“If God has called man to life and resurrection, he
has called not a part, but the whole, which is the
soul and the body” -St. Justin Martyr 153 AD
Have you looked at your reflection in the mirror and
sometimes think, “what the heck happened?” That thought
often occurs when one begins to take enough medications
each day that it counts as a separate meal. Or when you set
off metal detectors all over town, not due to what you have in
your pockets, but because so many of your body parts are
now imprinted with “Made by U.S. Steel.” There may be many
reasons why we don’t particularly like our bodies, but, we
better get used to them because we are going to keep them
for all eternity!
In today’s gospel, Jesus has a conversation with a Jewish
sect known as the Sadducees. Unlike most Jews, they denied
the resurrection of the body because they only held to the first
five books of the Old Testament which does not explicitly
teach this. Jesus shows them from the second book, Exodus
3:1-6, that Moses did indeed allude to a resurrection. There,
God said to Moses that He was the God of Abraham, Isaac,
and Jacob, all who had by then been dead for many
centuries.
The resurrection of the body is central to the Christian faith.
We are not fully human without both body and soul. While our
souls will be separated from our body at death, they will be
reunited for eternity at the resurrection where God’s previous
judgement of the soul will also apply to the body. The death
and resurrection of Jesus shows us that while His body lay in
the tomb, His spirit was alive. (1 Peter 3:18-19) On the third
day His body and soul were again joined. As we read in
Scripture, although Jesus had the same body, it was also a
very different glorified body. There is great mystery here but
St. Paul tells us that our lowly bodies will be glorified in the
same way. (Philippians 3:21)
We may not be thinking of this as we gaze with alarm at our
mirror reflection, but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t. The
resurrection of the body is all about God’s love for us and our
call to trust Him. This is clearly demonstrated to us in the
remarkable story of the mother and her seven sons in the first
reading. Their hope in the resurrection and in their faith
remained steadfast as they were tortured by having their
bodies slowly cut to pieces. They were confident they would
regain it all and much more.
Jesus tells us that after the resurrection we will be like the
angels, not that we will be pure spirits like them, but that, like
them, we will no longer die nor will we marry as there will no
longer be a need to reproduce. Yet those who are married in
this life will be united even more to one another in the next life
as they will be perfectly united to Christ in the communion of
saints.
Your brother in Christ,
Ron Donatelli
A PRAYER FOR OUR VETERANS
Father, we thank you and ask for your blessings upon all
the men and women who have served our country in the
armed forces.
We ask for your healing grace for the veterans who have
been wounded, in body and soul, in conflicts around the
globe. Bring peace to their hearts and peace to the
regions in which they fought.
Bless all the soldiers who served in noncombative posts.
May their calling to serve continue in their lives in many
ways according to your will.
Lord, grant us the desire to live in a world which moves
beyond war to one which acknowledges the sacredness
of every human life.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE THIRTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
10 MANERAS DE ENCONTRAR UNA UNIÓN VERDADERA CON DIOS EN
MEDIO DEL CAOS (segunda parte)
vida espiritual y a continuar esforzándonos.
Prácticas:
1. Dar tiempo y espacio a Dios: La santidad no aparece simplemente

