Why Temperance?
People blamed crime, poverty, and even mental illness on drunkenness
The use and abuse of Alcohol was common during the early 1800’s.
Many reformers called for Temperance – moderation in drinking
habits
How?
Some reformers wanted drinking to be banned all together
They pushed for laws that banned the sale of alcohol. Maine was the first state to pass this law. Other states followed suite.
However most states lifted their bans after a little time had passed.
