Introduction• Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) and
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)– About 4,000 infants die each year– The leading cause of infant death each year
• Assumed Causes of SUID and SIDS– Sleeping position– Slowing of breath
• Open Source– Freely available software code
Current Technology
• Owlet, Mimo, and Monbaby
• The devices are imperfect and lead the parent into false security.
Purpose
• Open Sourcing allows:– Parents to personalize device for the child• Add on different sensors• Program alerts for unique disorders
– Opportunity for other purposes• Monitor for elderly or pets
– Anyone can help to improve the device
Design
• Elastic band evenly distributed around infant• Devices– Arduino: computing device– Accelerometer: motion for breathing– Gyroscope: orientation for sleeping position
Procedure• Connect corresponding pins of the micro sensors to the Arduino Uno board.• Accel to Arduino Uno
– GND → GND– VIN → 5V– SDA → SDA – SCL → SCL
• Gyro to Arduino Uno– GND → GND– VIN → 5V– SDA → SDA – SCL → SCL
• Piezo Buzzer should be connected to desired number pin on Arduino
• Test possible scenarios for function of buzzer alerts

Conclusion
• The device was able to monitor sensor movements through the manual movements by hand
• Buzzer went off according to programmed conditionals of X, Y and Z values set
• Improvements could be– More wearable sensors like the Flora (thinner)– The addition of WiFi connection to make it mobile
