The story of a broiler hen

Newly hatched and scooped out within minutes

The journey begins...

On the conveyor belt and

then dropped

onto another!

Through the metal box and into a crate!

A quick shower?

Loads of space to grow up in! To get BIGGER in!

Broiler hens are ‘special’ because they’re modified to grow fat, quickly! Why? To meet the growing need for meat!

This photo shows you the side-effect of growing so fast. Their legs aren’t strong enough for their overgrown bodies!

As they get bigger there’s even less space for them!

Here’s an image to show you the difference between a 14 day old laying chick and a meat/broiler chick!

Here’s an image to show you the difference between a 7 week old laying chick and a meat/broiler chick!

Then the ‘catchers’ get to work - grabbing the hens and ramming them into the crates, which causes huge injuries!

And then they’re off the slaughter house for an unimaginable experience of pain and disregard.

This is where they’re hung upside down and stunned. Machines do this, so the hens aren’t always unconscious!

The next part involves a machine cutting off their head, which may not be as accurate as it needs to be! So, the hen is alive when it’s put through scalding water, which is a way to make

feather removal quicker!