READING I 2 MC7:1-2, 9-14
It happened that seven brothers with their mother were arrested and tortured
with whips and scourges by the king, to force them to eat pork in violation of
God's law. One of the brothers, speaking for the others, said: "What do you
expect to achieve by questioning us? We are ready to die rather than transgress
the laws of our ancestors."
At the point of death he said: "You accursed fiend, you are depriving us of this
present life, but the King of the world will raise us up to live again forever.
It is for his laws that we are dying."
After him the third suffered their cruel sport. He put out his tongue at once when
told to do so, and bravely held out his hands, as he spoke these noble words:
"It was from Heaven that I received these; for the sake of his laws I disdain them;
from him I hope to receive them again." Even the king and his attendants
marveled at the young man's courage, because he regarded his sufferings as
nothing.
After he had died, they tortured and maltreated the fourth brother in the same
way. When he was near death, he said, "It is my choice to die at the hands of
men with the hope God gives of being raised up by him; but for you, there will be
no resurrection to life."
RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 17:1, 5-6, 8, 15
R. Lord, when your glory appears, my joy will be full.
Hear, O LORD, a just suit; attend to my outcry; hearken to my prayer from lips
without deceit.
R. Lord, when your glory appears, my joy will be full.
My steps have been steadfast in your paths, my feet have not faltered.
I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my
word.
R. Lord, when your glory appears, my joy will be full.
Keep me as the apple of your eye, hide me in the shadow of your wings.
But I in justice shall behold your face; on waking I shall be content in your
presence.
R. Lord, when your glory appears, my joy will be full.
READING 2 2 THES 2:16—3:5
Brothers and sisters: May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father,
who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope
through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good
deed and word.
Finally, brothers and sisters, pray for us, so that the word of the Lord may speed
forward and be glorified, as it did among you, and that we may be delivered from
perverse and wicked people, for not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful; he will
strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. We are confident of you in the
Lord that what we instruct you, you are doing and will continue to do. May the
Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the endurance of Christ.
R. Alleluia, alleluia. RV 1:5A, 6B
Jesus Christ is the firstborn of the dead; to him be glory and power, forever and
ever.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL LK 20:27, 34-38
Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, came
forward and put this question to Jesus, saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote
for us, If someone's brother dies leaving a wife but no child, his brother
must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother.
Now there were seven brothers; the first married a woman but died
childless. Then the second and the third married her, and likewise all the
seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. Now at the
resurrection whose wife will that woman be? For all seven had been
married to her." Jesus said to them, "The children of this age marry and
remarry; but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age
and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in
marriage. They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are
the children of God because they are the ones who will rise. That the
dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush,
when he called out 'Lord, 'the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and
the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to
him all are alive."

MINISTRY AT OPV CATHOLIC
LOW GLUTEN HOSTS
Occasionally, with those who have tried to
receive low gluten hosts at our Masses,
there has been some confusion which pyx is
used to distribute. We have found a pyx that
is labeled “Low Gluten” and with a red cover
that will now be used at each church in our
grouping. The pyx should be stored in the
mini-fridge in each sacristy where the low gluten hosts are
stored when not in use at Mass. If you go to the fridge to get the
pyx and it is missing, then it is likely already out for someone
else who is receiving LG-Hosts.
We welcome any Catholic at any of the OPV churches who is
gluten intolerant to receive special hosts at Mass. Anyone
wanting to receive a low gluten host (very low gluten) is welcome
to learn how to receive in each church by contacting the priest or
sacristan. He/she would simply find their hosts in the sacristy
before Mass in the mini-refrigerator and place in a pyx and set
on the tray or the altar so that they are consecrated by the priest
during Mass. The priest or another minister who stands where
the priest usually stands will then distribute them when coming
forward for Holy Communion.
BAPTISM MINISTRY IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS
The OPV Catholic Baptism Ministry is looking for new
volunteers to assist in a variety of areas. We are seeking volunteers at
each parish to serve as Baptism Hosts. A Baptism Host attends a
baptism and assists in greeting the family attending, as well as assists
the priest or deacon in gathering materials. Baptisms typically always
follow the latest Sunday morning Mass at each parish and only last
about thirty minutes. With enough volunteers, you would only have to
serve every other month and only if there is a scheduled baptism.
Being a Baptism Host can be just one person or as a family.
If you would like to volunteer and you are crafty, the Blanket Ministry is
seeking volunteers to help create beautiful blankets that are given out
at each baptism in each parish within our grouping. The blankets can
be knit or crocheted and patterns can be provided, or you are welcome
to create your own. The group does occasionally meet for crafting and
for fellowship with one another; however, you are also welcome to just
make them at home and drop off. The Blanket Ministry is always
willing to take donations of white yarn to make these beautiful
keepsakes.
If you have any questions or if you would be interested in
volunteering as a Baptism Host or if you would like to volunteer with our
Blanket Ministry, please contact Steph Williams by calling the Religious
Education Office or email reled@opvcatholic.org.
OPV Parish Share NEEDS your Support!
This chart shows the amount of
Parish Share that each of the
parishes in our grouping have been tasked with and
how much remains to be collected and submitted. Each
church is still responsible for fulfilling our 2019
Diocesan assessments. It is to our best advantage as
separate parishes AND as a grouping to collect the full
amount of Parish Share, and even more for various
projects we need to have completed in our grouping.
Note: ALL contributions received in excess of the
assessment STAYS at our local church for unrestricted
use and will NOT be assessed in 2020. This would be
very beneficial to each of our church budgets this
year. We collect 2019 Parish Share donations until
February 2020. However, please maximize your
year-end tax contributions now. If you have not
contributed this year, please re-consider a “one-time
pledge” or take advantage of the weekly breakout on
your Offertory Envelopes. Thanks to those who have
already generously supported us. Please help us wipe
out this debt and move together financially stronger as
we journey On-Mission towards our new parish.

