Section 1 Plan Images available in SAILIS
This section details the plan types that are available in the South Australian Integrated Land Information System (SAILIS). Access to SAILIS is available through the South Australian Government website; plan images can be viewed online, printed or downloaded as PDF or TIFF files.
Some plan types listed below do not have a full set of images in SAILIS. In these cases, a list of the plan numbers that are available is given.
The following original records have been archived by State Records:
Dealings 1 – 362,091
Survey Office Diagram Books
Imperial and metric titles
See the State Records Research Centre website for opening hours and details on ordering and viewing original records.
Other original records are stored by Lands Titles SA and can be ordered in SAILIS and viewed in the LTO Viewing Room, ground floor, 101 Grenfell Street, Adelaide, open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday; turnaround time for orders is 72 hours.
Additional search information may be available by visiting the LTO Information Counter, also on the ground floor.
Deposited Plans
All Deposited Plans (DPs) are available in SAILIS, including plans being examined prior to their deposit. If the plan cannot be found in SAILIS, check the manual plan journals for DPs below 22585 (filed in the storeroom, 1st Floor, LTSA).
The originals of completed plans lodged manually prior to Electronic Plan Lodgement (EPL) are stored at the Netley facility. Uncompleted plan originals prior to EPL are stored in ‘Verti-Plan’ cabinets in the Division Services.
Community Plans
All Community Plans are available in SAILIS, including plans being examined prior to deposit.
The originals of the completed plans lodged manually prior to EPL are stored at the Netley facility. Uncompleted plan originals prior to EPL are stored in ‘Verti-Plan’ cabinets in Division Services. A set of manual plan journals are filed in the storeroom, 1st Floor, LTSA.
Filed Plans
All Filed Plans (FPs), including ULPI (Unique Land Parcel Identification), numbered 100,000 onward, are available in SAILIS. Plans being examined prior to being accepted for filing are also available. If the plan cannot be found in SAILIS, check the manual journals for FPs below 25800 (filed in the storeroom, 1st Floor, LTSA).
The originals of the completed plans (less than 100,000) lodged manually prior to EPL are stored at the Netley facility. Uncompleted plan originals prior to EPL are stored in ‘Verti-Plan’ cabinets in Division Services.
Strata Plans
All Strata Plans are available in SAILIS.
The originals of the completed plans are stored at the Netley facility. Uncompleted plan originals are stored in ‘Verti-Plan’ cabinets in Division Services.

GRO Plans
Most of the GRO Plans from 1978 onwards that contain useful land parcel data should be available in SAILIS. Most plans that include an aerial photo (i.e. Heritage and Forestry plans) are not available in SAILIS.
GRO Plans prior to 1978 and some of the Forestry plans have been added to SAILIS as requested. If the plan is not in SAILIS, it can be ordered in SAILIS or at the Information Counter, LTSA. See Contact details.
The originals of GRO plans prior to 1978 are stored at the Old System Unit. See Contact details. The remainder are stored at the Netley facility except for the recent year plans and some large colour plans, which are with Division Services. Division Services have a set of manual journals.
GRO Plans 520 - 612/1979 were transferred to Births Deaths and Marriages Registration Division.
LTO A, B & C Plans
LTO A, B & C are available in SAILIS, except for a small number of unaccepted plans. Copies of unaccepted plans can be ordered in SAILIS or at the Information Counter, LTSA.
These plans are associated with search references (e.g. X search) and either dockets, applications or documents; these records are linked in SAILIS through the cross reference facility.
The originals of the completed plans are stored at the Netley facility.
A paper print of the plan is usually found in the associated document.
Tube Plans
Tube Plans are available in SAILIS, except for a small number of unaccepted plans. Copies of unaccepted plans can be ordered in SAILIS or at the Information Counter, LTSA.
References to Tube Plans in the Survey Mark Search are prefixed with 'B' (e.g. Tube plan 25 is shown as B25).
These plans are associated with search references (e.g. X search) and either dockets, applications or documents; these records are linked in SAILIS through the cross reference facility.
The originals of the completed plans are stored at the Netley facility.
A paper print of the plan is usually found in the associated document.
Road Plans
All Road Plan (RP) images are available in SAILIS together with a cross reference system between the Road Plan (RP or LTO Tracing) number and the earlier Council name and number system that existed prior to the merger of the functions of the Registrar-General and Surveyor-General into one department.
The originals of Road Plans below 4500 are rolled paper plans mounted on linen. They are with State Records (Reference GRS 6867/1). There are also copies of the earlier Road Plans made by the LTO on linen and filed as ‘Road Tracings’ at the Netley Repository.
Road Plans above 4500 were drafted on linen and film and are filed in ‘Verti-Plan’ cabinets at the Netley facility. A set of mounted copies of these plans were used to note mergers etc. and then microfilmed for public use (available for viewing in the self-help area, ground floor, LTSA). Most of the mounted copies have been destroyed. Backup

