Letter from the Pastor
When you read through the following pages, you have to be amazed at the number of activities and the involvement of the laity in so many parish programs Blessed Sacrament provides to its community. It is one of the hallmarks of our parish that so many parishioners not only come to Mass on Sunday, but make an effort to be involved in one, two or more activities throughout the year, helping to build the community and making sure that those who come to the church or are visited by our parishioners are well served by the Blessed Sacrament family.
Thank you for reading through the following pages. If you are not involved in any parish activities, now is the time to volunteer. If you would like to receive more information about any of the programs listed in this booklet, we can provide that to you as well.

Our Parish Structure
Parish Leadership Nights
On the first Tuesday of each month (September through June), five “commissions” (Administration, Community Life, Faith Formation, Outreach, and Worship) gather from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in the school auditorium, along with the members of the Pastoral Council. These commissions give direction to each aspect of parish life: worship, community life, faith formation, outreach, and administration.
Our mission, as the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, is to be an inviting and welcoming community seeking to know, love, and serve God through our ministries of Worship, Stewardship, Spiritual Growth, Social

Each Commission is meant to be a linking, visioning group, rather than the “doer” or implementer of projects and programs. The Commission’s role is to tie all the ministries and groups together, providing a unified vision, creating a common direction for improved communication.
The major work of the Commission is to set goals and map out action plans throughout the year. After identifying what needs to be accomplished, the Commission identifies what ministry or other group would be the appropriate one to implement activities to achieve the goals. A timeline and evaluation process are essential to effective delegation.
The co‐chairs and staff resource person create the agenda for Commission meetings and communicate the agenda to the members. During the month, each person on the Commission has one or more groups in that area of ministry to contact in order to check progress and identify concerns or issues appropriate for Commission consideration. Commission members identify people who should be considered for Commission participation.
The Pastoral Council is the glue that holds the Commission structure together. This is the body that makes certain that there is a clear mission and sense of purpose for the Parish Leadership. Part of the Pastoral Council’s role is to make certain all the Commissions are functioning well, have a good sense of their duties and responsibilities and are operating only within their prescribed area.
The Council’s agenda will vary depending on the time of the year, but generally will include such things as: developing a common theme for the year; assisting the Finance Council with budget priorities; developing and evaluating action plans; identifying and recruiting leadership people.

Administration ____________________________________________________________________________________________
The Administration Commission is responsible for coordinating the temporal affairs of the parish : how money is acquired, how it is spent, how the physical plant is maintained and how the parishioners are kept informed about what is happening in the parish. Each of these areas is handled by a subcommittee. The Administration Commission coordinates the following subcommittees : Finance Council, Buildings and Grounds Committee, Communication Team, Stewardship Committee, Smyth Endowment Fund, Fundraisers, Faith Direct, and Master Calendar.

Buildings and Facilities Committee Members advise the business manager and assist in the planning and managing of maintenance and improvements of buildings and grounds. Members attend bi‐monthly committee meetings, two shape‐up days and one shape‐up evening per year. The committee especially encourages architects, engineers, members of a building trade (carpenter, plumber, electrician, painter, etc.) to join them. Contact: Marty Lagoy, 202‐449‐4610 mlagoy@blessedsacramentdc.org The Chimes Committee The Chimes Committee is a group of volunteers who maintain the system that causes the chimes to regularly ring throughout the day from the church tower. This system, manufactured by the Deagan Company and installed in 1935, is one of only a small number left in North America, giving volunteers an opportunity to work on technology from another time, a task requiring patience, creativity, and “out‐of‐the‐box” thinking as parts and documentation are no longer readily available. One should be comfortable climbing ladders and working at heights. Knowledge of electro‐mechanical systems is helpful, but not necessary. CommunityLife ____________________________________________________________________________________________ The Community Life Commission is made up of various organizations in the parish. Its goal is to build a deeper sense of Christian community for all age and interest groups in the parish. The scope of the commission includes the Hospitality Committee, Newcomers Welcoming Social Events, Community Groups, and Volunteer Committee.