33 Days to Morning Glory is a Catholic do-it-yourself retreat that has
become popular in the last few years. It is a Consecration to Jesus
through Mary. Several individuals and prayer groups have taken the
opportunity to go through this retreat over 33 days. The book to guide
your retreat has been given to us by the author Father Michael Gaitley
and the Marian Missionaries of Divine Mercy. Copies are available in
English at each of our five churches and in Spanish at St. John the
Baptist and Our Lady of Joy, on the entrance tables. For those who have
purchased the book previously, note that the copy on the tables is the
same content, but printed in magazine format which reduces the cost of
printing.
Parishioners wanting to join a study group can complete the form below,
and return in the collection or to a parish office and we will try to match
up others interested in the same area. Individuals and groups can begin
anytime they would like; though Advent is a great time to end, preferably
on one of the Marian feast days.
The simple chart listed to the right
shows when one would begin so as
to end 33 days later on the Marian
feast. It would be great if we could
share that our five parishes have
consecrated themselves to Jesus
through Mary over the next year as

FUNERAL CROSS
As we continue the journey to becoming
one parish often some of our individual
traditions change as new ones are
evolving. For many years at 0LOJ there
was the tradition of receiving a cross

As of October 5, 2019 this tradition will

new ways to celebrate the lives of those

IN OUR GROUPING AND AROUND THE DIOCESE...
MEET THE STAFF
Tina Bucci
Vice Principal / PreSchool Director,
St. Joseph Catholic School

Mrs. Tina Bucci, who is currently serving as
Vice-Principal and PreSchool Director at St.
Joseph School in Verona, lives in Apollo with
her husband of 30 years and their two sons, Dominic (21) and
Michael (13). Mrs. Bucci has become very familiar with St. Joseph
School families during her role as 2018-19 school principal, which
she thoroughly enjoyed.
Tina attended Catholic School during her elementary years. She
has been a Faith Formation teacher for grades K-5, a Vacation
Bible School preschool teacher, and a Youth Group Core Team
member for her home parish at St. James in Apollo.
Tina’s background in educational administration, counseling,
psychology, and elementary/early childhood education has
provided her with a unique blend of knowledge and experiences
with adults and children of all ages. She received her Bachelor’s
Degree in Psychology and Education from Seton Hill University in
Greensburg, and then moved to New Jersey where her husband
was stationed while in the Army. During the next several years,
Tina and her family lived in Virginia, North Carolina, and
Kentucky… so you may hear a “southern accent” occasionally.
Approximately ten years ago, Tina and her family returned to her
hometown of Apollo. Tina’s teaching experiences over the years
include private, public, and cyber school settings in Pennsylvania,
North Carolina, Virginia, and New Jersey. Tina received her
Master’s Degree in Counseling from Radford University (VA), and
she received her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration
from Scranton University.
Tina spends her “spare” time volunteering and transporting her
younger son to his band and TaeKwonDo practices and events.
She also enjoys listening to music and reading novels.
Mrs. Bucci is grateful to be a part of the St. Joseph School
community. She loves working with the students at SJV and being
involved in their educational development.