microfilm aperture cards are filed with the Roads Unit. See Contact details.
The road plans finalised over the years 1849 to 1990 were indexed as RP1 to RP 9097. In 1988 the Common Plan Format was introduced with road plans lodged as Deposited Plans starting at DP 22349. The Roads (Opening and Closing) Act 1932 was repealed and replaced by the Roads (Opening and Closing) Act 1991. Plans lodged under the new act commenced with DP 34032.
Information on the disposition of closed roads can be found in Road Orders associated with each plan. The Roads Unit (see Contact details) keeps scanned images of Road Orders and a database covering later disposals of closed roads. Gazettal dates (i.e. the date of the Government Gazette notice often shown on the Public Maps and also shown on the plan as the confirmation date) are also recorded in this database. This information is also available from the Information Counter, LTSA.
Preliminary Road Plans (P Plans) are not available in SAILIS but can be inspected at Council Offices or requested at the Information Counter, LTSA. See Contact details.
PM Tracings
These are plans showing the location of Permanent Survey Marks.
PM Tracings 1861 onwards are available on SAILIS.
See Section 4 – Permanent Survey Mark (PSM) Records for more information.
Rack Plans
Rack Plans are used to graphically define larger areas and are often referred to in Government Gazette notices for definition purposes. The name is derived from the fact that they were filed vertically in a rack. Most are compiled and rarely contain survey data. Many of the historical Rack Plans from 1 to 548 have been previously archived or destroyed.
The following Rack Plans are available in SAILIS:
426/C, 426/H, 426/J to P, 554/C, 558, 559/1, 559/2, 559/B, 588/1 to 5, 561, 561/A, 561/C, 561/D, 573, 578, 590, 598/1A to 29B, 608, 612, 614/1A to 29A, 619/1 to 8, 623, 628/1 to 15B, 629/17 to 29, 633/1 to 4, 644/20, 644/31 to 38, 664, 669, 686 and 701. (Rack Plan 426/P is accessible as sheet 2 of 426/O)
The originals are filed with the plots.
The remaining Rack Plans (rolled) are with State Records (reference GRS 6908/1). The later ones are filed in 'Verti-Plan' cabinets on the ground floor, adjacent the call centre; others are in a 'Verti-Plan' cabinet at the Netley facility.
All enquiries should be directed to the Information Counter, LTSA, where staff have access to a book listing the contents of each plan. See Contact details.
Drawer Plans
These were Lands Department plans for various purposes that were filed in large drawers in the old ‘strongroom’ in the Treasury Building. Most of the other Drawer Plans do not contain any survey data, but are withdrawn Hundred Plans. All enquiries should be directed to the Information Counter, LTSA, where books listing the contents of each plan are stored. See Contact details.
The following Drawer Plans are available in SAILIS:
29/1A, 29/1B, 29/2A, 29/2B, 29/3A to 29/3C, 29/4A, 29/4B, 29/5 to 8, 29/9A, 29/9B, 29/10, 29/12A to 12C, 29/13 to 15, 29/17, 36/3, 36/49, 50/52, 72/1 to 66, 114/8, 115/1, 136/1 to 46, 137/1 to 174, 180/4, 180/4A, 180/8, 180/9, 180/10, 180/11, 180/15 to 18, 180/20, 180/22, 180/25, 186/ 1 to 12, 186A/1 to 7 and 388/A to X.

