoyed before dinner is served.
Following Grace said by Deacon Neil from Blessed Sacrament, the invited
clergy and members of Kitchener Knights, Council 1504, sat down to a deli-
cious meal prepared for the annual K of C Clergy BBQ.
A harvest of wishes to you and those you love
for bountiful blessings and countless happy memories.

Remembering A Knight BY DGK GARY MEGAFFIN
It was a cold March day in 1960 when I left CFOS Radio in Owen
Sound on my way to a new gig at CKCR Radio (now CHYM) in
Kitchener. The first person to greet and welcome me to the station
was Don Cameron. A couple of weeks prior, Don had just returned
from the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley California report-
ing on the games for CKCR listeners. We immediately became
friends as we began our broadcasting careers.
After three months on the graveyard shift (Midnight to 6:00 am), I became the morning man while Don
was in the news department and head of sports.
In 1963 Don married Carole Stoeser and I was honoured to be his best man. That year our daughter, Don-
na Marie, was born at St. Mary’s Hospital and Don and Carole became godparents. When I left for Toronto
in 1965, Don remained at CKCR in Kitchener while auditioning for the expansion St. Louis Blues play-by-
play announcer.
Over the years we remained friends while keeping in touch and in 2003 I returned to Kitchener. I became
a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi, as was Don, and lector at the 9:00 am Sunday Mass, as also was Don.
It was our Sunday morning ritual to discuss the week’s radio news while waiting for Mass to begin.
In 1964 I had become a Third-Degree Knight in Mississauga for a short time. Returning to Kitchener, I re-
joined the Kitchener Knights in 2003. Don was an Honorary Life member of Council 1504 and was always
available to volunteer to support our charitable events. Although I left the mic in 1975, Don was a Broad-
caster for over 60 years with CKCR, CKCO TV, CKKW Radio and later 570 NEWS. Don was known as
“The Legend” and was the Kitchener Rangers play-by-play announcer since the team's inception.
It was a bittersweet day when Don died on June 7th, 2018, the day Joyce and I celebrated our 60th wedding
anniversary.