Athletic Program This program, scheduled from August through May, involves elementary and high school youth in basketball, football, soccer, track and cross country.

Boy Scouts Blessed Sacrament has sponsored Troop 90 for more than 85 years. Scouting seeks to instill a spirit of service to others, to have fun and adventure, to learn things such as first aid and survival skills, to develop leadership skills, and to introduce boys to the idea of learning

Cub Scouts The purpose of this group is to prepare younger boys (age 7 ‐ 10) for Scouting and to offer an atmosphere of fun and learning in a supervised setting.
Contact: Barnaby Crahan, 301‐657‐2888 sarah.crahan@verizon.net Faith in the Marketplace Faith in the Market Place (FIM) is a Blessed Sacrament program that provides First Friday of the month for the 6:30 a.m. Mass followed by fellowship, coffee and muffins and a 25‐30 minute discussion and Q&A normally led by a member of the community regarding how their faith helps them in their daily work and life. FIM looks for opportunities to assist others in the community in various ways such as getting to Sunday Mass, supporting children with special needs and other needs where our resources can be of assistance. The group meets on the first Friday of every month, September through June, and to connect with others who share a common bond in learning from others about their walk with faith. Filipino Community Committee This group communicates information about events at Blessed Sacrament, which include liturgical and social events, within the Filipino community. In addition, volunteers care for toddlers and children up to four years of age in the nursery during the 10:15 a.m. Sunday
Masses. A variety of opportunities are available to parishioners who would like to get involved. We welcome and encourage your participation.

Girl Scouts Girls interested in making new friends, serving others and trying new things – from nature and camping, to arts and crafts, to making brown‐bag lunches for the homeless – are invited to join the Blessed Sacrament Girl Scout program. Scouting builds confidence, leadership and self‐esteem by encouraging girls to learn to do things for themselves and to master new

Ministry of Mothers Sharing (MOMS) The Ministry of Mothers Sharing (MOMS) is an outreach ministry of the Sisters of St. Benedict. Our objectives are: 1) to gather mothers together to form a network of mutual, spiritual support, 2) to provide a group experience of learning, praying and ministering to
each other 3) to introduce mothers to opportunities for personal and spiritual growth in a faith sharing group, and 4) to increase communication skills and the use of prayer rituals in the home. Mothers interested in joining our ministry are encouraged to complete our eight‐week encounter, using the book: MOMS: A Personal Journal. Each weekly session begins and ends with a prayer ritual designed to enhance the Christian perspective on each of these topics. self‐esteem and self‐acceptance, stress, worries and anxiety, everyday spirituality, feelings, personal goal setting, expressing values in friendship, discernment of gifts, celebration of new beginnings. After completing the program, the MOMS community gathers for various volunteer programs, events and family socials throughout the year. Mother’s Renew Group Join other parish mothers to prepare for Lent and Advent. Moms meet in the Duffy Parish Center on Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for six Thursdays preceding Easter and Christmas (excluding Thanksgiving and school vacations). Babysitting is
provided on site, with advanced notice. Volunteer mothers lead discussions of the upcoming Sunday gospel readings as we pray, share, and learn from each other. Contact: Maria Olsen, 301‐652‐4370 mariaolsen@verizon.net Prayer Group The Blessed Sacrament Prayer Group has changed its format in the last year. We have become a Cenacle in membership with the Marian Movement of Priests. We begin our meeting with a prayer and then say the rosary, following the Marian format and meditations. We continue to be an intercessory group and after the rosary we pray for the world, the nation, families, and any needs of the Body of Christ. All are welcome to join us or call with prayer needs. Ray Manning Adult Center The Ray Manning Adult Center is a social gathering place for senior adults and offers an open house with desserts, snacks, beverages and conversation each day (Monday through Thursday) following the 11 a.m. Mass. The open house/social is usually followed by the activity of the day: guest lecturer, travelogue, movie, book review, blood pressure screening,
Scripture study, low vision support group, bridge, art lessons, sitting down exercises. The Center is located in beautifully furnished Apartment #1 of the historic Chevy Chase Apartment Bldg., adjacent to the church. All senior adults, 50 and older, are invited and no fees are charged. Transportation is provided for those who need it. Check the Sunday bulletin for the week's activities. The Center needs the following volunteers: a. Drivers to transport seniors (all are ambulatory) to the Center. Time involved is 20‐30 minutes,
weekdays 10:30‐11:00 am for pick‐up or 2:00‐3:00 p.m. for the return trip
b. Bakers to provide homemade cake, cookies, or brownies. c. Host/Hostess to set up, participate in activity, and clean up. Three to four hours, once or twice/per
month