Some Drawer 17 plans are available in SAILIS for Hundreds Mingbool to Yatala, referenced as 17/1 to 17/76. The others were converted to PM tracings. (Drawer 17 was reserved for Diagram Book Pages that were never proceeded with.)
The following Drawer Plans that are referenced in the Survey Mark Search were looked for in March 2000, but not located: 29/16, 29/43, 115/10, 141/4, 141/8.
Microfilm copies of plans from the following Drawers are available on request from the Information Counter: 1 to 8, 10, 12 to 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, 27, 28, 30, 32, 36, 38, 53, 59, 64, 71, 78, 103, 104, 142, 145 and 150; the originals are archived by State Records (reference GRS 6910/1/P). The Drawer Plans have been scanned in colour and in time will be available as images.
Parliamentary Plans
These are mostly proposal plans prepared for Parliament with no useful land parcel data. Only Parliamentary Plan 313 is available in SAILIS.
The originals have been archived by State Records (reference GRS 6912/1/P). All enquiries should be directed to the Information Counter, LTSA, where an index book for these plans is kept. See Contact details.
SD Docket Plans
References to these plans are found through a Plan Details enquiry on the Survey Mark Search. Only references to SD1 are actual ‘Replacement of Permanent Marks’ plans with data, while the others are just notes that the Permanent Survey Mark has been located, see Dockets (Lands Department), Survey Division (SD) Dockets for more information.
Example Reference: SD1P35
The SD1 plans are available in SAILIS (i.e. select SD Docket Plans and enter 1P35 as the plan reference for the example above).
The remaining dockets are stored at the Old System Unit. A list is available through Survey Operations. See Contact details.
DR Docket Plans
References to these plans are commonly found through a Plan Details enquiry on the Survey Mark Search. Some refer to actual plans of ‘Replacement of Permanent Marks’, while the others contain notes about marks.
Example reference: DR1/69P43
Plans contained in the following list of dockets are available in SAILIS (i.e. select DR Docket Plans and enter 1/69P43 as the plan reference for the example above):

Also, see Lands Department Dockets for information about other DR dockets.
PSM Locality Plans
Also known as Survey Mark (SM) Locality plans, these are sketches showing the physical location of Permanent Survey Marks (PSMs) and are available in SAILIS free of charge; originals have been destroyed. The images are found using the mark number as the key e.g. PSM 6628/12345 is searched as 662812345.
See Section 4 – Permanent Survey Mark (PSM) Records for more information.
All enquiries should be directed to Survey Operations. See Contact details.
Survey Graphic Index
The Survey Graphic Index is a series of maps (mostly standard 1:2500 series) covering the built up areas of the state, annotated with numbers representing survey plans. The reverse side of the map (sheet 2 of plan image) contains plan references, or in some cases a Search, Document, Docket or Application, listed alongside the number. The data was originally derived from the survey examination search sheets and was maintained up to the lodging of Deposited Plan 65000 and Filed Plan 46000.
Images of these maps are available free of charge in SAILIS using the standard map reference (with upper case letter) e.g. 662710B.
Microfilm copies of the Survey Graphic Index are available in the self-help area, ground floor, LTSA. See Contact details.
Plots
These were an earlier form of Survey Graphic Index used for areas where the density of surveys was too much to use Section numbers as the index key. The Plots are no longer updated with new survey references, but Public Road declarations are still being electronically added. The Plots also contain lists of original title references and Application numbers (i.e. The Application to bring land under the Real Property Act).
Images of Plots are available in SAILIS free of charge. Microfilm copies are available in the self-help area, ground floor, LTSA. See Contact details. The original records are archived as ‘Diagram Plot Maps’ by State Records (Reference GRS 10921/1).
Diagram Book Pages
These are large bound books containing survey plans, indexed as pages within Hundreds and unique book names. These surveys cover the subdivision of the state into Hundreds and Sections under the Crown Lands Act. Since November 1987, crown land surveys have been lodged as Deposited and Filed plans. Scanned images of all of the Diagram Book Pages are in SAILIS except for some ‘shack site’ plans that contain aerial photographs.
Original Diagram Books can be ordered through State Records (See Contact details) using the code GRS 12200. In order to preserve the original records, some pages were removed from the books and replaced by copies. Where the original page is required it can be re-ordered through State Records quoting the code GRS 12203 for the original page removed from the book.
The mounted copies of the large pages, together with all of the original tracings, are stored at the Netley facility. The shack site aerial photograph Pages (e.g. Ridley Page 140A which relates to Ridley Page 140) are located in a ‘Verti-Plan’ cabinet located at Netley.
Survey Mark Search shows references to the pages using Diagram Book Codes, constructed mostly from historical (LOTS system) codes for each Hundred. See Diagram Book Codes for more information.
Survey Searching Guide
Version 4 June 2016 Page 8 of 45
The Section index in the front of each book has been entered into SAILIS as part of the search facility. The first index page, usually referring to reserves, Government Towns
etc., has been scanned as page 1I (upper case letter required) for each Hundred. The
indices to Mineral Sections (indexed as Page V1P1I) and Hundred Boundaries surveys
can also be viewed as multiple sheets of page 1I for these books.
The Section or ‘Public’ map for most Hundreds is available as page 1M (upper case letter required).
On rare occasions you may find a reference to ‘Originals Books’. These are a set of 7 books that appear to contain clean copies of Diagram Book pages; they are filed with the tracings at the Netley facility. See Originals Books for more information.
Crown Survey and Pastoral Field Books
Field Books (FB) & Pastoral field books referenced on Crown land surveys are being progressively scanned and some are available free of charge in SAILIS. Originals are filed in the storeroom, 1st Floor, LTSA and can be viewed on request at the Information Counter, LTSA. See Contact details.
See Section 3 Historic Lands Department Records – Field Books for more information.
Property Books
These historical LTO records consist of a set of Hundred and Township books, a Subdivisions Book and a RPA Applications book; images of the books are available in SAILIS.
The Hundred and Township books list the first title (and Application number where applicable) issued for Sections in Hundreds and Allotments in Government Towns. The Subdivisions Book provides references to plans of subdivision (e.g. Deposited and GRO Plans) and title references for all named subdivisions. The RPA Applications book lists titles issued from Applications to bring land under the Real Property Act. These records also contain cross-referencing to Plots.
Originals are stored in the Historical Records Filing Cabinet on the ground floor, LTSA. See Contact details.

