Term 3 Week 4 | 16 August 2017
Tena koutou e te whanau, he mihi nui kia koutou katoa Kia ora, Talofa lava and Bonjour. Welcome to week 4 of term 3
David’s note Dear parents, whānau, aiga and caregivers The past few weeks have proven to be valuable in terms of further strengthening our school community. These have included social events such as the Seaside Soiree, The Milk and Cookies Evening and Inner City Sports. Over the next few weeks our community will have the opportunity to engage in student learning opportunities across rōpu. On Monday 4th September from 2:00pm to 3:30pm our Kiwi Connection (The Village and The Hub) and Mua I Malae will be hosting our “Treasure Hunt of Learning”. One of the purposes of this event is to build upon current parent engagement to enhance our school values, vision and to celebrate your child’s success as a learner. We are trying something new for our Kiwi Connection and Mua I Malae parents as we are aware that evenings have been difficult for many. There are further details of this event later in this newsletter. Te Whānau Whāriki and L'Archipel will continue with their evening hui this week. The hui for Te Whānau Whāriki and L'Archipel are on Thursday 17th at 6:00pm in their respective learning spaces. Please join us this Friday for our whole school assembly. This happens in the hall at just after 9am. This week’s assembly is being hosted by Novena's Home Group.

Seaside Soiree- A huge thank you
We had a fantastic night on Saturday. A huge thank you goes to all our families who brought tickets to the event, donated to our silent auction, generously bid on auction items and sponsored the evening (special mention goes to Everybody's and DJ House of Bamboo) – your support is much appreciated and we couldn't have done it without you.
We raised just over $10,000 which will go towards outdoor items for our school, we'll let you know what is purchased in due course.
A special thanks to the Organising Committee: Rachel, Robyn and Rosie your thought and effort is appreciated by the community (from the staff at RRS).
PAST AND UPCOMING EVENTS
Milk and Cookies Evening Tuesday 8th August Thank you to everyone that came along last Tuesday to the annual Milk and Cookies evening. It was great to see so many whānau from our community enjoying books, milk and cookies and each others company across all four of our rōpu. Also thanks to Anne and her wonderful Year 13 Food and Technology students from Mount Albert Grammar School. The cookies were part of their baking assessment and they went fast! It’s always great to involve the wider community.
THE AA SCHOOL SAFETY INITIATIVE No matter how you play it, it is a challenge getting the kids to school in the morning. With AA Members expressing road safety concerns about getting the kids to and from school, we want to be able to talk to AT about these local issues and the difficulties you’re facing as part of the school commute.
Whether it’s speeding, signage problems, pedestrian crossings, parking, or footpath obstacles, we want to hear it!
Share your thoughts with us: https://aa.mysocialpinpoint.com/school-safety - /
1. Zoom in to your area on the map 2. There are four categories for you to drag and drop the road-safety icons
to the map 3. Leave us a comment and your details
There are instructions as the page opens, as well as on the info tab to your left if you get lost. If you encounter any problems, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
We’ll be in touch shortly to update you on the kind of feedback we received. Any information you provide to us here will remain anonymous for the purpose of our discussions with Auckland Transport
Kind regards, Vanessa Wills - Senior Advisor Infrastructure

Tukituki Muka - 'To Prepare Flax' The area at the north end of Jervois Road was a flax processing area. Flax would be harvested from the wetlands in the Cox's Bay gully then processed into rope and other fibers for clothes and dried on the north facing hill slopes of Herne Bay. Whiria te tangata ka puta he orange whiria ngā mahi toi ka puta he tino rangatiratanga – By weaving people promotes wellbeing by weaving the art promote excellent.
Opoutukeha - 'Poutukeha's Place' Also known as Poutukeka this ancestor arrived on the Tainui waka. In time the stream became a boundary between early Iwi, Ngati Riu and Ngati Huarere.
Te Rae o Kawharu - 'The Brow of Kawharu' A Waikato ancestor who led Ngati Whatua on a number of military campaigns in the 16th century into the Auckland Isthmus from the South Kaipara. At Arch Hill he rested after a battle and named it after his brow as was the Maori custom to proclaim mana over the land.
REMINDERS
LUNCH ORDERS
If you want to order a lunch for your child on the day, the school has teamed up with 2 restaurants in Ponsonby/Grey Lynn: Subway Ponsonby and Pane & Vino.
You can order Subway:
- Everyday at school by dropping your Subway envelope before 9am on the day.
Please just make sure that the envelope has: the child's name, the correct room number, the money (Subway give back the change if need be) and the detail of the order. Subway has been notified that we are going water only, so any drink ordered will be automatically swapped by a bottle of water.
- Through YQ. This service is available everyday, but you need to order before 9.30am on the day.
You can access the website here www.yq.co.nz or download the mobile app.
Lunches from Pane & Vino can now be ordered everyday through our school online shop.
WATER ONLY
From the start of this term we have been a ‘water only school’. School staff will be reminding children of this and will also remove drinks other than water from children. They will be asked to take it home and not to bring it back.
SCHOOL DONATIONS
• $300 a year for the 1st child (or $75 a term) • $200 a year for the 2nd child (or $50 a term) • $150 a year for the 3rd child (or $37.5 a term) You can pay at the office during office hours, on our online shop at his link (https://goo.gl/By6xoT) or through online banking at the following account: Richmond Road School 12-3011-0757539-00.
