BACKGROUND

Ariane 5 : 67 success in a row !

Ariane 5, Soyouz and VEGA operational in Kourou and Arianespace

maintaining its market share

A rude competition with new technical and economical models

Ariane 6 and Vega-C developments decided during the

Luxembourg MC in December 2015

Airbus Safran Launcher (ASL) created in December 2014

A new governance for Ariane 6 development with design authority

to industry.

Ariane 6 and VEGA-C contracts signed in August 2015

Les Lanceurs Européens Colloque International 3-4 novembre 2015 4

ARIANE 6 KEY OBJECTIVES

• Family of launchers addressing both institutional and commercial

markets

• Advanced launch service procurement for European institutional

missions

• Half the costs of Ariane 5 per kg and target launch service prices

for institutional missions

• Fast track development plan and simplified management rules

for minimized decision time

• Vulcain main stage engine flight proven on Ariane 5

• Vinci upper stage extensively ground tested

• Common Solid Rocket Motor P120C with Vega-C (implying

specific organization) as extension of Vega flight proven P80 to

be flight qualified in 2018 on Vega-C

• Progressive phasing in of Ariane 6 and phasing out of Ariane 5

Guaranteed access to space for

Europe

Industry supporting the

commercial risk

Time-to-market :

Maiden flight in 2020,

Fully operational in 2023

Maximizing commonalities within

the European launcher family

Proven reliability to customers

A NEW GOVERNANCE FOR THE EUROPEAN

LAUNCH SECTOR

Actions

Basic principles :

• Industry in charge of design, qualification and exploitation of the Ariane

6 launcher

• Guaranteed number of European institutional launches

• Commercial exploitation risk born by industry

ARIANE 6 DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION

• MOA and launch system

architect : ESA with CNES

acting as technical directorate

• MOE launcher development :

AIRBUS SAFRAN Launchers

• MOE ground segment : CNES

A NEW ROLE FOR CNES DIRECTION DES LANCEURS

Actions

• Co-located with ESA at Paris Daumesnil

• Common ESA-CNES Ariane Project Team

• Acts as ESA Technical Directorate for launchers

• Participates to an embedded team at ASL (Les Mureaux,Vernon)

• Closely coordinates with ASL

• Is Ground Segment prime contractor and design authority

ARIANE 6 LAUNCH SYSTEM

Some example of activities at System Level

• Operational concept for test / integration / final chronology

• Ground / launcher interfaces (mecchanical / fluids / electrical) – IRD

½

• Control benches (one family for Europe and French Guyana)

• Ground Stand-by phase (dynamics)

• Take-off environement (acoustic, blast wave …)

• Lightning protection

• Combined Test in French Guyana and Qualification flight

• Growth potential : A66 ….

• …

CONCLUSIONS : MAIN ACTIONS

To consolidate the current launchers fleet exploitation until

Ariane 6 / Vega-C :

Increase of A5 GTO performance

Competitiveness

To develop Ariane 6 and VEGA-C as quickly as possible

To actively prepare post A6 launchers with the pre-development

of a future low-cost and potentially reusable engine