Section 2 Historic LTO References
This Section details records associated with freehold land that were kept by the Lands Titles Office (LTO).
Prior to the use of Plan Lodgement Forms, all accepted plans were associated with a document of some kind. E.g.:
• transfer document
• re-subdivision docket
• application to bring land under the Real Property Act
Around 1940, those plans that were certified by a Licensed Surveyor were also allocated search references as part of the examination process. Until the early 1960’s, the plans were physically filed in the relevant document, but the majority have since been removed and indexed as LTO A, B or C plans.
The cross reference function in SAILIS links the plan reference with the search and document. In some cases but more particularly with applications and transfer documents, the survey plan may still be filed in the original document.
All survey plans lodged were noted in manual journals, on plots and in the Hundred & Town books.
Applications
Some Applications to bring land under the Real Property Act contain surveys.
An Application number can be checked for a survey plan reference using the cross reference function in SAILIS. Division Services have a list of all the application numbers that are known to contain surveys. See Contact details.
Note that Applications under Part 7A of the Real Property Act use a different numbering system.
All Applications to bring land under the Real Property Act are filed with the Old System Unit. See Contact details. If an application contains a survey that is not on SAILIS, it should be forwarded to Division Services for scanning and inclusion on SAILIS.
GRO Enrolled Plans
GRO Enrolled Plans are documents held by the Old System Unit. See Contact details. The plans are contained in Enrolment Books, with a book and page number.
All Old System records are name based, unlike Real Property records which are based on land descriptions.
There are two sets of books containing alphabetic listings of names:
An Enrolment book index (digital) that provides a brief description of the registered transaction, a date and a reference to either an Enrolment Book and Page or a GRO Deposit or Plan (these are distinguished from the Enrolment references by 4 digit years instead of 2 digit page numbers)
A Memorial Book Index that provides a reference to a GRO Memorial. The GRO Memorials are on microfilm cartridges and are referenced by book and page
This information is available for inspection at the Old System Unit. See Contact details.
Survey Searching Guide

