My fellow anglers and friends,

First of a very happy new year to all of you. May this year the 2014 be the year where more of your dreamscome true. Determination, hardwork, and a bit of luckis what makes them come true.

In this issue we see the start of more vibrant designs within the magazine. We also brought together two of fishing most biggest brands in from Japan (Shi-mano & Daiwa), and we put them to fight each other. Interesting and loads of fun coming mainly from hardcore supporters of both sides.

2013 has been a year of change for some of fishing’s biggest brands and it is in 2014 that we will see and experience these changes. There will be new technologies, new exciting products, more after market product involvements, and much more. This makes 2014 a very exciting year.

We have been in search for product field testers over the last one month and we have received a lot of applications. Should you have friends whom you feel would like to be field testers, do let them know too. Worry not what level an angler they feel they are. Our aim is to cover all states in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei.

When I mention the brand VFOX, what comes to mind? Perhaps fishing tackle protection products, maybe accessories, how about rods? Little is known about VFOX rods and since being impressed by their tackle protection products, I decided to have a go at their rods.

The VFOX rod that I got to play with is the T.Blade Accurate Spin Pro of which incorpo-rates Japanese bass rods styling into its de-sign. So what you get is a modern designed rod with bling of which should capture the eyes of younger advanced anglers.

The T.Blade Accurate Spin Pro is a sporty rod that wants to race. It fea-tures two patterns of carbon fibre wraps; a narrow carbon fibre type and a thicker red carbon fibre wrap. Metal rings in purple and light “gold-ish” silver add to the effect. The yellow blade stripe completes the character.

The raciness I feel is more NAS-CAR and less exotic or more American muscle and not Italian mystique. Whatever said, it is still a good looking rod.

The handle system on the T.Blade Accurate Spin Pro is a mixture of EVA and Rubber. Fore and rear handles are EVA. The section that we hold of which is next to the reel seat is a mixture of rubber and EVA (rubber next to the reel seat fol-lowed by EVA).

Fuji Guides & Reel Seat

The guides on this rod are high quality Fuji Alconite New Concept

guide. These guides are lightweight and more heat resistance

thus offer better protection to your lines. The Fuji ACS reel seat

used here is painted and it looks superb.

Testers who tested the rod claim that the ACS reel seat here feels

more comfort than the same reel seat on other rods. Till now

there is no conclusion as to what made it so but generally we

agree that it could be the size and design of the rubber handle.

The T.Blade Accurate Spin Pro is a very well balanced rod. With such good balance it feels like a rod I once used but at almost double the price. My guess is that the designer of the rod used the metal rings and washers at the rear to bring the weight backwards thus creating a good balance.

The carbon graphite blank is in-deed high quality with a strong backbone that has a ratio of about 70:30. It absorbs shock well and has power to help you manage a tough fighting brute. It is also well built and certainly feels like the blank of more expensive rods.

Back at our lab we did a pressure test to see if the rod stood up to its 10-16lb claim. It managed to hit 15.6lb or 7.1kg and that was when we decided to stop as the harmonics coming from the rod were a bit frightening. I’m sure it will take 16lb (just 0.4lb more) but we were really near the edge.

You know when you cast out that lure and everything about that cast feels right and you just want to keep on casting just for the sake of cast-ing. Well, that is how I felt casting with the T.Blade Accurate Spin Pro. Every cast made saw the lure travel-ling long distances. The testers were surprised too with the rods casting ability.

Verdict

The VFOX T.Blade Accurate Spin Pro is nice looking sporty rod that is well balance and behaves well. It feels like some more expensive Japanese bass rods. It also comes with high quality Fuji components.

I do like it and it certainly is a quality rod. So if you’re in the market for a rod and you want to go the path less travel (instead of getting one of the common brands), this here is a rod you could consider.

Shimano and Daiwa, two of the big-gest brands in Japan; are constantly battling each other. Both have their own fan bases and both have their own strengths. This is not a battle between David and Goliath. This is a battle between two colossal Goliaths. Who will be taking home the title this round?

We have received lots of emails asking which is better (between brands and models), which would we recommend, etc. After doing the article on the Daiwa Tatula we received quite a few emails asking which is better, the Daiwa Tat-ula or the Shimano Scorpion. So we put them to battle.

