INTRODUCTION

• Location No. 7 Xini yi District Taipei Taiwan

History• Planning for Taipei 101 began in July 1997

initially centered on a proposal for a 66-story tower to serve as an anchor for new development in Taipei's 101 business district.

• It wasn't until the summer of 2001 that the city granted a license for the construction of a 101-story tower on the site. In the meantime, construction proceeded and the first tower column was erected in the summer of 2000.

• The formal opening of the tower took place on New Year's Eve 2004. A few hours later the first fireworks show at Taipei 101 heralded the arrival of a new year.

DESIGN PHILOSPHY OR CONCEPT

LEE & PARTNERS Architects & Planners. C.Y. Lee & Partners is an architectural partnership initiated by architects C.Y. Lee and C.P. Wang in 1978. With V.T. Wu as the firm's general manager, C.Y. Lee & Partners

The architect and engineer who designed the building Taipei 101 was:

•The design is inspired by traditional Chinese architecture, with a shape resembling a pagoda. The sectioned tower is also inspired by the bamboo plant, which is a model of strength, resilience, and elegance.

•The tower's design specifications are based on the number "8", a lucky number in traditional Chinese culture; it features 8 upward-flaring sections, and is supported by 8 supercolumns.

•101 represents the concept of striving for beyond perfection.•The exterior walls of each section are marked with a Ruyi design which directly translated as you wish.

•TAIPEI is mnemonic for Technology, Art, Innovation, People, Environment, and Identity. 101 represents the concept of striving for beyond perfection.

It is the first world's tallest building in the 21st century.

The main damper is visible from the restaurant and bar which encircles the space around the ball.

There's a giant LOVE sculpture that you can take picture with just right outside of the main entrance.

** Food court at basement floor (including the all popular xiao long bao restaurant Din Tai Fung)

There is a station for the Taipei Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) beneath the building awaiting the eventual construction of the Hsinyi line.

ResturantsThere are three restaurants to choose from Diamond Tony’s Panorama, Shin Yeh 101, both on 85F, or Ding Xian 101, which occupies the whole 86 F. High end shopping mall - it was a bit like Las Vegas malls with five floors to explore (e.g. Louis Vuitton, Prada, Dior, Fendi, Tiffany & Co., Gucci, Coach, etc)

Architectural design And plan views

The world’s largest passive tuned mass wind damper, suspended from level 92 down to level 88

36 columns provide vertical support, including eight mega columns around the perimeter

The structure is reinforced by a Moment Frame System linking the columns on all floors

The Tower is built on 380 concrete piles, sunk 80 meters into the ground

One of the most stable buildings ever constructedReinforced by 380 piles driven 262 feet into the groundEach pile is 5 feet in diameter and can withstand a load of 1100-1450 tons, that is 2,900,000 pounds each.

Unique Material or character

Non-reflective Double Low-E Glass Curtain Wall

The building has the world's fastest elevators, traveling upwards at 1008 meters/minute (60.48 km/hour) and downwards at 610 m/min. (36.6 km/hour).

Each elevator is designed with an aerodynamic body, pressurization and emergency braking systems, and the world's first triple-stage anti-overshooting system. The cost for each elevator is over $US 2 million

elevatorsultra high speed elevators, it zoom up from the 1st to the 89th floor observation deck. The speed is 1,010 meters per minute (60 kilometers per hour)! These are The World's Fastest Elevators. This elevator introduced various new technology for high speed performance, keeping comfortable and safety ride. The big panorama from this tallest building fascinates people. Guinness World Record authorizes this elevator as "The World's Fastest".

New year fire works in Taipei 101

Every year a spectacular presentation of fireworks is done at Taipei 101 to welcome the New Year.

A 900-ton tuned mass damper is installed on the 87th floor to counter earthquakes and typhoons. It will be available for public viewing from the restaurant levels and observation deck

Taipei 101's massive wind damper, a device that keeps the building from experiencing the unfortunate effects of wind vibration, is one of the few in the world on display to visitors and can be seen up close on the 89th floor, as well.

A damping system was implemented to reduce the excessive lateral accelerationsfrom wind

Tuned mass damper of stacked field-welded steel plates will swing as a pendulum on steel cables.

Leed and green sustainability

Taipei 101 is also highly energy efficient, and received LEED Platinum Certification in 2012, which is the highest award for sustainable construction, which also made it the tallest green building in the world. It took 8 months

Energy and Atmosphere -VAV sensors calibration -Chiller plant optimization program -Sub-metering plants and equipment -Implement energy audit and verification Water Efficiency -Replace toilet flush valve, urinal flush valve, install aerators in sink -Alter irrigation system and utilize rain water Indoor Environment Quality -Air flow measurement -Install humidity sensors -Install more CO2 sensors

Energy and Atmosphere (EA) -Over 30% better in energy performance than average building -Monitoring and recording 40% of total energy usage Water Efficiency (WE) -Decrease potable water usage by 30% -625 SM of on-site landscape uses 100% rainwater Sustainable Site (SS) -All parking spaces are in basement -84% building occupiers take public transportation to work every day. 26

Material and Resources (MR) -Waste management program recycle rate up to 71% -Low-mercury and no-mercury lamp fixtures with only 58.5 picograms (standard is 90) Indoor Environment Quality (IEQ) -Utilizes CRI* approved vacuum cleaners for better cleaning efficiency and healthier environment, an average score of 1.61 Orderly Spotlessness. -Over 65% of tenant occupied space enjoy exterior view -Smoke free and applies high levels of outdoor filtered air

Merits and demerits

Safety

• During construction the building caused death

• A major earthquake took place in Taiwan during 31 March 2002 destroying a construction crane at the roof top, which was at floor number 47. The crane fell down onto the Xinyi Road beneath the tower, crushing several vehicles and causing five deaths. Taipei 101's roof was completed three years later on 1 July 2003.

demerits

Cost•Taipei is more expensive than lower structures. Besides costing more to construct, it require more money and work hours to clean, repair and renovate. Making it uneconomically.

SymbolismTaipei provide symbolic benefits that other types of buildings lack. Besides proclaiming the architectural abilities of a given nation or culture, it is used to commemorate important movement's like new year.

LEEDIt is an LEED and green sustainable building that does not harm the environment or surrounding .

External effectit is building that resists the external effects like the earthquake and wind.

Space and viewLike any other towers Taipei also provide large amount of space with in a certain area and also provides view from above