Hundred and Town Books
These records were used as the source data for both the Survey Graphic Index and part of the SAILIS search database. The books contain a list of surveys for Sections in Hundreds and Allotments in Government Towns. Most of the survey references are search references.
The books are stored with Division Services and can be viewed at the Information Counter, LTSA. See Contact details.
LTO Dockets
All surveys in dockets up to 1940 have been removed and given file numbers. The originals for dockets after this (mainly outer boundary surveys for subdivisions) may still be filed in the docket, but there should be a search reference that can be viewed. Check the docket number in SAILIS, to see if a survey plan reference exists. If no record is found in SAILIS, the docket can be ordered in SAILIS or at the Information Counter, LTSA.
If the docket contains a survey plan, it should be forwarded to Division Services (See Contact details) so the plan can be added to SAILIS.
Property Books
See Section 1 Plan Images available in SAILIS for more information.
Provisional Plans
Provisional Plans were paper copies of new surveys, provided by surveyors prior to official lodgement, to notify searchers of a pending survey and marks placed in an area; they were deleted when the actual survey was lodged.
Provisional plans that have not been superseded by registered surveys have been indexed as Rack Plans.
These plans should not be confused with Preliminary Plans, lodged as part of the Road Plan approval process. Preliminary Plans are allocated a docket number e.g. PP32/356, whereas Provisional Plans were issued with sequential numbers e.g. PP1234.
RPA Search
These are the search packets associated with Limited Titles. The packets can be inspected at the Old System Unit. See Contact details.
Searches
These are work sheets (prints of surveys) used by the survey examiners in Division Services to check the plan. They contain cross-references to earlier surveys as well as data comparisons.
There are 6 series:
• Ordinary Searches (OS) (early outer boundary plans)
• X Searches
• L searches (similar to information purposes plans)
• C Searches (Commonwealth surveys)
• Deposited Plan (DP) searches (DP 12001 to DP 30931)
• Filed Plan (FP) searches (FP 18174 to FP 30751)
Survey Searching Guide
Version 4 June 2016 Page 11 of 45
DPs and FPs later than the numbers shown above, where boundary definition problems have been identified have a small cross or star in the Plan Approved box, indicating that the work sheet had been kept; most of these work sheets have now been destroyed.
Microfilm aperture cards of the searches (except for the later DPs and FPs) are available in the self-help area, LTSA and a backup set is kept in the storeroom, 1st Floor, LTSA; the original Searches have mostly been destroyed.
Search Books
These books contain diagrams of data compiled on request, usually in areas where survey issues have been discovered. They are kept in the storeroom, 1st Floor, LTSA, and can be viewed on request at the Information Counter, LTSA. See Contact details.
See Section 3 – Historic Lands Department Records for other search book references.
Town Planning Books
These books were used to store diagrams of re-subdivisions prior to the Docket system. References to individual diagrams contain a book number and page number e.g. TP Book 35, Page 19.
These books have been archived with State Records. See Contact details.
Registered Documents
Transfers are the documents most likely to contain surveys. You should first check the number using the Cross-Reference option on SAILIS, to see if a survey plan reference exists. The Division Services section has a list of document numbers that are known to contain surveys. See Contact details.
The Transfer numbers can usually be found by a historic search of titles. The only way to be sure if a transfer contains a survey is to view it. In some cases it becomes evident where data has changed on the title that issued from the transfer, when compared to the original title.
Documents can be ordered in SAILIS or at the Information Counter, LTSA. See Contact details. If the document contains a survey, it should be forwarded to Division Services, so that the plan can be added to SAILIS.
Documents 1 to 362,091 have been archived by State Records (GRS 12537/1/P); other documents are filed at the Netley facility.

Section 3 Historic Lands Department Records
This section details records associated with Crown land and originally kept by the Lands Department; most have been sent to State Records for archiving.
Many of these references are found in notes on Diagram Book Pages.

Council Plans (also known as Local Government Plans)
This series of withdrawn Council plans date from 1932 approximately, until 1992, when the Land Tenure Maps replaced them. The plans depict the legal boundaries (shown with the extent of the defined boundaries and government gazette dates) of the individual Councils areas.
All available plans have been photographed and retained on aperture cards held by the Roads Unit. Enquiries should be directed to the Roads Unit or Information Counter, LTSA. See Contact details.
The original maps were filed in the Treasury Strong room Drawer reference No. 44 for Municipal Councils and Drawer No. 139 for District Councils. Once later versions or transparency with overlays replaced the plans, the original plans were withdrawn, photographed and indexed in Drawer 222. These plans have been sent to archives (State Records reference GRS 6911/1).
The aperture cards are numbered in a 2200 series.
County Plans
These plans are mainly of historical interest and date back to when Colonel Light was instructed to survey the surrounding districts using natural features to produce boundaries for Township and County purposes for settlement. The first Counties were gazetted on 2/6/1842. The County of Adelaide was divided into Hundreds for settlement and gazetted 29/10/1846 pursuant to the provisions of Act 11 of 1846. These plans have been sent to State Records (reference GRS 6910/1). Some of these plans that covered areas outside of Hundreds were filed in Drawers. They were the only record of tenure for these areas and were current up to 1978. A list of these plans is shown below. Surveys of sections listed against Counties may be found in the Out of Hundreds G&C diagram book (i.e. look up the index for this book).