RENEW and the Word Each Tuesday a group gathers to read, reflect on and discuss the scripture readings for the upcoming Sunday liturgy and their application/relevance in our daily lives. Second & Fourth Monday Club The Second and Fourth Monday Club is a group of Blessed Sacrament seniors who meet twice a month for various activities. Events are scheduled to meet social, spiritual and educational interests and include parties, guest speakers and occasional day trips. Meetings
are held on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month in the Ray Manning Adult Center after the 11 a.m. Mass. Transportation is provided for those who need it. Volunteers are needed to plan events, schedule speakers, and/or coordinate day trips. Drivers also needed for day trips. Contact: Rita Killian, 202‐363‐5069 r.killian@verizon.net
Welcoming Committee for New Parishioners The Welcoming Committee for New Parishioners enthusiastically welcomes new volunteers for this ministry. Our goal is to greet new parishioners when they register in the parish, by assigning volunteers who are similar in interests and age group, from their 20’s through
early 80’s! Our mission is to meet personally with each newcomer, give them information on parish life, and seek ways to help them identify programs and activities which interest them. The requirements are a willingness to assist new parishioners with our welcoming goals, and a commitment to fulfill visiting assignments on a timely basis. Faith Formation ____________________________________________________________________________________________
The Formation Commission coordinates all levels of educational programming in the parish, Catholic, and public school children through adults. The Commission’s role is to foster cooperation, coordination, and communication among all groups and individuals involved in the education formation ministries of the parish. The Formation Commission coordinates the following committees and groups: Whole Community Catechesis, Adult Formation, Youth Ministry, Child/Family Formation, and Catholic School.

