Dear Readers,

Thanks a lot to all the photographers and sty-lists who submitted their editorials! You never know what you get, especially when you ask for submissions under a theme that leaves a lot of room for interpretation. We were even more en-thusiastic to see how many great works we re-ceived. Some of them are like a fireworks of colors. Others tell their story by mixing pho-tography and art. From more than 200 submissi-ons we selected which offer you a variety of fashion photography by great talents.

One of the editorials we used across our media-channels. You find one part of the editorial in this digital SUPERIOR ONLINE April issue and the other part in our brand new print issue SU-PERIOR EDITION #2. And both are connected to the making-of video on our Website.

# Editorial

Finally, again we show you a Fashion Week Special. This time one of our freelance journalists, Saskia Ibrom, visited Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo. You find four of her highlights in this issue.

Enjoy our Online Issue and don't miss the special discount we offer you for our new Print Edition ...

Best, Tom & Marc

After creating initially a series of rings for the L’Histoire de Mimi Cri collection, Isabella Pikart, designer of vaporetta berlin, enlarged the collec-tion with further models - earrings and a modu-lar pendant system.

Like a golden thread runs through all new jew-ellery pieces as well need for experimentation with form, surface feel, glaze, chromaticity and contrasts to reach new combinations and inter-pretations of materials gold and porcelain. The squares, which already are the basic geometric form of the rings, in the first part of the collec-tion, now find themselves in new arrangements such as floral forms "Fleur", or the square or cube in a variable play of lines, surfaces or cubes alone or relative on to the other.

The name “L’Histoire de Mimi Cri” refers to the term “mimicry” which is used in biology if on species uses the similarity to another order to mimic it and to protect them itself. At the same time it's also a game of words with the French expression “Le dernier Cri” for “a must have” in fashion.

SAMMLER BERLIN is a German fashion design label whose founder and cre-ative mind is Rebecca Sammler. The fashion label‘s signature is a new ready-to-wear haute couture for the charismatic, self-aware woman true to an indi-vidual style and unpretentious glamour.

The collection combines the highest couture crafts with new textile tech-nologies and utilizes only the best and finest materials. Specially designed patterns, prints and embroideries, including aluminium silk, plissee and lace create an interesting and exclusive juxtaposition of material and structure. All the pieces are exclusive and therefore limited, hand-made in Berlin with extraordinary attention to detail, and are custom-fitted for the individual client.

Trademark pieces in fur and leather are a special feature of SAMMLER BER-LIN but innovative and new processing methods, away from the old and dusty fur coat of the past, formulate a new and light chic.

Anything is possible with the designer‘s respectful and responsible approach to the animal; she only uses fur and skin, such as lamb, goat and rabbit, that are side products of the food industry.

Sustainability is also an important aspect of Rebecca Sammler‘s work; her clothes are made to last and her designs to endure the fast and furious ephemera of today‘s fashion industry. Her creations combine both, the con-crete moment of time, as well as the quality and values of tradition and excel-lence in craftmanship.

SAMMLER BERLIN is closing the circle between design and its realization with its new showroom which presents unique pieces in an exclusive atmos-phere and one-of-a-kind architecture.

Glasses by ic! berlin are high-end fashion products which are manufac-tured in Berlin - bit by bit intricately crafted by hand. Holding ic! berlin

glasses you understand why this attention to detail is justified. ic! berlin captivates through its surface, form stability and flexibility.

The screwless sheet-metal-glasses combine ideas and perfectionism: the glasses are elementary and naked. In the same way they are as much off

the wall as they are suitable for everyday use. Precisely manufactured and virtually unbreakable, they are flexible and also light as a feather. No

screws, brazing or welding ic! berlin glasses are highly durable.

KEX-ACCESSORIES are textile-jewels. I put a great emphasis on their independence and autonomy from fashion trends while attracting self-confident and modern women. Every single scarf, collier and belt is produced in a limited edition of no more than 98 items. No mass product, no clearance sales – KEX will keep its exclusiveness and timeless value.

FACETS of non-clichéd beauty, independence, intellectual flexibil-ity and experimental creativity are my main tenets.

MY GOAL - beyond designing embroidery-lace and creating exclu-sive textile-jewels, is to cooperate with creative people across genres and borders, bringing together fashion, painting, music, modern dance, film and literature.

G.v.G.v.

-55-

April 2013

For the coming season, G.V.G.V. is all about the Fifties’ sex-appeal: red lips meet glasses. With clear reference to famous pin-up’s like Bet-ty Page, the Japanese brand incorporates leop-ard and houndstooth patterns and pencil skirts in their designs. Maiden outfits and overknee boots combined with masks show a resem-blance to fetish fantasies – you could call it edgy, you could call it tacky.