Although not a new model, the Scorpion XT has a fan following. I do know of quite a few Scor-pion (not the German rock band) fans that would defend the Scor-pion no matter what. To them, the Scorpion XT is the best reel even when compared to other Shimano reels including DC models. So in-vited them to the Battle Ground.

Type R100XS

This is Daiwa’s latest reel to fea-ture the T-Wing System, which is one of its features that got me jumping like an eager child want-ing to checkout a new toy. It is said to cast further, is smoother than many other Daiwa reels with-in its price range. I do know of a few people who want to see the Tatula give the Scorpion XT an ass whooping it will never forget and so we invited them too.

The Head TurnerBeauty certainly lies in the eyes of the beholder. Asking both group of supporters and this point is certainly made clear. Scorpion fans and again, I don’t mean the rock band, like the smoother or curvier profile of the Scorpion. Daiwa fans on the other hand prefer the sportier design of the Tatula.

As for me, personally I prefer the design of the Daiwa Tatula as it is sportier. This doesn’t mean that the design of the Scorpion is bad. Just that it is somewhat dated being a few years older than the newly launched Tatula. Then again, beauty is indeed an individual thing.

Test Of Smoothness

This is where we crank the reels to see which is smoother. The Scorpion is certainly known for its smoothness but the Daiwa fans have a strong contender. With bias-ness coming from both sides of the ring, this is my take. The Shimano Scorpion takes the cake by a small margin.

The reason is because the Scorpion feels somewhat more solid and sure. The Daiwa Tatula felt vacuum like. I don’t really know how to put this in words. There is this feel-ing of emptiness or quietness. It’s like sitting in a hybrid car. All you hear is silence but you see yourself going somewhere. That is until the engine kicks in. Feels like an out of body experience.

“Did Daiwa over do it?”

Daiwa may have crossed the line with the Tatula (my per-sonal feeling) being overly smooth with the AIR Rotation System. Then again, some like it that way and some don’t. With this, the Scorpion gets a little bit more points.

The Need For Speed

“If you are in a race, the Tatula will be your choice.”

This is easy, the Daiwa Tatula has a gear ratio of 8.1:1 which means that for every crank of the handle, the spool spins 8.1 turns. The Scorpion manages a 6.3 turns to one crank of the handle. In terms of inches per turn, the tatula takes in 33.9 inches of line per handle turn while the Scorpion manages a meagre 29.5 inches. If you are in a race, the Tatula will be your choice.

The Scorpion features Shimano’s well known and proven SVS 6 point centrifugal braking system that makes the Scorpion so easy to cast with and what Scorpion fans say gives the Scorpion and edge over other Shimano DC reels as the con-trol on DC is a tad bit too much. It is also easy to get too, just with by bring up the lever and give it twist.

The Tatula features Daiwa’s superior magnetic braking system, the Mag Force Z of which gives the Tatula a wide range of control set by turning the dial. It makes casting easy but for power casters that want to go the distance, a trained thumb is definitely a must. The Tatula is also a relatively easy reel to cast.

Although both the Scorpion and the Tatula have different types of brakes, they are both relatively easy to cast with.

Castability Test

For the casting test, we reeled in 12lb monofilament lines of similar lengths, used two different rods (reels were interchanged on rods to get fair results) of different ac-tion, both used a 7.5 grams Berk-ley casting plugs, and were done at the same place by different casters.

Both reels cast very well and are easy to manage even in the wind (there were some winds that came off and on). They both cast really good distances. One of the things that fans and supporters on both sides can agree with is that both reels cast similar distances with ease.

Verdict

And the winner is...

Daiwa’s Tatula certainly has an edge over the Shimano Scor-pion XT but then again, the Scorpion is an older model with older technology and Daiwa has certainly made headways in the technology side of things.

Some of the features that may have played a role in giving the edge to the Tatula could very well be its T-Wing System that reduced the friction between line and line guide as well as the AIR Rotation System (although I have mixed feelings). As for the rest, I am hoping for a chance to dismantle them both and dive inside.

While our testers still hold on to their favourites, they can agree on one thing, in terms of points given the Tatula wins by a bit and I do agree.

When you fish why not fish in style? I have seen photos of anglers wearing a suit and tie fishing out on a boat under the sun. While that may get some chuckles going fishing doesn’t mean that you have to put on an old faded t-shirt, shorts, straw-hat, slippers, and carry a plastic box.

