N = number of electrons needed to achieve a noble gas configuration. N usually has a value of 8 for representative elements.
N has a value of 2 for H atoms.
A = number of electrons available in valence shells of the atoms.
S = number of electrons shared in bonds.
A-S = number of electrons in unshared or lone pairs.
Writing Lewis Formulas: More rules….
The central atom in a molecule or polyatomic ion is
determined by: The atom that requires the largest number of electrons to complete
its octet goes in the center.
C vs. N vs. O For two atoms in the same column, the less electronegative (or lowest ionization energy) element goes in the center.
C vs. Si Hydrogen never is the central atom.
52
14
Strategy for Lewis Dot Structures
1) Determine central atom
2) Calculate N (needed electrons)
3) Calculate A (available electrons)
4) Calculate S (shared electrons)
5) Put in shared electrons
6) Arrange unshared electrons.
CH4 Example: methane
N = (4H = 8 e-)+ (1C=8 e-) = 8+8 = 16
A = (4H= 4 e-) + (1C = 4 e-) = 4+4= 8
S = 16-8 = 8 (shared electrons)
A-S = 8-8 = 0 (lone electrons)
Example:
water H2O
N = (2H= 4 e- )+ (1O = 8 e- ) = 12 (needed electrons)
A = (2H = 2e- )+ (1O = 6 e- ) = 8 (available electrons)
S = N-A ; 12 - 8 = 4 (shared electrons)
A-S = 8 - 4 = 4 (lone electrons)
What is the central atom? How does one arrange the electrons?

There are three possible structures for CO32- or SO3
2-
The double bond can be placed in one of three places.
When two or more Lewis formulas are necessary to show the bonding in a molecule, we must use equivalent resonance structures to show the molecule’s structure.
Double-headed arrows are used to indicate resonance formulas.

2 structures have exactly same energy - blend together as a
resonance hybrid - electron density is spread evenly around the ring
Resonance stabilises a molecule by lowering its total energy
Resonance occurs between structures with the same arrangement of atoms, but

Using Bond Dissociation Enthalpies
E.g. Estimate the heat of formation of H2O(g) from bond dissociation energies. Thus determine:
H2(g) + ½ O2(g) H2O(g) = ? From the book (Table 9.5):
H – H (g) 2H (g) DH = D1 = 436 kJ ½ O=O O (g) DH = D2 = 494/2 = 247 kJ 2H(g) + O (g) H – O – H (g) DH = -2D3 = -2*459 kJ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- H2(g) + ½ O2(g) H2O(g) = -235 kJ Actual = -241.8 kJ
Can be determined by suming all the energies for the bonds broken and subtract from if the sum of the energies for the bonds formed.
E.g. 2 Estimate the energy change for the chlorination of ethylene:
CH2=CH2(g) + Cl2(g) CH2ClCH2Cl 94
O-H = 459 แตม 2O-H = 459x2 ตดลบคอ คายความรอน 436 + 247 - 913
94
Using Bond Dissociation Enthalpies It may be necessary to include a phase change since many reactions or
reactants are not in the gas phase.
E.g. Determine the heat of formation of CCl4(l).
Solution: The reaction is:
C(gr) + 2Cl2(g) CCl4(l) = ?
Write the reactions and sum energies:
C (gr) C (g) DH1 = 715 kJ
2Cl – Cl (g) 4Cl (g) DH2 = 486
C(g) + 4Cl(g) CCl4 (g) DH3 = -1320
CCl4 (g) CCl4 (l) DH4 = -43
C(gr) + 2Cl2 (g) CCl4 (l) DH = -162 kJ
Actual is - 139 kJ.
95 95 96
Using Bond Energies Using Bond Energies
Estimate the energy of the reaction, Hrxn=?
H—H + Cl—Cl ----> 2 H—Cl
H—H = 436 kJ/mol Cl—Cl = 242 kJ/mol H—Cl = 432 kJ/mol
Sum of H-H + Cl-Cl bond energies = 436 kJ + 242 kJ = +678 kJ
2 mol H-Cl bond energies = (432x2) = 864 kJ 2 mol H-Cl bond energies = (432x2) = 864 kJ
Net = Hrxn = +678 kJ - 864 kJ = -186 kJ Net = Hrxn = +678 kJ - 864 kJ = -186 kJ

The diagram for O2 is the general energy-level MO diagram for second-row homonuclear diatomic molecules.
The diagram assumes no interaction between the 2s and 2p atomic orbitals and can be used for O2, F2 and Ne2.
However, for Li2, Be2, B2, C2, N2 the 2s orbital on one atom and the 2p orbital on the other interact. They are closer together in energy so there is some mixing of the 2s and 2p s orbitals.
The s mixing moves the orbitals further apart: σ2s falls and σ2p rises in energy.

4. Molecular Orbital Theory
A. Assumptions (1) During bonding, atomic orbitals from DIFFERENT atoms are transformed into new orbitals with different shapes, energies, and electron density distri- butions. (2) This is brought about by the overlap- ping of atomic orbitals among different atoms.
168 168
43
(3) Molecular Orbitals are the allowed states for an electron moving in the electric field generated by two or more nuclei. The Aufbau principle, the Pauli Exclusion principle, and Hund’s Rule of Maximum Multiplicity are all used to fill Molecular Orbitals.
B. Rules
(1) The total number of molecular orbitals is the same as the number of atomic orbitals combined.
169 169
(2) Bonding molecular orbitals have lower energy than the parent atomic orbitals while antibonding orbitals have higher energy than the parent atomic orbitals.

Frequently, we will describe two geometries for each molecule.
1. Electronic geometry is determined by the locations of regions of high electron density around the central atom(s).
2. Molecular geometry determined by the arrangement of atoms around the central atom(s).
Electron pairs are not used in the molecular geometry determination just the positions of the atoms in the molecule are used.

In the next sections we will use the following terminology: A = central atom
B = bonding pairs around central atom
U = lone pairs around central atom
For example: AB3U designates that there are 3 bonding pairs and 1
lone pair around the central atom.

If lone pairs are incorporated into the trigonal bipyramidal structure, there are three possible new shapes.
1. One lone pair – distorted tetrahedral
2. Two lone pairs - T-shape
3. Three lone pairs – linear
The lone pairs occupy equatorial positions because they are 120o from two bonding pairs and 90o from the other two bonding pairs.
Results in decreased repulsions compared to lone pair in axial position.

Octahedral Electronic Geometry: AB6, AB5U, and AB4U2
250
If lone pairs are incorporated into the octahedral structure, there are two possible new shapes.
1. One lone pair - square pyramidal
2. Two lone pairs - square planar
The lone pairs occupy axial positions because they are 90o from four bonding pairs. Results in decreased repulsions compared to lone pairs in
equatorial positions.