Advent Wreath Workshop The Advent Wreath Workshop meets once a year on the first Sunday of Advent. Families use the wreaths they create at this workshop in their homes to spiritually prepare themselves for Jesus’ birth at Christmas. Volunteers publicize the workshop and set up/
clean up on the day of the workshop. The Catholic Letters and the Book of Revelation 2011 During the month of January we will study the Johannine Letters. The New Testament attributes three letters to someone named John. The identity of this writer remains a mystery. The three letters are not familiar to most Catholics but they are a wealth of
information regarding life in the early Christian communities. February through the middle of May we will be studying the Book of Revelation sometimes called the Apocalypse. Most Catholics have little knowledge even of the existence of this work and if they do they tend to misunderstand it completely. It is easy to misunderstand it because of its highly symbolic and coded language. Centennial Family Pilgrimage The Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament School of Religion’s annual pilgrimage is a special time for the SOR students and their families to visit a local or regional Catholic holy place, including shrines, St. Matthew’s Cathederal, monasteries or cultural centers. The pilgrimage facilitates building community and is an opportunity for all participants to deepen their appreciation for our Catholic faith as well as increase awareness of the holy places that are right in our midst. For the centennial year, invitations to the 2011 pilgrimage are being extended to all Blessed Sacrament families. It is scheduled for March 27, 2011 and will include Mass, quiet reflection and prayer, a tour and lunch. Time permitting and if clergy are available, confessions may be offered as well. Our true self emerges and simple acts of service to the community that flow from our basic core of goodness bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit. We learn to be attentive to the present moment: the moment of God’s presence. In silence, centering prayer becomes a universal prayer for the whole human family. Infant Baptism Preparation Program The infant baptism program at Blessed Sacrament has two main goals: 1) Help parents prepare for a meaningful celebration of the sacrament; and 2) Assist parents in an examination of their own faith and prepare them for the task of raising their own children
in the Catholic faith. The program consists of two sessions (which do not have to be attended in any particular order) 1) Meeting led by a priest or deacon – deals with the meaning of baptism, the Rite of Baptism, and the symbols in the rite, and 2) Meeting led by parents – deals with the faith journey of the parents, the rituals and traditions of the Catholic faith, and the responsibility and joy of being the first teachers of the children in matters of faith. The Wisdom Books intellectual reflection about life’s problems; they are a quest for universal truth, the rule of life and the nature of created reality. Wisdom is often described as a person accompanying God in God’s act of creation; Wisdom is often personified as a woman in some of the Wisdom literature. Wisdom literature encourages the Wise person to question life, while at the same time analyzing and ordering common experience into rules to live by. Wisdom encourages discipline of thinking, careful reasoning and the control of the passions. It has been active in the United States since 1931, has been approved by the last six Popes, and was endorsed by the Second Vatican Council. The main purpose of the Legion of Mary is to give glory to God through the sanctification of its members. Centennial Lenten Parish Mission A parish Mission is a time of prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal for all parishioners and takes place over a period of four evenings, Monday through Wednesday (come to any or preferably all of them). This year, Fr. Kevin Nadolski and Fr. Jim Greenfield will lead our Parish Mission as we reflect on our relationship with God and others this Lent. The Parish Mission will begin at all the weekend Masses Saturday evening, March 12 and Sunday, March 13, 2011. Your library provides books, magazines, films, and CDs for the parish community. There’s an emphasis on great literature that specifically addresses Catholic interests. All parishioners are welcome to use the library and to borrow its contents. Also, library staff answer informational questions and can search the internet for you. Groups are welcome to meet in the library and make use of its resources. The collection amounts to over 6,000 books, tapes, CDs, videos and DVDs. Subjects include fiction, biography, art, scripture, social justice and spirituality, as well as books for very young children. The goal is to reflect your interests and your suggestions for new books and CDs are welcome. If you would like to become a library volunteer, possibilities include: cataloguing and preparing new items for the shelves, helping parishioners find books, planning special events such as speakers and author signings. The emphasis of Encounter is on private communication between husband and wife as they spend a weekend together away from tensions of everyday life, experiencing presentations given by a team of couples and a priest. This is not a retreat, a marriage clinic or group sensitivity training; it is a unique approach aimed at revitalizing marriage. Men’s Retreat Weekend The retreat weekend, scheduled for March 4‐6, 2011 is open to all men ages 10 and up. Fathers can spend quality time with sons. The retreat begins on Friday with an orientation at 6:45 p.m. (Mass at 6:00 p.m.) and crab cake dinner (recipe for which has appeared in Washington Post) at 7:00 p.m. and concludes with lunch on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The retreats are conducted in an atmosphere of silence. This 50‐year parish tradition is led by the Jesuits at Loyola Retreat House in southern Maryland 35 miles southeast of the beltway on a cliff with a majestic view of a 16‐mile wide expanse of the Potomac River (spectacular sunsets!). Fr. John has joined us practically every year which says a lot about what he thinks about this retreat given how busy his schedule is on weekends. Marriage Preparation Engaged couples who are planning to be married at Blessed Sacrament are required to participate in four marriage preparation sessions that are conducted by a parish priest and by married couples from the parish. Married couples that participate in the marriage
preparation sessions share their own marriage journey with the engaged couples. Volunteer couples must be able to impart the Church’s teaching on life, marriage, and the sacraments. Engaged couples meet with a priest first and then are referred for the Marriage Preparation program. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Would you like to learn more about the Catholic Faith? Wednesday Morning Bible Study Bread, Book and Brethren is a scripture study group of about 60 men and women of all ages and backgrounds. The group meets in the Duffy Parish Center on Wednesday mornings following the 8:00 a.m. Mass for a light breakfast. Using Collegeville Commentaries and Little Rock study guides we read scripture, ask questions, share insights and relate divine revelation to our daily lives. Scripture scholars visit weekly for talks which broaden our vision. In September we will begin our year long study of John's gospel. The group is open to all and welcomes newcomers throughout the year. Members of the group facilitate small group discussions, organize pot‐luck luncheons, arrange for weekly guest speakers, offer the opening prayer, plan and coordinate the annual day of recollection at the Washington Retreat House and provide care and concern for members with particular needs. Greg Gannon Canned Food Drive More than two decades the ago the Canned Food Drive was started by Greg Gannon and his wife Maureen. This popular Blessed Sacrament Parish and School tradition takes place on the first Saturday in December when over 600 adults and children collect an estimated
55,000 cans of food for the needy. This is a great family activity! The day begins with instruction and a blessing in the Church and ends with lunch and time for fellowship in the school cafeteria. The committee is looking for individuals and families to continue the tradition that directly supports local food banks. Just Faith This program is both a formation process and spiritual journey. Groups meet weekly to employ books, videos, speakers, discussion, prayer, retreats and experiences in justice education. This is an excellent faith formation program for those hungering for a deeper