Every sport has got athletes that play their sport in style. From golfers to snooker and even to car racing; they all have a certain style. So if you want to fish in style and stand out of the crowd here is a bag that will help you do just that.

Carbon fibre Coolness

The VFOX soft bait and reel bag is indeed a stylish bag. Designed with an outer shell that is carbon fibre patterned, it looks professional and smart. Not only does it look good it also makes carrying your tackle convenient.

The VFOX soft bait and reel bag can be broken down into two main sections. In one section there are the clear plastic inserts and the other section is where you can place your reel and other items. They come with a certain amount of protection.

Clear Plastic Inserts

The clear plastic inserts are made of thick plastic that are tough. They are great for stor-ing soft baits new or used together with hooks. You can also place rigs that you have tied prior to your trip. These plastic inserts are tough enough to handle hooks. You don’t have to worry about them piercing through.

When you fish you can flip through them just like how you would a photo album. Choosing which rig to use of which bait to use is easy and certainly clean and not messy. Each insert also comes with a zip-lock to keep your soft baits and rigs in the bag, and not fall all out.

2 Sections

At the cover of this section is a pocket made up of a rubber net with zip. You can place lots of things here such as pliers or hook remover, packets of hooks, packets of snaps and swivels, scissors, etc.

Reel Section

The reel section of the bag is separated into three compartments. You can put reels in one section, a tackle box with your hooks, jig heads, snaps, etc. at another section, and perhaps a roll of spare leader in the other one. You could opt to keep a point and shoot digital camera in here as well with a camera case.

The VFOX soft bait and reel bag comes with a hard frame that allows it to stand like a business per-son’s case (briefcase) with rubber at the bottom to stop it from sliding. The covers on both sides are padded of which offers protection to the items sit-ting inside.

Verdict

It looks good and it offers con-venience. It also offers pro-tection to my tackle and ease of placing soft plastics. I no longer have to carry packets of soft plastics out in a large tackle bag. I just pick a few pieces from a variety of packs and place them in individual plastic inserts according to type and color. If I want more inserts, I can buy them in stores.

So what do I think? I think that I need to buy one for myself after trying it out. Now where is that tuxedo of mine?

The Italians are famous for their exotic and sexy car de-signs but when it comes to fishing rods, Japan seems to be full of Pininfarinas. Per-haps it is their hunger for extremes, as walking on the edge does not seem good enough. With carbon fibre, three letters with the last separated by a hyphen, here’s another one from the land of the rising sun.

There are quite a few offshore casting rods but not many of them come with a long name. If long names were a competi-tion, this here is a strong con-tender. Let us break it down. Abu Garcia (brand); Salty Stage (sub brand); KR-X (se-ries), and Offshore Casting (sub-series).

The KR-X Offshore Casting looks really nice and sporty thanks to its clever usage of “X” carbon wrap, subtle use of carbon fibre, and the blue of which is indeed electric. The rod feels light with good bal-ance and the quality EVA gives it a solid feel. Could this be the way of the Samurais?

According to Abu Garcia, the “X” Carbon wrap is the “turbo” of the KR-X Offshore Casting. It is by criss-crossing the carbon in an “X” direction and wrapping it over the blank that gives the rod additional power other than just relying on the backbone alone. There’s more, it also helps with casting giving more distance.

Are You A Giant Slayer?The KR-X Concept guides are secured in place with two layers of wrapping. Yes, this certainly gives them more support espe-cially when you need to slay giants. Imagine bucket seats for rod guides and perhaps you see the benefit. With the rod twisting left and right (during the battle), the guides have almost no chance of breaking free.

Anti Loosening Reel SeatDPS18 = The Reel Seat

Having fished for so many years I have on very few occasions had the reel seat nut go loose. As sel-dom as it has happened, it is a thorn in the butt when it does. Hap-pily fighting a brute and it happens; sometimes after the feeling of a pop / slip of the nut and sometimes the doing of the less conscious fin-ger.

The reel seat nut here called DPS18 is the Alcatraz of reels, im-prisoning them in place with almost zero chance of escape. It certainly is a confidence provider especially when it comes time to slay that gi-ant.

