A very special thank you goes out to Ruth Hub-scher for the beautiful quilts she made and de-livered to my Thorsby FCSS office.

Fire Permit Season Now Underway
From Leduc County
Fire permits are required for open burning from March 1 to Oct. 31. Individuals wishing to burn an open fire in Leduc County must obtain a free fire permit from a local fire guardian. In addition to helping us keep track of open burning in the county, fire permits provide Leduc County Fire Services with an opportunity to dis-cuss safe burning practices with residents so we can work together to prevent brushfires and out-of-control burning.Brad Gurmin, Fire Marshal Fire permits are required each time an individ-ual wishes to conduct an open burn, and can be obtained by calling a local fire guardian. Fire guard-ians volunteer their time to provide fire permits to applicants and may not be able to respond immedi-ately to requests. Applicants are encouraged to provide as much notice as possible in advance of an open burn. Fire permits are not required when a fire is be-ing used for the purpose of cooking or warmth in approved fire pits, or when the fire is contained in approved burn barrels. There is no charge for obtaining a fire permit; however, there are penalties for burning without one and for burning while a fire restriction or fire ban is in place. Fire permit holders must abide by all fire re-strictions and bans issued for Leduc County; advis-ories, restrictions or bans are posted to albertafire-bans.ca.

Straight Out of ThorsbyFrom the County of Leduc, from Alberta and Canada, from Singapore to the U.K., from Aus-tralia to Holland, from the USA to Panama, Thorsby graduates are making a difference. This is the fourteenth installment in a series of profiles which indicate what a small school and community can produce. The people who conduct the interviews are Audrey Brosseau and John Elson. If you have. suggestions please contact John at 780-789-3822 or Audrey at 780-886-0658.
Dr. Douglas B. NelsonNelson’s Educational Consulting Group Ltd.
necg@telus.net or 780.660.6319 CellSupporting your planning, visioning, and
implementation endeavours.
Doug Nelson was born in Bengough, SK. where he attended grades 1-3. The family then moved to Eckville, AB. In the summer of 1968, when Doug was going into grade nine, his parents, Bernard and Audrey, purchased the McLeod Store in Thorsby, a life-long dream. Audrey was hired as a teacher in the Thorsby Elementary School. The McLeod Store stood where the Thorsby Town Office now is. Doug learned about retail sales and became clerk, stock boy, and warehouseman. Although his wage was modest he was able to purchase a red Suzuki 80. Gas was $.45 per gallon at Zingle’s Garage (HiWay 39 Motors) but Doug’s wage of $.50 per hour off-set this expense. With his new found pals (Harry Schmolke and Richard Popik to name two) he soon became acquainted with Thorsby streets and rural roads. His world had expanded and life was good.
For a man of decidedly intellectual leanings, Doug’s remembrances of school days at THS are surpris-ing. The curriculum is somewhat blurry but it is well remembered that the Bunsen burners in the lab could be attached to the water spigots and a scalpel-like stream of water could be released. The sport of water fighting became popular although admittedly someone could have lost an eye. One teacher would introduce expanding gases by tak-ing a fire extinguisher, flipping the nozzle and blast-ing out the white gas with a loud roar. On one occa-
sion a foam ball (Doug thinks it was procured from somewhere in the planetary system) was pushed up inside the nozzle. When the valve was opened the ball blasted out and hit one of the keeners in the front row. Doug now moved to the back row, real-izing someone could have lost an eye.
One of the most memorable, yet disgusting, pranks was perpetrated by placing a piece of plastic vomit (easily procurable at a novelty shop) on a news-paper beside one teacher’s desk. It was a very good imitation. The teacher leaped and roared, shook his fist, vowed he would not clean it up! As he demonstrated against this horrible happening he believed he heard derisive laughter from certain areas of the classroom, particularly the back row. This gave the schooldad pause and he suddenly realized he had been duped – there is no fool like an old fool! To this day it is not known who placed the offending artifact on the newspaper although a certain trail of suspicion follows one of the students who, on that day that will live in infamy, was sitting in the back row.
Doug Nelson enjoyed all sports. Besides water fighting there was football, hockey and wrestling. However, as he was expected to work at the store after school, his participation was necessarily lim-ited. He found football a huge amount of work and a greater amount of fun. Doug and pal Harry made the team as offensive guards and did double duty as defensive tackles. But their offensive role, pro-tecting quarterback Dwayne Brod was their sole focus. Although Doug hasn’t seen Dwayne for a while he remembers him as 6’3” while he and Harry averaged 5’6 ½” The fun part was what these fearless competitors learned about trap blocking, 2 man blocking (double teaming) and blocking for quarterback sneaks. They are remembered for the way they could pull and lead a sweep, particularly to the right. The concomitant values arising were teamwork, hard work, and loyalty; lessons well learned. Hockey was a joy for Doug and he played defense when THS put together a team that com-peted against neighbouring schools.
A visit to the U. of A. during high school helped Doug discern his path for the future. He graduat-ed from THS in 1972, then achieved a B.ED with distinction in Technical-Vocational Education from
THE THORSBY TARGET, WWW.COMMUNITY39.COM, 780-887-0077, MARCH 8, 2019 EDITION #1304
the U. of A. (1976). The next step was a M.ED in Vocational Administration, also from the U. of A. In 1980, not one to stop when further advancement beckoned, he enrolled at Arizona State University (Tempe, AZ.) and completed his Doctorate in Sec-ondary Curriculum Design/ Special Needs Educa-tion in 1990.
Of course, between these academic achieve-ments, work was a necessity and Doug found his niche with Edmonton Catholic Schools. He served nine years as teacher and Department Head, then 10 years as Principal. He was appointed to Super-intendent Services and followed this up with two years as Project Manager in advanced education with the Government of Alberta. For seven years he was Executive Director of SafeStart: Educa-tion and Athletics. This is a safety strategy used throughout the world to keep individuals safe on the job, at home and during recreation. A number of these projects were overlapping as evidenced by his appointment to the School Board of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation by Chief Cam Alexis. He was on the Board for seven years, eventually replacing the Superintendent and Principal. He “held the fort” in this position until suitable replacements could be found. For the last twenty-one years he has headed Nelson’s Educational Consulting Group which pro-vides educational services to School Districts and educational authorities providing Annual Reports, Safety Audits and Strategic Planning. Besides all this, time has been found to be a part-time assist-ant professor and sessional lecturer at the Univer-sity of Alberta, Concordia College and Memorial University of Newfoundland. If there was such a thing as a degree in “multi-tasking” Doug Nelson would undoubtedly receive the highest award.
Doug and Bonnie were married in 1975. Their union has been blessed with two sons. Michael holds a Ph. D. from the U. of A. He completed his post-doctoral work at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. He currently holds the position of research scientist in cardio-pulmonary processes (engaged with three labs) at UTA (University of Texas in Arlington). He is married to Megan and they are the parents of a daughter. Sean holds a B. Comm. from McEwan University. He is now a Red Seal Electrician and Project Manager in the oil industry with National Oilwell Varco. As a lifelong learner Sean is now
working on his Project Management Diploma. He is married to Yazmin. They live in Edmonton with their son and daughter. Doug sees life as a series of ups and downs. After a valley there will likely be a mountain so enjoy the ups, hold tight during the downs because a brighter time will follow. Coming out of Thorsby one is im-bued with the philosophy of “work hard and play harder” Many thanks to the parents and teachers. But above all “Family is #1”
Little known fact: While teaching at Memorial Uni-versity in Newfoundland Doug got the “scuba itch”. He now holds the qualification of PADI (Profession-al Association of Dive Instructors) – a most interest-ing sideline.