Education Perpetual leases and Educational lands
The Education Act 1875 created a body called “The Council of Education”, the purpose of which was to establish the system of public schooling. In the same Act the following Section 24 was also enacted to provide for a method of raising funds for education purposes:
“24. The Governor may reserve, dedicate, and grant to the Council any waste lands of the Crown as sites for school buildings, and may also grant to the Council by way of endowment for education one hundred thousand acres of the said waste lands, and may also from time to time grant by way of such endowment such further portions of the said waste lands not exceeding in area in any one year twenty thousand acres. The Council may demise and let any of the lands so granted by way of endowment, either from year to year or for any term not exceeding twenty-one years at the best rental which can be obtained for the same, and upon such terms and conditions as to the Council shall seem fit; and the annual income derived there from shall be paid into the Treasury, and applied by the Treasurer in manner directed by the Council towards the erection of school-houses, payment of salaries, and other expenditure in carrying out the provisions of this Act.”
The Governor under the authority of this section granted large areas of land in the hundreds of Andrews, Appila, Ayers, Benara, Binnum, Black Rock Plain, Bundaleer, Crystal Brook, Mannanarie, Narridy, Penola, Pirie, Reynolds, Robertson, Tatiara, Wandearah, Willochra, Wirrega and Yackamoorundie (gazette notice 9 December 1875) and in the hundreds of Anne, Barunga, Belvidere, Boucaut, Bremer, Caroline, Everard, Goyder, Hanson, Jessie Light, Yackamoorundie, Tarcowie, Terowie and Tungkillo (gazette 16 March 1876) to the Council which then divided the areas and entered into lease arrangements with landholders for farming on a broadacre basis. These leases were registered as RPA instruments on the respective Land Grant held by the Council.
In 1878 Royal Assent was given to “The Education Amendment Act, 1878” The Council of Education was dissolved “and all duties or obligations which by “The Education Act, 1875,” or the “Education Act Amendment Act, 1877,” are imposed upon the Council, and all powers, rights, privileges, and authorities which by the said Acts are conferred upon, or may be exercised by, the Council, shall hereafter be performed, had, and exercised by such Member of the Executive Council as for the time being shall have control over the Education Department, and such Member of the Executive Council, and his successors, shall be for the purposes of the said Acts, and of this Act, a body politic and corporate under the name or title of the “Minister controlling Education.”….” (Section 1)
Survey Searching Guide
Version 4 June 2016 Page 20 of 45
The creation of the Ministry did not affect the administration of the endowed lands as Section 8 of the Act informs:
“8. Notwithstanding anything contained in the 24th section of the Education Act, 1875, the annual income derivable from the lands granted for endowment under the provisions of such section shall be applied by the Treasurer towards the erection of schoolhouses, payment of salaries, and other expenditure in carrying out the provisions of the said Act, but so that no such moneys shall be expended without the sanction of Parliament.”
In 1881 The Educational Lands Act was passed “to consolidate and amend the Laws relating to the Dedication and Leasing of Lands granted for Educational Purposes”. The abovementioned Section 8 of the 1875 Act was repealed and the Commissioner of Crown Lands was given an additional title as “The Commissioner of Educational Lands”. Section 4 of the Act vested the endowed lands viz:
“4. Notwithstanding anything contained in section 1 of “The Education Act Amendment Act, 1878.” All lands heretofore granted by way of endowment for education, under the authority of section 24 of “The Education Act, 1875,” shall, immediately upon the passing of this Act, become, and shall thereafter remain, vested in the Commissioner of Educational Lands (hereinafter called “the Commissioner”), subject, nevertheless, to all leases, licences, contracts, and agreements heretofore lawfully granted or entered into in respect of such lands.”
Section 39 of The Crown Lands Amendment Act, 1893 stated: “39. Section 24 of “The Education Act, 1875,” is hereby repealed and all lands heretofore granted to the Minister Controlling Education pursuant to the said section, or granted, reserved, or dedicated by way of endowment for education, shall revert to Her Majesty, subject to any existing leases, and such lands shall henceforth be let on perpetual lease, and dealt with under the provisions of this Act: Provided that nothing in this section shall alter the purpose for which any land shall have been reserved, dedicated, or granted pursuant to the said section, or affect the, application of the income thereof.”
The future of the educational lands was dealt with under sections 82 and 83 of the Crown Lands Act of 1903. Section 82 repeated, with one amendment, the wording of Section 39 of the 1893 Act.
“82. Section 24 of “The Education Act, 1875,” is hereby repealed, as from the twenty-third day of December, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-three, and all lands heretofore granted to the Minister Controlling Education pursuant to the said section, or granted, reserved, or dedicated by way of endowment for education, shall revert to Her Majesty, subject to any existing leases, and such lands shall henceforth be let on perpetual lease, and dealt with under the provisions of this Act: Provided that nothing in this section shall alter the purpose for which any land shall have been reserved, dedicated, or granted pursuant to the said section, or affect the, application of the income thereof.”
“83. All leases of lands vested in the Commissioner of Educational Lands, from and after the eighth day of December, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight, shall be perpetual leases or agreements. All such lands which have not heretofore been dealt with shall hereafter be dealt with by the Board under Part V of this Act.”
Section 82 of the 1903 Act was repealed by section 5 of The Crown Lands Further Amendment Act 1906 the effect of which was to treat all Education Perpetual leases the same as leases allotted under the provisions of the Crown Lands Act despite the fact that the majority of them are actually leases of freehold lands and registered as such.

