Organizers look for red panels
Animals strut their stuff tomorrow at annual stock show
row morning. Possibly the largest group of animals in the history of the Abernathy Stock Show will be entered in tomorrow's show. Over 100 pigs and 70 lambs are expected, according to Gerald
The stock show will be held at Bob Durham's barn. The barn is located two miles north of Hwy. 54 on the east Frontage Road along 1-27.
Kelley. · Judging of the 4-H and FFA animals begins at 9 a.m. with cattle first , sheep second and swine last. Lynn Walling from Howard County College will serve as judge.
Because of the increased amount of animals, show organizers are gathering all the red stock show panels that have scattered over the years. If anyone has some of the panels, they are asked to deliver them to the school ag shop or directly to the stock show early tomor-.
A barbeque lunch will be served at noon . All proceeds go to the Stock Show Association.
Weigh in for the animals begins at noon today .

Varsity basketball teams busy over holidays
Abernathy's Antelopes and Lady Lopes both competed in holiday basketball tournaments. The Lady Lopes were in the Wildcat Classic in Littlefield while the Lopes were in Lubbock in the Cap rock tournament.
"It was a good tournament for us. We played five quality teams," Abernathy boys coach Wayne Riley said.
Th e Lopes opened a nd closed the tournament with losses io two 5A schools . Sandwiched in between were three wins over 4A t~ams.
Abernathy left the chute a li ttle slow in a 46-41 o~ening round loss to Monterey.
"We dug a hole in the first quarter. They hitthethreeand got us down . We contested shots in the second, third and fourth quarters. They had four guys that were 6-6 and 6-5. The point guard was 6-0. They were hard to trap. They are a good shooting team and have a
good inside game," Riley said. Chris Farr led the Lopes
with 17. Nick Bowe added 13. The team hit 3-6 free shots.
The Lopes pulled a comeback aga inst Levelland in the second round for a 53-51 win . Bowe had 19 and Farr 16.
"Trey Paden hit two three's in the third quarter. They have good shooters and quickness ."
Bowe had 19 and Ryan Bufe scored 13 in a 58-51 win over Pampa. Bowe led all players with 18 in a 42-3 1 win over Hereford . Farr had 12.
"We had a double digit lead to start the fourth quarter against Pampa. Bufe and Nick had good ball games. Bufe, Nick and Farr had good tournaments," Riley said.
"Against Hereford we played defense pretty well. We had good position in the zone. We contested shots and limited their shots to one. We kept them off the boards."

He was born on April 9, 1930, in La Capita. He marriedJa nie Ma nsa nales on Dec. 17, 1955, in Lubbock. He was a United States Veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. They moved to Abernathy in1956. He fa rmed a nd worked
for Wolflrrigation until retiring in 2000. ffc was one of the founding members of St. Isidore Catholic Church and was a member of the Sacred Heart and the Crusillistas.

S ue was employed in the ban king indus try for seventeen year s, retinng in 1993 due to health problems. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, the Sa nctuary Choir, Suns hi ne Singers and Opry GI'Oup.
She was preceded in death by he r father, J ohnny Cloud; mo t h e r , Waunita Brooks Cloud; two bi'Others, N. Charles Cloud and E. E. "Gene" Cloud.

Services were under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Abernathy.
Mrs. Paxton died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002.
She was born on Nov. 1, 1918, in Hollis, Okla. She married J. D. Farrier in 1939 in
New Deal and he preceded her in death in 1965. She married Stanley Paxton in 1983 and he preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 1997. She moved to fro m Wichita Falls to Abernathy in 1965 and in 1998 she moved back to Wichita Falls. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include one son, Marshall Ray Farrier and his wife, Sue, ofWichita Falls; one sister, Sarah Graham of Abernathy; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren

In the Wildcat Classic, Abernathy's host team welcomed them with a 46-33 defeat. LyssaLutrick led the Lady Lopes, which had a 6-5 lead after the first period, with 10 points.
AHS followed that with a 73-44loss to district rival Lockney and a 63-58loss to Artesia (N.M.).