The designer behind G.V.G.V. calls herself “Mug”, was born in 1971 and founded her own label in 1999. In Japan, G.V.G.V. is already a quite well-known brand which led to many standing spec-tators during the show. One of the biggest publicity stunts were collaborations between G.V.G.V. and UNIQLO, Japan’s biggest clothing retailer and equivalent to Swedish all-rounder H&M.

So G.V.G.V. clearly is not too shy for mass appeal. The Autumn-Winter show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO features a lot of currently hyped leather pieces and some black and white block stripes. And why not? It is a fun collection which consequently follows its theme but does not make the mistake of being too predictable – despite being a Fifties’ show, you would not find a single polka-dot in this collection.

Hiroyuki Horihata and Makiko Sekiguchi are the master-minds behind Japanese label “matohu”. They met while studying “Men’s design” at famous Bunka Fashion college. Located in fashion-infested Tokyo-Shinjuku, the school emerged from a girl’s school for clothing design founded in 1919 and began publishing “So-En”, the first Japanese fashion magazine in 1936. Internationally acclaimed alum-ni include Kenzo Takada and Yohji Yamamoto; and it was Yohji Yamamoto and infamous COMME des GARÇONS Hori-hata and Sekiguchi worked for after finishing their degrees.

While the duo’s designs for their 2005 founded label are in no way comparable to Rei Kawakubo’s startling decon-structionism or Yamamoto’s artistic drapings, matohu’s straight lines and the very Japanese idea of mantling the body rather than emphasising its features attest to Hor-ihata’s and Sekiguchi’s background. Also the exception-ally choreographed show tells about the designer’s faible for clear concepts and geometric shapes: Rather than just walking up and down the catwalk, three models at a time remain standing on different spots gazing right into the audience.

But the collection itself is quite wearable and not very strik-ing. The colour palette consisting of natural hues in the beginning gives the whole presentation a very sping-like feeling until the end of the show, when strong blue colors make their way onto the runway and add a more dramat-ic touch. All in all, this is very nice to look at but in the end, the collection cannot keep up with the extraordinary way of presentation.

For Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO A/W 2013, Hiroshima born Yasutoshi Ezumi presents his forth collection “Anima”.

Clear cuts and straight lines are a trademark of the designer who stuck to mostly natural colors and black and white. A strategy which makes the few red piec-es pop out even more. In an interview with Superi-or Magazine, Ezumi refers to the contrast between “masculinity and femininity” as a major inspiration. Though he does perceive these as two different parts, Ezumi tried to create something new by “mixing dif-ferent factors”. These notions refer to Swiss psychi-atrist Carl Gustav Jung’s idea of “anima” as the femi-nine side inside a male’s mind.

Ezumi acutalizes his concept of femininity and mas-culinity by deconstructing the typical male suit and transforming it into a more casual shape. Moreover, chunky knits and flowing cardigans create a comfort-ing contrast to a supposedly stiff “male” shape.

Traditional Japanese flower motifs appliquéd to dress-es and vests do not only refer to an inherent feminin-ity but also link to Japanese arts and crafts. Ezumi’s work notably floats between Eastern and Western fashion – trench coats and kimono-like cuts are dis-played on equal terms. For the designer, especially British fashion had been of substantial importance for his work: “Especially Alexander McQueen has had influenced me a great deal”, he says. This affection did not just happen to be that way; after his degree in Fashion/Textile at prestigious Central Saint Martins College, Ezumi worked as a n assistant at Alexander McQueen and subsequently as a designer at Aquas-cutum London. These experiences apparently helped him a great deal to incorporate Western influences and his Eastern identity in timeless and simple piec-es for a global audience.

For designer Kamishima Chinami, autumn and winter will be colourful: red, orange, green, yel-low and some Yves-Klein-blue – the petite Jap-anese who likably wears the same shoes she has designed for her models at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO is not afraid of making a bold statement.

All of Kamishima Chinami’s color dying is done in Japan and most of it by hand, for this occasion the designer even keeps a color-dying work-shop at her studio. Inspirations for her colour-ful designs were mostly found travelling abroad after she completed her studies at Esmod Tokyo. Subsequently, Kamishima Chinami founded her own label in 1998.

-60-

Besides the downright colourfulness, feminine cuts and shapes are characteristic for Kamishi-ma Chinami’s Autumn-Winter collection. Skirts and dresses dominate the show while gloves, scarves, shawls and fur collars complete the winter look. For a dramatic touch, Kamishima Chinami predicts the ever-present bordeaux lip-stick to be around again this winter.

Kamishima Chinami’s designs may not be the result of a complex philosophy or sophisticat-ed drapings. But still, the Japanese’s feminine and almost spring-like designs are a nice and refreshing change from the omnipresent grey in black most designers seem to settle for in autumn and winter.