Landings Landings is an eight‐week discussion series that provides a safe “landing” place for returning/inactive Catholics. A small group of active Catholics, often “returnees” themselves, join with returning Catholics to share and explore their Catholic faith together.

Mount Carmel House Mount Carmel is a small shelter run by Catholic Charities for women in transition and on designated evenings it serves as a soup kitchen, serving dinner to 30 to 40 homeless women. Blessed Sacrament volunteers prepare (rececipes provided) and serve dinner

Operation Rice Bowl Catholic Relief Service’s Operation Rice Bowl makes a concrete difference in the lives of those living in poverty. During the Lenten season Blessed Sacrament joins millions of Catholics by reaching out to assist our brothers and sisters around the world. More than
just a fund raiser, Operation Rice Bowl is an “awareness raiser” utilizing traditional Lenten practices of prayers, fasting, and giving in solidarity with the poor. Outreach Sunday Weekend
On the first Sunday of each month, outside of church entrances, volunteers collect donations to support Blessed Sacrament Soup Kitchen which serves meals to homeless individuals and
marginalized families. Parish MiniWalk for the Homeless The Fannie Mae “Help for the Homeless MINI Walkathon” (note: Blessed Sacrament School holds a separate mini‐walk) is held each fall. Title Giving Project Yearly, Blessed Sacrament allocates gross revenues to selected charities. In the spring, the parish solicits proposals from community groups. Proposals must be sponsored by a

Twinning Program Inspired by the late Pope Paul II, repeated call to parishes in the “developed world” to adopt or “twin” with parishes in “developing countries” Blessed Sacrament and Sister Parish, St.
John the Baptist in Haiti established a “Twinning Program to build a maternity clinic serving several communities in Northwest Haiti. The land has been dedicated and architectural plans completed. The Worship Commission gives direction to the liturgical life of the parish, as well as fosters and promotes the spiritual growth of all parishioners, enabling them to understand what it means to be a baptized Catholic Christian. The Worship Commission also seeks to provide opportunities for personal and communal prayer in addition to the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. This commission coordinates the following committees and groups: The Liturgical Planning Committee that plans the weekend Masses for the various seasons, all the liturgical ministries, prayer services outside of Mass, periodic retreats and the annual Parish
Mission during Lent.

