Audience Research

As of now I have analysed a selection of music videos in great detail, this has allowed me to further my knowledge and create a further analysis of the similarities between my chosen music videos of the genre I have selected, all of which are displayed on my blog. In addition, as part of my primary research I constructed a survey and posted it amongst various places where my target audience can easily access it, thus carry it out, allowing me to gain a further insight of the likes of my target audience. Now, I am going to display the results from the survey I produced to display the data I gained and create a typical audience profile based upon this.

Question 1 of 10

‘What is your gender?’This chart displays the data of which states a large segment of my audience (70%) are in fact females, in comparison to the minor segment of 30% of males that contribute to my target audience. This distinction allows me to make the assumption that mainly, the R’N’B genre is catered towards the female audience. However, this may not be necessarily so in general terms, yet this is significant because it has being previously portrayed that within the songs I have analysed from the R’N’B genre itself, there is a clear dominance of females within the music videos of the likes of Beyoncé, Tulisa and Rihanna. Yet, as previously drawn upon, it would be ludicrous to conclude entirely in such ways as these artists are all females themselves, thus are evidently aiming to portray some kind of unity through there songs regarding women; as I discovered in several music videos that I have analysed. Therefore, these findings are not reliable in the terms of general R’N’B genre, yet just in terms of my advance portfolio project and the artists, listed above, that I have studied. It will be discovered later that a massive 90% of the individuals who of which took part in my survey, claimed to favour the R’N’B genre over a variety of others. Yet, as noticed, the vast majority of this are female. Thus, these findings cannot be generalised to the entire population.

Question 2 of 10

‘Which category below includes your age?’

80% of the participants of my survey were demonstrated to be 17 years old or younger. 20% of the participants were 18-20 years old, thus 100% of all participants were between the ages of 0-20. This is highly significant as the music genre of R’N’B targets, primarily, this age sector above all. This amplifies my findings as an alternative question within my survey proves that the majority favour the R’N’B genre, this is expected from the target audience of my survey, as previously mentioned, they are deemed to be within that specific age range. This target audience is very typical, as their role models tend to be them of which associate themselves within the R’N’B genre, such as Rihanna and Beyoncé. These results are those of which I expected to find when carrying out this piece of research in regards to my survey. However, this may not be entirely reliable as it does not take into account the whole population, as it is not a representative sample, as the number of participants was high enough to draw such conclusions and apply them to each member of society. These findings just comply with the loosely based stereotypes within the media, which we have to work upon to create a profile of our appropriate target audience. This profile needs to be fairly accurate to achieve our success of creating an appropriate product for our advanced portfolio.

Question 3 of 10

‘Which of the following best describes your current occupation?’

My results from this question of the survey demonstrate that everyone of my participants that carried out my survey were students, this allows me to close the age bracket from the looser closed questions previously demonstrated from 0-20 to the ages of 16-18, as this ‘student’ status allows us to disregard the majority of the external figures, this allows me to make the assumption that the tight bracket for the main target audience falls between these ages of 16-18 year olds. This is particularly significant as I fall into this bracket myself, thus these particular results may lack reliability as fellow students of my age were the main participants for this survey, thus we cannot apply these findings to the external generation population outside of the few studied that took part. As these conclusions drawn from my entire survey, again, may not apply. The reliability of my survey would increase if I was to replicate it again and got similar results, yet this would only, again, apply to those studied, to give it a generability I would have to take into consideration a larger sample size.

Question 4 of 10

‘What genre of music do you prefer?’

As previously touched upon, the majority of the participants within my survey take a particular liking to the R’N’B genre. This is useful as a part of my primary research as the age range that took part within my survey are actually my target audience for my advanced portfolio music video, thus it significant to note that the R’N’B genre I am emulating an artist from is in fact hugely catered for that particular audience. I chose this genre as it is one me and my fellow team mates are a huge part of and can relate to greatly, this will help us hugely when taking into consideration various aspects during post-production, production and the evaluation of our advanced portfolio. This piece of research back ups our suspected results thus, we have achieved the comfort that we are heading the right way with the correct target audience we have discovered within our primary research.

Question 5 of 10

‘How often do you attend live musical performances?’

As displayed on the previous slide, the majority of my target audience that took part in this survey as a part of my primary research attend live musical performances moderately often. This gives me a clear indication for a build up of an audience profile. I have consequently discovered that my target audience of predominantly females moderately often attend live musical performances of their favourable artists, from mainly the R’N’B genre, with a minor cross over of Pop music, they are all students and are currently in a some form of education, this allows me to make the assumption that they are then in fact quite fairly sociable characters that interact through college institutions and external events i.e. live musical performances.

Question 6 of 10

‘Do you watch music videos?’

Significantly, a massive 100% of the participants within my survey of my selected target audience watch music videos. This is hugely motivation, as obviously as a part of my advanced portfolio I am to demonstrate a construct of my own personal music video, thus it is incredibly satisfied to explore that the entire 100% of my target audience in fact do watch music videos, thus take a great interest towards it, yet also regard it with great importance. This allows me to be inspired by the existing music videos that my current target audience so blatantly indulge in and thus motivates me to emulate these and their key ideas and themes. I found numerous themes to be so common when investigating the similarities I analysed within my three key focus music videos myself and these have deemed to be very successful and conventional, thus popular when taking into consideration my target audience.

Question 7 of 10

‘How often do you stream music online?’

The majority of the participants that took part in my survey as a part of my primary research stated that they streamed music online moderately often. This allows me to conclude that actually watching the music video visually at the same time as soaking up the lyrics and musical sector of a track was deemed more popular when regarding my particular target audience. This allows me to make my music video particularly visually orientated as that is how my target audience prefer to be catered for, as the much rather watch a music video visually opposed to just listening to the track itself auditory. This puts great emphasis on the music video itself as to being an entertaining aspect of escapism as well as the musical and lyrical side of which they additionally indulge themselves in.

Question 8 of 10

‘How often do you download music from file-sharing websites?’

My research demonstrates that my target audience download music from file-sharing websites moderately often. This doesn’t fall under any extreme of ‘extremely often’ or contrastingly ‘not at all’. Thus, this is a very vague concept therefore we can only particularly relate this back again to my results from question 7. These so clearly demonstrate that my target audience enjoy soaking up the music from their favourable artists of the R’N’B genre visually by the means of actual music videos. Rather than both streaming and downloads from file-sharing websites.

Question 9 of 10

‘How often do you purchase music in a physical format (CDs, records, cassettes etc.)?’

The majority of my target audience actually deem to extremely often purchase music in a physical format. This, again, fulfils my expectations as, alongside my music video, I am also aiming to construct a CD/Digipak for my target audience. these results support my instinct that these types of distribution cater for the audience I am aiming to target within my advanced portfolio process, thus these products I shall be constructing will appeal to them as a use of product type, as the findings from this survey so enthusiastically suggests.

Question 10 of 10

‘How important is an album cover when considering buying an CD album?’

The majority of my target audience consider it to be quite import to explore the album cover when buying a CD album. Personally, my beliefs are that you need a great product attraction to appeal for your target audience to purchase. Yet, in the case of well-known and recognised artists such as Beyoncé, simplicity and an image to associate with her, i.e. a close up of her face, basically appeals to the target audience she is aiming for anyway. Yet, in the case of niche or independent bands that are upcoming or in aid to promote themselves, these may need more attention to marketization to create a brand for themselves of which they can then build upon and create a fan base for, once this is completed they can then build up an image to which their audience can then recognise the band from, i.e. particular styles and themes of imagery.