I have not had the chance of fishing with the Salty Stage KR-X Offshore Casting rod just yet. For now I like the way it feels and its design being quite mature yet sporty. The quality compo-nents it comes with makes this rod a neat package.

When I first saw the Ofmer Moon Walk lures, I was in-stantly reminded of a super-star who used to walk back-wards in a manner that would drive gals and guys crazy. Maybe, this lure will have the same effect on fishes.

I certainly want them especial-ly the cracking black striped one that looks like its wear-ing a rugged and seasoned leather jacket. They look good and they don’t cost the bomb that certain lures that look like this do. What’s better is that they are easy to use of which brings this tagline to mind; “Now everyone can walk the dog.”

Last issue we discussed Interme-diate Modulus or IM as printed on most rods such as IM6, IM7, IM8 and so on. There is another con-fusing term used to class rods and that is in tons such 24 tons, 36 tons, 40 tons, so on and so forth. So what exactly does this tell you?

The term ton(s) is used to clas-sify different blank ratings. This rating is specifically given to car-bon graphite rod blanks. It is not an industry standard but as more fishing rod brands apply this term on their rods it seems to have be-come one.

However, there is a lot of confu-sion to what the tonnage rating stands for. Just like the term IM, many in the fishing industry as well as general anglers are con-fused. Some say it is how much pressure is used to compress the graphite and some say it is the amount of carbon used in the production of graphite.

Well, again they are mostly wrong. To understand these dif-ferences perhaps it will be best to understand the construction of rod blanks.

Rod Blank Construction

Graphite rod blanks are made up of carbon, resin, glass fibres, and wrapping (various materials but mostly tape). It is a combina-tion of all these materials that a graphite rod blank is made. Let us go deeper.

Graphite Sheet

Carbon is a material that is rigid yet fragile and doesn’t have elasticity. A good example will be the lead of a pencil. The lead is rigid and doesn’t bend much. Should you try to bend one, it will easily reach its breaking point and breaks.

To give carbon elasticity glass fibres are needed. Resin is used to fuse them together with a certain amount of heat and then they are machined rolled into graphite sheets. This is where confusion is born. Some say that the tonnage equals the pressure placed on the graphite when rolling them into sheets which means 24 ton graphite is rolled using 24 tons of pressure. That’s not correct.

Let’s move on. To create the blank, the graphite sheet is unrolled to a certain desired length and cut off from the main roll. It is further cut into triangular pieces with one wide section tapering down towards the other.

Rolling Into Blanks

Before rolling these graphite sheets into cylindrical blanks, a layer of resin is added (just pic-ture glue). A mandrel is used as a mould of which the graphite sheet is rolled onto. Just like using glue to stick two pieces of plastic, the higher the pressure used, the tight-er the glued section will be until it reaches a maximum limit.

This is another area where the ton-nage confusion happens. Some claim that the amount of pressure used here to get the graphite to be as closed to each other to cre-ate the rolled blank determines the graphite tonnage. It sounds some-thing like, “24 ton graphite means that 24 tons of pressure was used here.” Wrong again.

What Does Ton Signify?Okay, let’s get straight to the point. Tonnage is used to dif-ferentiate the characteristics of various graphite sheets (not the rod per say). As mentioned ear-lier, carbon is rigid and fragile. It doesn’t flex enough to make it useable as the sole material for a rod. However, carbon is very light.

Fishing rods need to be flex-ible and we also want them light and sensitive thus the reduction of anglers using fibreglass rods and taking up graphite rods in-stead. So to make a rod light, sensitive, and with the ability to bend, glass fibres are added to the graphite sheet.

The more glass fibres added the more flexible the graphite be-comes. But this also increases the weight of the graphite. Add-ing more fibres also reduces the sensitivity of which is the ability of the rod to transmit vibrations from the line to the angler’s hands.

To control the characteristics of the graphite sheets (amount of flex-ibility, lightness, sensitivity, etc.); graphite sheet manufacturers con-trol the ratio between the amounts of carbon used and the amounts of glass fibres used (in general).

Graphite sheets rated at 24 ton will have its content of glass fibres increased while its carbon de-creased thus making is more flex-ible but at the expense of weight. 40 ton graphite on the other hand will have a decrease in glass fibres and increase in carbon making it rigid, less flexible, but lighter.