Altar Servers Servers assist the liturgical ministers during Mass by handling the Sacramentary, altar vessels and linens,

Art & Environment Committee This committee comprises a group of parishioners who plan and decorate the church and gym for all liturgical seasons and feasts. We are a collection of men and women who are handy with vacuums and brooms, hammers and electric drills, needles and thread, floral wire and staples, steamers and table saws, etc. We are strictly behind the scenes people and have a great time while readying the church for the sacred liturgy. No talent is too small or too obscure. We work in close collaboration with the Sodality, which is responsible for the provision and maintenance of the sacred vessels and vestments, as well as

Children's Liturgy of the Word (during the Gym Mass) Got kids? Going to the Gym Mass anyway, even once or twice a month? Help make the Liturgy of the Word more meaningful for young children, ages four through third grade. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word meets approximately twice a month over the school year, during the 10:15 Gym Mass. Children are
guided out of Mass to experience a child‐friendly Liturgy, which includes modified versions of the Sunday readings and Gospel, a homily discussion and/or activity surrounding the week’s theme, and a modified version of the Creed. All volunteers are asked to: 1) attend one 60‐minute information/training session (TBD) in the beginning of the year,
2) arrive 30 minutes before Mass on the scheduled dates for set‐up and planning (9:45 a.m.), and
3) spend approximately 20‐60 minutes at home to prepare for the week's Gospel and homily activity
(length of time depends upon weekly responsibilities). We need your support to continue providing this opportunity for our families! With a larger team, it will be possible to limit the number of times per month that any one volunteer is required to lead the Liturgy, therefore accommodating busy and inconsistent schedules. There are approximately 20 Liturgies per year, and each week requires a team of three to four parishioners to make it a success. Please get

Feast of All Souls, November 2, 2011
Every year on the feast of All Souls we have a special Mass to remember those parishioners who have died in the last year. The music for this Mass is taken from Gabriel Faure’s Requiem, and is performed with choir and orchestra. This year the special Mass will take place in the church on November 2 at 7 pm. with a reception to follow in the Duffy Parish Center.

Gym Mass Committee This group organizes the worship at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass in the school gymnasium and encourages the congregation’s participation in order to enhance the sense of
worship. The Gym Mass Committee volunteers help with many activities such as:
Arranging a host family to greet the worshipers, assist with the collection, collect weekly food donations, and carry gifts to the priest.
Organizing Hospitality Sunday, held once a month in the school auditorium after the 10:30 am Sunday Mass. At this event, parishioners share coffee and donuts provided by Gym Mass Committee volunteers.
Organizing the children’s liturgy 3‐4 times a month. At this activity the message of the Gospels is presented to the children in a manner that encourages their understanding (for children ages 2 – 10).
Organizing and scheduling ushers to help seat parishioners and support the duties of the host family.
Organizing the Committee’s largest charity endeavor, the annual Christmas Giving Tree. This event requires a large number of volunteers to help provide Christmas gifts to the needy in the Washington area.

Ministry of the Word (Lectors)
Lectors serve the parish community by proclaiming the readings at weekday and Sunday Masses. The lector schedule is prepared quarterly, and most Sunday lectors read two or three times per calendar quarter. Weekday lectures typically read once a week or twice a month although weekday schedules vary. Training for new volunteers is required, and is typically scheduled once a year. Teens are most welcome to volunteer, beginning in eighth grade.

Ushers arrive 15 minutes before a weekend Mass, greet people, assist with the offertory collection and procession, distribute material and maintain order. The Sanctuary Sodality is comprised of women dedicated to doing good works both inside and outside our parish in devotion to our Blessed Mother. There are 12 active units that meet monthly as the General Sodality on the first Thursday of each month, October through May. Individual units meet monthly at their convenience. New units are formed yearly. Each unit partakes in their own volunteer program along with working and contributing to the Annual Sodality Bazaar (taking place in November) that raises funds for parish projects and Sodality chosen community charities. Each unit is also responsible for preparing the sanctuary for weekend liturgies two months a year. A procession of the Blessed Sacrament through our neighborhood will follow this Mass and serve as witness of our belief in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Sacrament of Reconciliation
Five Steps for a Good Confession:
1. Examine your conscience.
2. Be sincerely sorry for your sins.
3. Confess your sins.
4. Resolve to amend your life. 5. After your confession, do the penance the priest assigns. Examination of Conscience (based on the 10 Commandments):

