Agency Initiative Federal Communications Commission Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) In 2003, the FCC established licensing and service rules for the Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) Service in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Radio Service in the 5.850-5.925 GHz band (5.9 GHz band). The DSRC Service involves vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications. Mobility Fund Auction – Phase I $300 million in funding for deployment of new mobile infrastructure (83,000 road miles in 31 states that lack 3G or 4G service). Mobility Fund Auction – Phase II FCC will provide an additional $50 million in one–time support to Tribal Lands and $500 million annually for ongoing support to mobile services in Phase II of Mobility Fund.
Federal Highway Administration Real–time System Management Information Program (23 C.F.R. 511) Mandate on states to provide the capability to monitor in real–time the traffic and travel conditions of the major highways across the U.S. The 511 Program is to be established on all Interstate routes by November 2014 and on other significant roadways by November 2016. A portion of approximately $311 million authorized for fiscal years 2013 and 2014 for 23 U.S.C. 134 Programs is available to states to implement the 511 mandate.