Using more carbon and lesser glass fibres poses another problem to the graphite and that is brittle-ness. This makes 40 ton graphite rods more fragile. So you have lots of power, a lighter rod, and a more sensitive rod; but it would break easily, not to mention cost more.

To strengthen 40 ton and high-er graphite, rod manufacturers add wraps and other things to it such as nano coating, food fibres, certain specialised veils (Aramid Veils for example), boron, etc. Some also use cross scrim graphite designs. These help strengthen blanks but one will still have to take extra care.

What Do These Mean To You?As an angler, understanding this bit here will help you a lot. When you see tonnage printed on rods, take it as the amounts of flexibility and other char-acteristics of the rod. You can use this piece of information to help you decide on your purchase. But do test them out as well.

24 Ton Rod Characteristics

If you are looking for a rod with a lot more bend (flex) and you don’t give to hoots about sensi-tivity and you want a rod that is lighter than fibreglass rods with reasonable amounts of back-bone strength; a 24 ton rod will be the range to look at. Superb for bottom fishing where you sit back relax and just wait for the reel to scream.

Two step up of which will give you moderate stiffness with lesser bend would be the 36 ton rods (between them are the 30 ton rods). These rods still gives you a good amount of bend but not as much as the 24 ton rods. They’re great for artificial bait or lure casting especially soft baits.

40 ton rods are a lot stiffer and more rigid giving you low amounts of bend but they are rigid, lightweight, more sensi-tive, and has more power. Great for lure casting (hard lures) es-pecially since you will need to strike before the fish finds learns about your trickery. There are still higher tonnage rods but we seldom see them here.

NoteDo understand that what I have written here is based on a gen-eralisation not taking into con-sideration manufacturer’s “miss-claims,” other properties such as blank wall thickness, etc. Do test out the rods that you intend to purchase at the tackle shops be-fore making a decision.

Another thing to understand is that weight is influence also by rod balance. A lighter rod will feel heavier if its balance is way off. This article is a good guideline to keep in mind but do exercise your own judgement when you next shop for a rod.

The Seducer

Being soft and flexible, soft baits are able to entice fish via its move-ments as well as the movements of its appendages. Slowly drag a grub or a ribbon tail worm under-water and you can see the sexy and somewhat erotic movement of its tail. Hook a shrimp bait at its tail and give it a jerk, it is live like.

What the fish sees when a soft plastic bait swims by is indeed sexy food. It could look like bait-fish, shrimps, worms, insects, frogs, etc. and they all look alive of course unless you happen to purchase one that is made of hard rubber, the likes of car tyre material. Soft bait has swagger, poise, and elegance.

From the fish’s point of view these baits are enticing and they look natural. They don’t look dan-gerous. But for these baits to look alive, you will have to manipulate them using your rod and your hands. You are the magician, the puppet master, the angler.

When the fish takes your bait, it will not feel like it just bit into a piece of hard wood or plastic. It has been proven time and time again that in a world of artificial lures, fish hold on to soft plastics longer than any other artificial lures and baits (hard). The fish could a while to decided if this is food or not.

I have personally experience pull-ing out a soft plastic bait from the fishes mouth and have it take the bait over and over again until it (the fish) saw me and decided to run for cover. Till today, that is my favourite striped snakehead (Ha-ruan: Channa striata) bait.

Feeling like food has advantages and disadvantages. The advan-tage is that you have time to strike. The disadvantage is that if you’re used to hard lures, you tend to strike too early. This is also one reason why I would rec-ommend softer rods.

Slower Action Rods

The recommendation here would be for rods that have a softer tip or slower tip (whichever you pre-fer) but with a strong back bone of which is enough to manage most fish. The slower tip helps you to manage your strike, allowing time for the fish to get hooked; while a strong backbone helps you to man-age the brute.

There are anglers who strike the second the fish takes the bait. This instinctive action has a tendency to miss (striking too early) and a rod with a stiffer tip will not be of help either.

Slower tip rods also help with presentation and allowing for more live like manipulating of baits. It allows for more gentle movements instead of sudden jerks and unnatural movements of baits. However, it is still up to the individual angler what type of rod he or she chooses.

Spinning Or Casting Reels

When it comes to reels it really de-pends on you (the angler). To me, both types of reels have a part to play. If I am casting small light rubber grubs of say one to two inches with very small jigheads, my preference will be to go with a spinning outfit.