1. I am the Lord your God. You shall not have strange gods before me.
• Do I give God time every day in prayer?
• Do I seek to love Him with my whole heart?
• Have I been involved with superstitious practices or have I been involved with the occult?
• Do I seek to surrender myself to God's Word as taught by the Church?
• Have I ever received the Eucharist in a state of mortal sin?
• Have I ever deliberately told a lie in confession or have I withheld a mortal sin from the priest in confession?
2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
• Have I used God's name in vain: lightly or carelessly?
• Have I been angry with God?
• Have I wished evil upon another person?
• Have I insulted a sacred person or abused a sacred object?
3. Remember to keep holy the Lord's Day.
• Have I deliberately missed Mass on Sundays or Holy Days of Obligation?
• Have I tried to observe Sunday as a family day and a day of rest?
• Do I do needless work on Sunday?
4. Honor your father and your mother.
• Do I honor and obey my parents?
• Have I neglected my duties to my spouse and children?
• Have I given my family good religious example?
• Do I try to bring peace into my home life?
• Do I care for my aged and infirm relatives?

5. You shall not kill.
• Have I had an abortion or encouraged anyone to have an abortion?
• Have I physically harmed anyone?
• Have I abused alcohol or drugs?
• Did I give scandal to anyone, thereby leading them into sin?
• Have I been angry or resentful?
• Have I harbored hatred in my heart?
6. You shall not commit adultery.
• Have I been faithful to my marriage vows in thought and action?
• Have I engaged in any sexual activity outside of marriage?
• Have I been impure with myself?
• Have I sought to control my thoughts?
• Have I been open to the gift of children in my marriage?
• Have I used pornography or regarded other people as objects of pleasure?
• Have I respected sex as an act between a man and woman, reserved only in the context of married love?
• Do I seek to be chaste in my thoughts, words and actions?
• Am I careful to dress modestly?
7. You shall not steal.
• Have I stolen what is not mine?
• Have I returned or made restitution for what I have stolen?
• Do I give an honest day’s work in exchange for a honest day’s pay?
• Do I gamble excessively, thereby denying my family of their needs?
• Do I pay my debts promptly?
• Do I seek to share what I have with the poor?
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
• Have I lied?

• Have I gossiped?
• Have I unnecessarily exposed the faults of others at the expense of their reputation?
• Have I spoken behind someone else's back?
• Am I sincere in my dealings with others?
• Am I critical, negative or uncharitable in my thoughts of others?
• Do I keep secret what should be kept confidential?
9. You shall not desire your neighbor's wife.
• Have I consented to impure or lustful thoughts?
• Have I caused them by impure reading, movies, inappropriate websites, conversations or curiosity?
• Do I seek to control my imagination when tempted?
10. You shall not desire your neighbor's goods.
• Am I jealous of what other people have?
• Do I envy the families or possessions of others?
• Am I greedy or selfish? Are material possessions the purpose of my life?
How to Confess Your Sins:
Depending on the type of confessional, you may kneel at the screen or sit to talk face‐to‐face with the priest.
1. Begin your confession with the sign of the cross, "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. My last confession was _________ (weeks, months, years) ago."
2. Based on the examination of conscience, confess your sins to the priest. After confessing all the sins you remember since your last good confession, conclude by saying, "I am sorry for these and all the sins of my past life."
3. Listen to the words of advice from the priest, and he will assign you some penance. 4. The priest will now invite to say the Act of Contrition:

An Act of Contrition
O my God, I am heartily for having offended You. I detest all of my sins because of Your just punishments, but most of all, because they offend You, my God, who is all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin. Amen.
5. Listen to the words of absolution, and receive the sacramental forgiveness of the Christ through the priest.
6. The priest may close by saying, "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good," to which you may answer, "For His mercy endures forever."
7. After you leave the confessional, thank God for the great gift of His mercy and do your penance as soon as possible, so you won’t forget.
