The next decade will be critical as we work to address the global challenges that are combining to fundamentally re-shape our economic and social landscapes.

High levels of disruption are now a given as we respond to the effects of climate change, new ways of working, future proofing supply chains, or how we will feed a growing population on shrinking global resources.

This kind of change presents high levels of risk, but also significant opportunity for organisations ready to create a positive future, both for themselves and by actively working with others to reshape the systems they rely upon.

Why a School of System Change?

In the face of complex challenges there arenot enough people operating with thecapacity to shift systems.

In this global emerging area of practice,people need to learn from one another’sexperience so they aren’t starting fromscratch.

Growing a global community of changeagents is our best chance to accelerate atransition to a sustainable future.

Purpose

A systems change approach can:- Enable the development a better analysis of the challenge – [systems

diagnosis] Support strategic decisions making

- by better understanding where the leverage to intervene is in the systems and challenge of choice and how to understand impact

- As well as supporting the design and approach to the interventions one might take [including partnership, participatory and funding approaches]

What does the breakthrough of rock’n’roll tell us about how change

happens?

How does change happen?‘A transition is a radical, structural change of a societal (sub)system that is the result

of a co-evolution of economic, cultural, technological, ecological and institutional developments at different scale-levels.’

(Rotmans et al, 2001).

1. It challenges the myth of the hero

2. It didn’t emerge overnight

3. It was the result of a broader societal, political, technological change process

What can we learn from this story?

1. It challenges the myth of the hero. It came about as a coalescing of socio-cultural events and trends , as well as repeated waves of technical innovation.

2. It didn’t emerge overnight, but through the repeated reconfiguration of different systems.

3. It was embedded in a broader change process.Social and technical developments in the 1930s and 1940s helped set the stage for the music revolution of the 1950s.

4. It continued to evolve. After its breakthrough in the 50s, rock continued to change and mature, undergoing further changes and mutations, developing new subgenres and influencing others.
