Testosterone is the hormone which results in
the development of manly features in a male
body. It puts hair on a man’s chest and face! It
is also the driving force behind his sexual
desires. During the puberty phase it is this
hormone that develops the body mass and
muscle mass in males. Testosterone also helps
in deepening the voice in males and in
boosting the size of the penis and the testes.
During adulthood, this hormone plays a vital
role in developing and maintaining the muscle
mass and making the bones stronger.

Generally we think that low testosterone affects
only aged or at least middle aged men. But, today
the occurrence of low testosterone symptoms is
really high. Age is not the only factor contributing
to these symptoms. Changing lifestyles, obesity or
even medication can affect hormone levels in a
man from an early age. Sometimes even the
presence of a benign tumor in the pituitary gland
can be cause of decreasing levels of testosterone
in a male body. Generally if the testosterone level
in a man falls below 300 nanograms per deciliter,
it is called a condition of low T and requires
treatment.

Reduced levels of testosterone in men tend to leave them grumpy, anxious,
prone to bouts of anger and dissatisfied with life in whole. Frustration and
sadness are also related to the low T problems. Generally women are known
to experience major mood swings but that is not true always. Men too
experience radical mood changes especially if they are suffering from low
levels of testosterone in their body generally show this kind of behavior. It is
also popularly known as the ‘irritable male syndrome’.
40-60 is the critical period for men as their lives undergo drastic changes in
every possible way. Family, spouse, job and children- every aspect undergoes
a change during these 20 years. So, the effects of low T might seem to be
enhanced during these years.

Men in the age group over 70 have a high risk of suffering from
heart ailments and diabetes. Studies have revealed that low
testosterone levels are correlated with such symptoms. The riddle is,
would treating the testosterone level in men over 70 reduce their
probability of suffering from such life threatening diseases? At 70, the
concern of low T shifts from having sexual desire to having a proper
overall health. Studies have proved that men who have really high
levels of testosterone even at this age naturally, are at a lower risk of
suffering from stroke or heart diseases. The level of testosterone is
around 550. Low testosterone levels combined with other factors such
as obesity or smoking habits or poor lifestyle, excessive cholesterol
levels can actually aid to worsening the condition for men over 70.

Men with low T levels are also at a higher risk of suffering from
osteoporosis and osteopenia. These are associated with low
testosterone symptoms in men over 80 especially. The bone density
reduces drastically between 70 to 80 years of age due to the lower
levels of testosterone and thereby results in bone thinning. The
immediate consequences are reduced mobility and a very high risk of
fractures. It also results in loss of height or slouching and suffering
bone breaks even from the most minor incidents.
Thus, across various age groups men can suffer from various kinds
of low testosterone symptoms. These are warning signs one should
never ignore. Men should consult a doctor and discuss their problems
to arrive at a proper solution and embrace good health.