Pastoral Plan Books
The Pastoral Lease records consist of a number of books indexed to a card system kept in the self-help area, ground floor, LTSA. The card system contains alphabetic listings of names linked to another index of Pastoral Lease numbers. The Pastoral Lease number index contains references to the books. All enquiries should be directed to the Information Counter, LTSA. See Contact details.
Microfilm aperture cards are available for viewing the following records:
• 1851 Pastoral Lease Diagrams Vol. 1 to 6.
• 1888 Pastoral Lease Field Diagrams pages 1 to 599
• Pastoral Surveys Books 1 to 5
• 1888 Lease Boundary Improvements pages 1 to 77
• 1888 Lease Boundary Improvements with Valuations to page 96
• Pastoral Lease Office Plans to page 64
• Start Runs, Fixings Vol. 2
These books contain diagrams of Pastoral Lease boundaries. They are linked to Pastoral Field Books which contain the actual surveys. Many of these are compass traverses with limited accuracy.
The following books are with the Land Tenure & Statutory Support Unit. See Contact details:
No. Books Label
13 1888 Pastoral Lease Field Diagrams
2 Pastoral Lease Office Plans
6 1851 Pastoral Lease Diagrams
2 1888 Lease Boundary Improvements with Valuations
1 Pastoral Field Traverses
1 Start Points of runs & fixings
5 Pastoral Survey Diagram Book
1 A.T. Woods Surveys
10 Data for surveys of runs (books 1, 2, 2A, 3 to 9)
2 1888 Lease Boundary Improvements
6 Amounts Paid Books (maps of Pastoral Leases with annotations)
High quality colour digital images are held by the Land Tenure & Statutory Support Unit. See Contact details.
The Pastoral field books are filed with the other Crown survey field books in the storeroom, 1st floor, LTSA.
Plots
These are a similar record to Issue books (not to be confused with LTO Plots) that are occasionally referred to on Diagram Book Pages. They were prepared from adjoining survey information to show boundary data and areas for sections and reserves. E.g. Plot 309 shows data for an Institute Reserve adjacent Sections 89 and 90 in the Hundred of Noarlunga.
The plots are now archived in State Records (Reference GRS 6907/1).

Private Town Books
These books contain diagrams of some non-government towns. This information is mostly duplicated on General Registry Office (GRO) Plans.
There are 4 Private Towns Books filed with State Records. See Contact details.
Public Maps
These are coloured maps that were the authority for tenure and Crown Land parcel identifiers until they were deregulated in 1988. In some cases they provide the only evidence of Government (Public) Roads. A set of clear (no colour) copies is available in SAILIS by selecting the Hundred name in the list of Diagram Books and typing in ‘MAP’ instead of a page number.
Withdrawn Public Maps (labelled Superseded Land Tenure Maps) are available on microfilm aperture cards in the self-help area, ground floor, LTSA and are filed in Public Map number order. A record of all of the public maps (HISTMAP), including the microfilm numbers, is held at the Information Counter, ground floor, LTSA.
High quality colour digital images are held by the Land Tenure & Statutory Support Unit. See Contact details. Also, see Public Map Codes.
Railway Plans
References to Railway Plans or Tracings are occasionally found on Diagram Book Pages (e.g. RLY PLAN 54/7 on DBP. 63, Strathalbyn). These originally referred to Drawer Plans that were kept by the Surveyor-General but were later handed over to the South Australian Railways. All enquiries for drawing copies or rail research material can be directed to islingtonplans@bigpond.com or phone (08) 8352 3339. They can locate plans from the Drawer Plan references or the name of a railway siding or station.
Some railway plans covering the Eyre Peninsula may be kept by Transfield Maintenance at Port Lincoln, phone (08) 8683 2304.
Some information is available for the Broken Hill to Peterborough railway on microfilm cards. These cards are labelled ‘Petersburg & N.S.Wales – Contract Plan’, and are filed with the Road Plan microfilm cards in the Roads Unit. See Contact details.
Where the railway crosses freehold land, there is usually no point in looking for them, since the boundary data is recorded in transfers and Certificates of Title.
Search Books
Search Books are a set of old Lands Department books containing prints of Highways Department road acquisition data. There is no survey information (e.g. marks, occupation etc) and in most cases the information is duplicated in transfer documents lodged in the LTSA. These books are filed with the Old System Unit. See Contact details. See Section 2 for other search book references.