Slightly larger or heavier soft baits with heavier jigheads gives you bet-ter flexibility. You can go with either a casting outfit or a spinning one. As I prefer casting with a casting outfit, my choice will be to use a casting outfit whenever possible.

Another fun game is finesse fishing. There are casting reels made light with shallower spools that makes casting light weight lures and soft plastics easier. However, it may not be suitable in certain instances. Pref-erence is certainly yours.

Mainlines and Leaders

This here is a tad bit technical. There are braided lines, fused lines, monofilament, fluorocarbon, and not long ago, uniflament. What lines to use should depend on the depth you intend for your bait to spend the most time in as well as presentation.

Note that all these lines have cer-tain characteristics that will help you with your fishing. Braided and fused lines tend to float (note: there are now fast sinking braided / fused lines). This makes them ideal for fishing surface predators or preda-tors that hunt the upper column of the water.

(Super lines)

Use this for slower bait drop rate

Should you want your bait to drop slowly to the bottom showing off its sexy swag-ger all the way down, braided and fused lines are the way to go. Fluorocarbon leaders will allow for a faster drop while monofilament leaders will take the slower route.

One other benefit of braided lines and fused lines is that they have very little to almost zero stretch. This means that when it comes time to strike, you are almost cer-tain of a good hook-up even at far distances.

Monofilaments

Monofilaments are great lines should you want your bait to drop faster but not too fast. These lines make good lines should you want to fish mid tier, and need some stretch or rather absorption. They are also better at taking abrasion as com-pared to super lines.

The disadvantage unfortunately is stretch. Should a fish take your bait at some far distance, stretch will be a prob-lem when you need strike as the stretch would have reduced the force substan-tially and the hook-up may be weak. This is one reason why many anglers that fish mainly on monofilaments tend to strike really hard.

Another disadvantage is presentation. Having stretch tends to leave a vacuum type feeling between the angler and the bait. Thus you may have to use more force when it comes to manipulating your baits.

Other disadvantages are diameter and line memory. Monofilament lines tend to have larger diameters as compared to super lines and they do retain shape.

There are monofilament lines with close to zero stretch and memory of which makes them a good choice especially when fishing in snags where the use of super lines may not be the choice. These lines cost more but they are worth every dollar spent.

Fluorocarbons

Fluorocarbon mainlines and leaders are superb lines to use especially when you want your bait to sink fast and when you are fishing in high pressured waters. Flu-orocarbon lines also do not have much stretch and they can certainly take a beating (fishing amongst snags).

They are also almost invisible underwa-ter (do not have glare) and are the quiet-est amongst all lines. Yes, fishing lines to make sounds underwater. The loudest being super lines and the quietest being fluorocarbons.

The disadvantage is that they are stiff and this reduces the life likeness of the soft plastic bait. Good news is that softer fluorocarbon lines are now available which makes superb mainlines and you can opt to use them as leaders. They cost a lot but again, worth every dollar.

Malaysia’s First Coarse Fishing Clinic By The Guv’nor

The stage has been set for Malay-sia’s first ever coarse fishing clinic! Perhaps some has attended some of my presentations during previous an-gling fairs but this time instead of just me babbling away we are having a practical class complete with the tack-le and a proper coaching session.

The styles of fishing that is go-ing to be taught during the day will be float and feeder fishing, the two most popular branches of fishing in Eu-rope.

Mr. Steve Lockett, a renowned an-gling journalist from the UK, will be around to show our anglers what coarse fishing is all about. Steve, who has visited and fished in Malaysia twice, has worked with many of the world’s top anglers including World Champion Will Raison, so he has quite a number of tips to share with us.

As previously published in last month’s issue of The Asian Angler Magazine, the clinic will be held as follows:

Date : 11th January 2014 (Satur-day)

Venue : Fish Valley, Semenyih (meet in front of restaurant)

Time : 830am

Please bring your own rods and reels loaded with mono line (maxi-mum of 10lbs). Some goodie bags will be given away for the early birds and there will also be some swimfeeders and floats for sale during the day if you wish to buy some. The fishing fee to be paid to the pond is RM20.

At the end of the coaching ses-sion, there will be a friendly 3-hour match where only float and feeder fishing techniques are allowed! There will also be some cool prizes to be given away for the winners.
