TECHNOLOGY:BOON OR BANE?

WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY? Technology is the process by which humans

modify nature to meet their needs. Technology can be viewed as an activity that

forms or changes culture. Technology is the application of math,

science, and the arts for the benefit of life. Technology is one of the greatest invention of

mankind. It is so powerful that it shapes our thinking and our way of life within no time.

APPLICATION OF TECHNOLOGY:

APPLICATION OF TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION: Ex: Methods of teaching, softwares , etc. IN MEDICINE: Ex: ECG machines, computer chips, curing diseases, etc. IN BUSINESS: Improves communication, marketing, productivity, customer service, etc. IN ENTERTAINMENT: Ex: film, television and advertising.

DARK SIDE OF TECHNOLOGY:

DARK SIDE OF TECHNOLOGY When technology gets in wrong hands, the results can be dangerous and can simultaneously have negative impact on sustainability of human race. Some Examples: Increase in violence due to advancement in the production of arms and ammunitions, bombs, bio-chemical and nuclear weapons. Ex: Atom bomb at Hiroshima and nagasaki during world war II.

.. Increase in pollution has resulted from technological advancement which has degraded our environment and has polluted our water bodies to a great extent. Hacking, stealing of personal information and other such cyber crimes have emerged from the misuse of technology.

A.

Read the paragraphs given below and analyze the message of the comic strips/photograph given below, then come together in small group to discuss your answers to the question IS TECHNOLOGY A BANE OR BOON?

Barely a month ago, I gave a tele-address from Malacanang to the site of 4th National Convention of Philippine Government Organization for Information Technology (GO-IT). The convention was held in Tacloban, Leyte, an island in southern Philippines several hundred kilometres from Manila. My rather heavy work schedule prevented me from being present at the convention, but as a firm believer and a true disciple of true technology as a management tool, I made that tele-address. I spoke with participants over the airwaves and truly felt that the quality of my interaction with them was no less meaningful and rewarding than if it had occurred in ‘real time” and “real place”. I had saved valuable time, and as a result, I was able to do more for the day. Just as importantly, my audience and I accomplished something valuable together.

... Technology can be fascinating and mind-boggling in what it can do. It can bring distant places and people together, establishing invisible but powerful connections. It can transform societies, economies and cultures by opening them up to other ideas and other options, raising new expectations and creating new needs. It can release and rechannel previously unknown or wasted energies into more productive endeavours, allowing its users to pursue more creative goals.

But the fact remains that i=unless technology and all other agents and factors of modernization are invested with human values and used for the social good, then they will be a little more than expensive toys for the amusement of a few.

... For one thing, the pervasiveness of technology has created learning environment we never even imagined just a few decades ago. Learning has no more geographic boundaries. It is no longer confined to the school campus.

The learner now acquires knowledge anywhere, anytime _ in the home, in workplace, in recreation areas, in the streets, the learner has become his or her own investigation seeking knowledge. And the teacher? H or she is no longer the sole provider of instruction.

Together with many, many other stakeholders in education, the teacher must now provide learner-centered choices in knowledge acquisition. These choices include the choice of place and time where to access and receive instruction, the choice of learning styles, and the choice of channels and delivery systems through which learners gain knowledge.

The learner today, theoretically at least, has countless choices; and the teacher must be there to help he learner choose wisely...

B. Below are reactions to the questions ‘Do instant messaging, email, cell phones and other gadgetry bring family members closer or drive them apart?”

“Using s lot of high-tech gear to communicate at home is a poor proxy for face to face communication and sees omnipresent technological ties as threatening to intimacy.” B.L.

“... Typing to each other instead of talking to each other can only lead to problems down the road, such as teens using email to deceive parents about their activities.” G.W.

“My husband and I talk more throughout the day because of instant messaging. My communication with far-flung relatives is very much enriched by it.” R.K.

“I thought our marital relationship would suffer when I left my wife for a consultancy job abroad for eighteen months. E-mails missives made us more aware, more accepting and more communicative.” M.C.P.

“How can computerized communication, in place of face-to-face family communication and hugs, deepen dialogue?” T.H.

C. Study these comic strips. Find out what it depicts about the consequence of the use of technology on RELATIONSHIPS, LEARNING and LIFE.

Based on the readings you just did and the analysis of the comic strips, discuss in your small groups your answer to this question.

DO YU HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE SIMILAR TO WHAT YOU READ?

ANALYSIS

Guiding Questions: 1. What blessings did technology bring?2. What problems did technology likewise

bring?3. Is technology good or bad?

APPLICATION

Technology as BOON

• The students uses computer for doing their project and researches.

• The T.V is use for better understanding of one topic. And when it use for the source of information of what is happening to the country and to the world.

•  The students handle their cell phones to communicate with their classmates and teachers of school purpose.

Technology as BANE• The students made to accept that all information

they get from internet is the only truth.• The computer games become their hobbit.• The T.V makes the student a mere spoliator not an

active participant in the drama of life.• They using cell phones most of the time even in

time of class discussion on the classroom.•  The students surfs the internet only for nonsense

video or topic. And also pornography.• The students make a cutting class just only to play

computer games with their friends or school mates in computers shop.

B. Each group must get a quotation and together must explain its meaning.

1. “Technology or perish.” John R. Price

2. “All our technological progress, our very civilization, is like the axe in the hand of the pathological criminal.”Albert Einstein

3. “If there is a technological advance without social advance, there is, almost automatically, an increase in human misery.” Michael Harrington

Educational Technology, for me is very much appreciated.  Though, we knew that everything in this world have an advantages and disadvantages.  But we as a human we have to follow or go to the flow of civilizations.  Even farmers or carpenters needs to be educated to use modern facilities and changes to make more products,to make the production easier and faster, resulting a good and best qualities.

How can we imagine a career women who don't even know how to use a semi auto washing  machine?  At my stage, as a Mommy and a student, its very important for me using a new households technology like washing machine, stoves refrigerator, etc.Very important to me to manage my time to my kids responsibilities while studying and helping to my husband for the sake of our family  future.  So, for me, Educational Technology, is very important and helpful, it is like a gadgets or computers that needs to up-grade.

We knew that Filipino workers are highly in demand globally,  (whatever skills, aspect or whatever degree they've finished),  having a knowledged or being educated technologically is an advantage and are very competitive, so learning and education about technologies give us a big help not only to ourselves but also to country.  We need to be frank  that as a citizen we have to moving on about the old one,but we don't need to just keep it away to our mind, what I mean is we took ideas from old times practiced, we just need to enhance, develop and improve the new style, new technology effectively by education of technology, for our better future and ahead to others.

CONCLUSION

Technology has laid an extensive burdern on irreplacable resources and though it has increased human potential, it has subsequently reduced human limits. Advancement in technology is a boon to human mankind as well as a bane if misused which risks our life and nature.