Section 4 Permanent Survey Mark (PSM) Records
Enquiries beyond the following should be directed to Survey Operations. See Contact details.
Survey Mark Locality Plans
These are sketches showing the physical location of Permanent Survey Marks (PSMs) and are available in SAILIS free of charge. The images are found using the mark number e.g. 6628/12345 is entered as 662812345. Other information about these marks can be found via the Survey Mark Search.
The originals are filed with Survey Operations. See Contact details.
PM Tracings
These are plans showing the location of Permanent Survey Marks. PM Tracings from 1861 onwards should be available in SAILIS and are a mixture of Crown Land surveys filed for information purposes, surveys not proceeded with, Commonwealth surveys for information purposes and PSM relocations.
References to these plans can be found via the Survey Mark Search where the plan type is prefixed with ‘A’ (e.g. PSM Tracing 1234 is A1234).
The originals are filed at the Netley facility. The large ones are in a Verti-Plan cabinet and the small ones are filed with the small Diagram Book tracings. A backup set of Microfilm aperture cards are kept in the self-help area, ground floor, LTSA.
From the 1930s to the 1960s surveys lodged in the Lands Titles Office (LTO) that placed PMs were also given Lands Department PM Tracing A, B & C numbers (different to LTO A, B & C numbers) or Drawer plan numbers. The Lands Department A, B & C numbers refer to the A, B or C book containing cross references to docket numbers or LTO plans.
e.g. DBP 105 Willunga has a note ‘Vide PM Tr. B 1219’. This refers to Book B, tracing 1219 which is cross referenced to docket 4278/60, which when cross referenced in SAILIS gives LTO C 1108.
Survey Operations (see Contact details) has the PM Tracing books that cross reference PM Tracing numbers and docket numbers, which are used to obtain an LTO plan reference.
Traverse Diagrams
These diagrams show the traverse lines, Traverse Pages and mark numbers used in network surveys. Microfilm aperture cards are available in the self-help area, ground floor, LTSA.
Traverse Pages
These contain a record of the field observations carried out during network surveys. Microfilm aperture cards are available in the self-help area, ground floor, LTSA.
The originals are filed with Survey Operations. See Contact details.

Section 5 Map Codes
Diagram Book Codes
Survey Mark Search uses Diagram Book Codes based on an historical code (LOTS system code) for the Hundred name. For example, H105600P3 is the code for page 3 in the Onkaparinga book, where 105600 is the code for the Hundred of Onkaparinga.
See Public Map codes for a complete listing of Hundred names, codes and Public Map numbers.
In all but three exceptions, the page number follows the code. The three exceptions are Out of Hundreds South (OHS), the Roads Book (RB) and the Mineral Claims Book (MIN) where the code is followed by ‘V’, the volume number, ‘P’ and the page number e.g. OHSV1P20.
Out of Hundreds North pages are referenced as ‘OHNP’ followed by the page number in Hundred/Parcel, Plan Image Search within SAILIS. In the Survey Mark Search they are referenced using the Hundred code for the pastoral or 250,000 scale maps e.g. H833800P861 for page 861 located in Out Of Hundreds (Andamooka).
The following table shows the codes for Diagram Books that are not labelled with a Hundred name:

Public Map Codes
These codes are used in Survey Plan Details to identify parcels where the land description includes a Hundred name. Allotments in Government Towns are identified using similar codes with the last two numbers changed, e.g. the code for Alawoona (in the Hundred of Allen) is 710101.

Section 6 Miscellaneous Records
The following miscellaneous records have been kept for historical searching. The books listed below are stored in the LTSA historical records filing cabinet on the ground floor:
Railway, Drainage and Index to Parliamentary Plans
Topographic Sketches Index
Data for Survey of Mineral Claims, Forest Reserve Plans and Village Settlement Districts were previously kept, but could not be found in 2015.
City of Adelaide – Register of Public Streets
This book (KNet #9843270) contains a register of Public Streets within the Adelaide City Council in alphabetical order. It tables such information as width from Building Line to Building Line distances, widths of roadway, water-table, footpath and other comments.
Government Gazette of September 26, 1850 page 555 (KNet #9843344) also contains widths of carriage and foot-ways for some streets in the City of Adelaide.
Contact Survey Operations for details. See Contact details.
Cummins Kensington & Norwood Alignment
A copy of the Cummins Kensington and Norwood alignment field notes is available in SAILIS by searching Miscellaneous Survey Records as the plan image type and entering ‘NORWOODALI’ for the first 99 sheets or ‘NORWOODALI-2’ for the remaining sheets in the plan order field.
